Yep. Its back, and may I say, looking rather nice. It is far from confirmed whether or not this version of the 1-series is coming to America, but my guess is that a standard coupe would be far-more successful than a three-door hatch.

A coupe variant of the BMW 1-Series has been spied in testing. The 1-Series launched as a three-door vehicle recently, but the new series is already set to expand with a coupe model. The 1-Series coupe is expected to launch by the end of this year to be followed by a soft-top convertible and possibly a M version in 2008.

Sweet. I'll take mine in polar white, with the gray cloth seats, a turbocharged inline four, and a six-speed manual please. Whats that? Do I want Satellite Radio and a CD Changer? No, thats not necessary...

I think I'd classify it as "allright" in most circumstances, as it should become a popular alternative in the growing small-luxury market... Of course, assuming that BMW prices it correctly. I guess that means that Pontiac's plan of making the G5 RWD is begining to sound like a good idea...

If they could find a way to make it lose 500 pounds, they'd be right back where the 3-series was 20 years ago.

I do hope they find a way to make the rear half of the greenhouse less awkward.

It will be a good replacement for 318ti
Aren't they look very similar? (except the front)

It's too taped up to tell much about it. Those rear windows are larger than they look, and the bumpers may be plastic or fiber mock-ups of later production versions. What I can see of the sheetmetal is okay, though.

I suppose it will lose about 300 pounds or so, merely from the loss of the rear end, I'd have chucked the rear seats, too, for another 100 pounds, but heck, you can't have everything.

I'll take mine with a 2.0 turbodiesel, please, manual tranny and nothing else.

they should kick up the trunk a little more, like the 318ti...it looks kinda cartoonish the way it is.

It's beginning to look ugly...

I really want to like this, please don't mess up the proportions again.

Sorry BMW, but that rendering looks even more homosexual-oriented than my Del Sol. If they're going to make a car that small, they'd better plan carefully, because rarely does a car that small bode well without a hatchback variant.

It does look a bit akward. The greenhouse isn't perfect. The front end does not look very coupe-like. It'll probably be pretty quick, and not cost too much, but we'll see.

BMW has tried selling crappy ~$20k cars here before. They were laughed out of the market. Reserving judgements about the styling, hopefully it doesn't come here, and thank God Mercedes never went cheap on us.

What about the C180 Sport Coupe, made to compete with the BMW Compact? :P

Uppon looking at this again, a few details have jumped out at me. First, i just want to clerify that i love the way this thing looks. It looks verry small, nice and light, and a coupe to boot. That being said, this is a 1 series, which is only a compact, (one notch below the 3 series) so it's probably not quite as small as it looks. At first glance the styling puts you in the mind of an extremely small car. Think a true Miata coupe and you'll get it. i cant think of a single car like that on the market and it's something i'd kill to see. But thats not what this is, it's just a normal compact, and that segment is flodded with economy models and some pretty potent performance models alike. (civic Si coupe, and chevy cobalt SS, just to name two) Besides being a BMW, this car isnt going to have much going for it once it comes to market.

[EDIT]
I forgot the 1 series is rear wheel drive, so scratch what i said about it not having much going for it. but it's still not the "miata coupe" it looks like it is, and i wish it was.

Mercedes does have some crappy cars like A class B class
we do have B class in Canada like a luxury version of Honda Fit
Mercedes is crappier caused they use front wheel drive
not like Bimmer 1-series using FR platform ... lot more poetential

-> It look gay if you ask me: :yuck:

^ It can easily be mistaken as the "premium version" of the unloved Toyota Echo. :indiff:

-> I'm not liking this 1-Series notchback thing, why can't BMW just bring this one first: :irked:

If they made it lose 500 pounds and kept still the 3.0L inline-6.... 💡 This car shares the same problem that the 318ti did: it looks like it got rear-ended by a semi, then they just bondoed the hell out of it. It's got great potential, but you can't design a small car by simply shortening the wheelbase. Didn't they learn that last time around? This only makes the 5-door look that much better (and it actually looks good).

The only 5-door that pops into my head that I don't hate is the SX4.

3-door hatchbacks FTMFW. 👍
