After more than a few questions asked in different threads about alcoholic drinks' rights and wrongs, ingredients and what not to mix with everything else, here's the much-needed:

GTP's Official Drink Thread!

I'm a whiskey-type, which I drink dry, on the rocks, or with water. I also enjoy Vodka with cranberry juice, Bloody Mary and Gin Tonic. And of course, beer.

This thread is to answer questions regarding drinking, but in no way does it endorse it, especially not for under 18 year olds (or 21, depending on where you're from).

As enjoyable as this thread might be, there are plenty of underage folks here that needn't have GTP as its source of mixed drinks.

Sorry guys.

Professor Farnsworth voice: Good news, everyone!

The moddy peeps have had a quick discussion, and we’re a-okay with this thread, as long (of course) as it sticks within the bounds of legality. 👍

Not that I care, since I don’t drink…

You can always mix Kool-Aid with a Sprite, or maybe Seltzer water to get any flavor soda you want. That is what I call crackalackin and poppaloppin.

Ginger Ale goes great with Grape-Fruit Juice. 👍

Do you guys mean within legality as in it's not ok for me to talk about alcoholic beverages?

Yay, common sense prevails!

And wait, Diego, you drink Gin & Tonic? Please man, that’s just a means to an end. :yuck:

Let’s put it this way: I don’t really have the time to look up everybody’s age, and furthermore, I don’t really have the time to look up the drinking laws in every jurisdiction represented on GTP, and furthermorerer, I don’t have the time to figure out if you’ve traveled to other countries with lower drinking ages. So interpret that as you wish. ;)

While in the UK where is was completely legal for me to drink I made a list of my favourites.

I enjoyed Scotch on the rocks, The Glenlevet mostly but really anything would do. Also the double shot of Jack Daniels and Coke was another pretty good stand in when it was still early in the night or Scotch was to expensive. I tried a couple other mixed drinks like a Mojito and a Mint Juelpa and both were great but they were a bit to sweet to drink all the time.

As for beer while in the UK I enjoyed 1664, Stella, Carling, and this dark ale called Hobgoblin which was in a pub not to far from Brasenose. While in Spain I liked to drink San Migel and Coronita...both were great beers.

As for wines, I like white wines better then red and I enjoy a good port as well. I also like some champagne which I drank quite frequently in England.

Now that I'm back in the US I still have a year before I can partake in drinking and I fully expect to stick with the stupid laws we have here and not consume alcohol.

Most of my alcohol intake is Leinenkugel's, which I think is the best affordable beer in the country, bar none (pun unintended). I don't know how easy it is to find outside of the midwest, though. My absolute favorite beers are Spaten Hell and Paulaner Weiß, and I'm usually drinking one of those whenever I'm at the local German bar.

I also tend to enjoy pretty much anything that isn't vodka. Straight, not mixed. Recently I've been turned on to Goldschläger, because it's so smooth and tasty.

Smooth? Looks like the gold would shred your throat… meanwhile, I loved this sentence from Wikipedia: “The human body is not able to digest precious metals.” Hmm? I think I’ll drink that! 💡

...I've only got four months left, and I'm having a hard enough time as it is. Legally speaking, there is always Canada, and there will always be Canada. In that situation, it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm buying (legally, in Canada), I usually am a Cap'n an' Diet Coke guy. I don't know why I like it better with Diet Coke, I just do. Otherwise, when I'm buying (legally, in Canada), I normally stick to the thicker beers. I don't like Corona and Miller Lite (my friends all love it), so I normally do the cheap American (but good!) Budweiser, although I can thank my Aunt for turning me onto Canadian beer on our last vacation. Labatt's has to be one of my favorites these days.

Hooray for Canada!

Oh Can-a-Da, my home an nai-tive laaand...

I can't bring myself to go over to Windsor to drink for whatever reason, I've been to the casino a couple times and yes I've had a drink or two (mostly wines with dinner) but I just don't think it's the same.

Okay, finally I get to ask my question.

What the heck is a martini?

I know they're colorful, which probably means guys aren't allowed to drink them. Even the name sounds feminine. Thoughts?

Also, the other day I had a girl give me a Smirnoff Ice. It was all there was, and I was thirsty, so I told her the gist. She handed me the drink and thought "Ahh, now I can drink this thing without looking like a pansy."

Dude, James Bond drinks Martinis. So it's not a chick drink. What it is, however, is Gin and Vermouth.

...I think you're thinking of an Apple-tini...

Yeah really... We went to a sketchy "bar" and a friend ordered one for $6. I don't think there was any alcohol in it. So glad I didn't get one.

Aww, you guys are no fun.

I'll do the work for you: 16, 21 is drinking age... there you go. :P

I've never really been a fan of any type of alcohol.

Tequila, my face almost imploded
Beer, didn't like it (then again, the last time i tasted it was a LONG time ago)
Wine, again didn't really like the taste
Vodka, wasn't too bad.

I went to the Great British Beer Festival at Earl's Court, London, two nights ago... A great time, several pints and a couple of pies were had by all! I sampled some of the finest beer from across the UK, and even ventured to the European bar for a spot of Czech beer too. Here, in chronological order, is a brief account of my samplings... 👍

22px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
Theakston's "Old Peculiar" 5.6% - 7/10  Dark and mighty strong, a bit over-powering in more ways than one, but a class act to get things going nevertheless.

22px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
Peak Ales "Swift Nick" 3.8% - 7/10 👍 Nick (Smallhorses) recommended a 'Spitting Feathers' and to my amazement I found it in the Guide, only to find that it was finished :guilty: - but I saw a beer call 'Swift Nick' at the same stand, and went for that instead. Nice, light refreshing beer, could drink it all day. VG.

22px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
Goose Eye "Barm Pot" 3.8% - 5/10 :odd: I had a legendarily bad pint of 'Goose Eye' back in 1992 and went to lay an old ghost to rest. Smelt a bit dodgy (vinegary) and looks awful like pee, but tasted pretty good. Not the best, but passable.

22px-Flag_of_Scotland.svg.png
Stewart "Pentland IPA" 4.1% - 9/10  From my neck of the woods (where I grew up), this was sex in a glass. Beautiful golden beer, smooth and great tasting, not too weak, not too strong - almost perfect!

22px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
Greene King "Ruddles County" 4.3% - 8.5/10 :D:tup: An old favourite from when I used to work in a real ale pub, never disappoints and simply have to have one whenever it's available - which is all too rare.

22px-Flag_of_the_Czech_Republic.svg.png
Bernard "Svatecni Lezak" 5.0% - 7/10 :) A bottled Czech lager, great quality but a bit gassy for later in the proceedings! :sly:

22px-Flag_of_England.svg.png
Grainstore "Rutland Panther" 3.4% - 5/10 :boggled: Black, chocolatey beer - had to get a pint called 'Rutland' as a tribute to UKGTP! Too strong flavoured and not enough kick for my liking, not a good companion for the long trip home either :ill: - but still a quality beer.

The night's entertainment was completed by a gig from 70's rockers, Dr. Feelgood, which spawned an interesting conversation with a friend of mine...

Andy: "Who are they?"
Me: "Dr. Feelgood"
Andy: "Are they famous??"
Me: "Apparently not."

Some picatures...

L-R: 1) Crapanoramic shot of Earl's Court venue 2) Commemorative GBBF Glass with additional Goose Eye, looking decidely 'urinal' 3) The Rutland Panther with tasty barmaid 4) A couple of likely geezers

👍 Long Island Iced Teas are my all time favourite choice. The only difficulty is finding a bartender that can make a decent one.

And then finding your way home afterwards...

I'm a simple guy - Beer and Scotch. Pref. from one of the smaller islands like Skye... Mmmm... Tar and harbor...

Banbury's local brews are from the 'Hook Norton' brewery, and very tasty they all are too. 'Golden Champion' is luuuuvvverly.

If you like Theakstons (drank vats of the stuff at Uni) then seek out 'Black Sheep Brewery'. It's actually 'Theakston' beer, from the man himself, rather than the brewery he sold.

As for spirits - Glenlivet 12yo Malt (and very specifically, the 12yo) is a fine, fine whisky. I drink Absolut vodka (not suckered by the marketing, it does have a unique taste which I enjoy.)

Anhone tried a "Dr. Pepper"? Mix just under half-pint of your favourite cola brand, just under half-pint of simple lager, and drop in a shot glass full of Amaretto. Drink 'energetically'. And w00t, it tastes like 'Dr Pepper'.

I could give you the recipe for the 'Purple Sub-atomic Tropical Space Hamster' but I think I'd get complaints from people who were enjoying themselves right up until they lost the power of perambulation.

At home, I drink fruit juices of all sorts, sometimes diluted down with water. I take hydration fairly seriously, I'm nuts enough to know that drinking plain water isn't actually very hydrating - you actually need to have a small amount of sugar or salt in them, so the body can process them properly.

Coke is a dilemma. It's exactly like how Vincent Vega describes pork in Pulp Fiction. You know it's bad for you, but you drink it because it can taste so gooooood. :)

And tea. Lots and lots of tea. Which I know is bad, but meh. It doesn't rot your teeth.
