Turtle Racing League - Race Night Recap
What a comeback for the Turtle Racing League! First off, welcome to the new members. It was great to have you around and hope to see you in future races. 👍 Now, on to the nitty gritty. There were two very exciting races, and I simply couldn’t catch all the action. But I’ll recap the interesting events I saw take place as best I can.
You knew it was going to be a fun night when in qualifying, the pole was swapped between several different drivers throughout the 15 minute duration. It was back and forth and back and forth between DolphDrago, GTP_Ph7shr, BionicDerp, and a driver or two more before Dolph was able to come out on top and nab the pole position. On to race 1!
The race started off, and after a couple of laps, there was a 3 car breakaway at the front of the pack including Dolph, Phish, and Derp. Another 3 car battle was unfolding not far behind with gears1000 leading Turtle newcomers GT5man_2000 and zooleg. Lap 6 saw Phish go off course, dropping to midpack. Meanwhile, a fierce battle for 3rd through 5th waged on. Derp stuck with Dolph for the first 2/3rds of the race until he crashed on lap 21. He slipped back into a fantastic 3 (which now became 4) car battle for 2nd, which included Gears, chocochocochip5 and GT5man. You could put a blanket over all the competitors as they crossed the line at the end of the lap (for those who saved the replay, you should check it out). Derp would loop it one more time the following lap, losing valuable time. But he wouldn’t give up. As the race wound down, the drivers were inseparable, and there was an insane race for 3rd. GT5man had pulled away to 2nd. But Gears, Choco, and Derp were still duking it out for each spot behind. Eventually, on the final lap, both Gears and Choco went off course mid lap, allowing Derp to pull away at the finish. Dolph rode off into the sunset figuratively and literally after Derp’s lap 21 off course excursion to take the win. GT5man cruised to a 2nd place finish, a cool 42 seconds behind Dolph, with Derp taking bronze. Gears’ off on the final lap proved to be less costly than Choco’s, as he would take 4th ahead of Choco in 5th. Spyagent1439 found himself in 6th place by the end, with zooleg finishing only a couple of seconds back in 7th. Skil777 was the last driver to cross the finish line in the time allotted, finishing his Turtle debut in 8th position. Xavierzapata, Phish, and intense3963 had difficulties, and stuck it out as long as they could. Engine woes and crashed racecars left them in 9th through 11th respectively, rounding out the field.
Race 2 would see Turtles slipping and sliding all over again for another 45 minutes. Among those who did not start race 2 were GT5man and Skil777. However, former Turtle lightningdf22b1 would join in on the fun. It was difficult to keep up with the drivers slipping and sliding on and off the track. Derp and Gears carried the Canadian banner for the first 3rd of the race, with a slew of win-hungry Americans behind. Unfortunately it would not last, as Gears had a nasty shunt in turn 3 on lap 13 while running 2nd, dropping him to 5th. Derp drove off to a fairly large lead at this point. A battle for 2nd ensued though, with Choco and Dolph breathing down Spyagent’s neck. Choco and Dolph were able to make their way around him, and started to pull away. Dolph eventually made his way around Choco, before Choco promptly looped it around less than half a lap later, dropping him back to 4th. Dolph went on a mission to chase down Derp. Alone, Derp proved to be the faster driver. But some lapped traffic played into Dolph’s favor, and he slowly ate away at Derp’s lead. With 2 to go, Derp got loose in turn 1 and found himself in the kitty litter. This put Dolph right on his tail. A wild battle ensued between the two Turtles as they raced hard for the lead. A bit over halfway through the lap, both Derp and Dolph found themselves out of control, along with Lightning ahead (they must have all hit a patch of oil or something) in the fast, closing right hand corners. Dolph managed to come out ahead and held on one last lap for his 2nd victory of the evening. Bionic, no doubt disappointed after such a strong run he saw slip away, still finished with a strong silver. Spyagent, Choco, and Zooleg would be the only drivers to cross the line before time ran out, finishing 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively. Gears and Lightning (who I noticed in the replay had a disadvantage as he was running sports hard tires instead of softs) finished 6th and 7th and time expired. Xavier parked his car at the end, leaving him in 8th. Phish and Intense both had tough races again, and finished with DNF’s, though Intense did have to leave early. They rounded out the field in 9th, and 10th to finish off the night.
Overall, Dolph had a perfect night, grabbing pole position, fast lap in each race, and sweeping the races. I guarantee you it won’t happen again. Not with a strong group of Turtles racing week in and week out. Bionic would finish 2nd overall. Choco and Spyagent tied for 3rd with 75 points on the evening, with Choco taking the spot with a faster lap of the two. Gears brought home a top 5 spot for the night. Zooleg and Xavier topped off their Turtle debuts with 6th and 7th place overall finishes. Meanwhile Phish and GT5man tied for 8th with 45 points. Like Choco, Phish grabbed the position with a faster lap than GT5man. Rounding out the field would be Intense in 10th, Lightning in 11th, and Skil777 in 12th overall.
