This might be better placed in a different thread, but I'm hoping to get some feedback on which wheel to purchase. I'm currently using the DS3 controller. A good friend of mine has the Driving Force GT and doesn't think the addition cost of the G27 is worth it. I've read reviews, but am looking for more feedback. I also need to get a wheel stand or possibly make a set up as well.

I have a little over $300 to spend on Amazon (through gift cards), so do you think I'm better off:

1- DFGT + WheelStand Pro (~$260)
2- G27 + make a basic stand (or save up more for a wheelstand) (~$250 + cost of material for homemade stand)

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

@KTR5, I highly sugguest the G27 over the DFGT..in my opinion the other wheel is much better

For rigs, the wheel stand is nice as well as the obutto products like ozone

When Qualifying, It is Set too Race Alone, You will not See any other Turtle On track, Though the fastest lap will continue to change when another racer crosses the line with a Faster lap time. Do Not back Out of Qualifying, In GT6, there is no way to enter back in, after Qualifying has begun. Everything Will be said before the Qualifying and Race 1 Begins. Qualifying should be treated as a race, All Racers should have their mic muted too give all the racers the concentration at all times. Keep your mic muted after qualifying has ended, as it will send you right to Race 1. Every Qualifying Session will last 15 Minutes.

Policies

The First Turn Rule
- It is the policy of this league for you to hold your position in turn 1 and not try to improve it unless the following situations occur: 1) The driver directly in front of you is asleep on the start. 2) The driver directly in front of you runs off course with at least 2 wheels off the track. 3) Obvious race incidents that must be avoided. 4) If you are able to fully draft past someone without incident or disruption to the other driver(s) with a reasonable distance before approaching the first turn.

Holding your position in the first turn is limited to the first turn on the first lap. This rule is in place for 2 reason: (1) to effectively avoid incidents in the first turn, and (2) so that drivers who are being careful and doing their part to avoid incidents in the 1st turn of are not taken advantage of. There is no sense in causing an incident in the congestion of the first turn. You can not win the race on the 1st turn or even the 1st lap. If a complaint is filed, the decision we make will be one that promotes an incident free first turn.

Dive Bombing

Dive bombing is unacceptable, and only results in incidents. It is not the same as passing under braking. Dive-bombing is when a trailing car intentionally brakes late to dive underneath the car in front of them as they are turning into a corner. The trailing driver must move to the low groove for at least 3-4 seconds prior to corner entry so that the leading driver can see the trailing drivers intentions in his mirror. However, running the low groove is not a guarantee that he will allow you to pass, it is only an indication that you wish to pass on the low side. The trailing driver must also have gained at least a half a car length lead before braking begins so the leading driver can see his position and avoid contact.

Mics During Racing

From the beginning of the race, until the last driver crosses the finish line, your mic should be on mute. This allows all racers to concentrate on their driving to the fullest. You may unmute to tell a driver your track position if racing in close proximity. If a racer is on mic by mistake, please feel free to say "Mic Check" to remind all racers to check.

Race Incidents

Legitimate complaints are encouraged, they insure a better racing environment for everyone. Complaints should be addressed by "Private Message" to the race steward of the race in which the incident occurred. It is a matter to respect every Turtle on the track, as we are competing against each other on the track, we all must remain clean at all times. If you know you made a mistake on the track by pushing a turtle off track, please let them gain their position back. We are Turtle Racing League, and we want to be remembered as a respectful clean racer towards any racer out there. Please include race number, lap number, and time of incident. A ruling will be announced after a video review by an independent steward. All racing incidents or racing related issues shall be dealt with privately and under no circumstance mentioned publicly.

When it comes to wheels, it's like buying a camera .... you often get what you pay for. Since your budget is limited as it is, that automatically rules out the two best non-commercial grade wheels, the Thrustmaster T500 RS and the Fanatec. As Phish recommended, the G27 is worth every penny over the DFGT. I used many of the cheaper GT wheels for years and invested in a G25 five years ago. I used it for 4 years and finally got my wife to cut loose the funds for the more expensive Thrustmaster. (now I'm looking at the Fanatec). In any case, the construction of the G27 is so far superior to the plastic DFGT that there is no comparison. The leather wrapped, 10 inch diameter stainless steel wheel is more durable and comfortable. The steering shaft on the G27 is supported in conventional ball bearings compared to plain plastic bushings in the DFGT. The G27 has two force feedback motors, the DFGT only has one. You also get the clutch with the gated shifter on the G27 if that's something that appeals to you. The natural dead-zone is much less on the G27 due to the helical gears. I wouldn't hesitate to spend the extra money for the better wheel. I'd also say that after using the Thrustmaster for a year, my G25 feels like a toy by comparison

Thank you for the details of your reasoning. Also, it's not that my budget is limited. It's that I have that much on Amazon through gift cards to spend. I take it that you feel the Thrustmaster is well worth the additional $250?

And I'm looking at Fanatec's website and they have the Porsche 911 GT3 RS V2 Value Pack XL US for $259, which is basically the same price as the G27 on Amazon.

So if we compare the Thurstmaster to the Fanatec, what are your thoughts now?

I'll be high:eek:
I'll drink to that!

I'm having a very rough time with my new wheel. I'd chalked it up to the fact that in all my 38yrs of gaming (1st console/Atari 2600/8yrs old) I've never ever played with anything other than a controller. It was simply against my religion, but with the advances in technology and hearing the voices of so many satisfied racers I decided to buy in. Seriously though! There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Each time I get into a different vehicle its a different experience some cars I can get the hang of after a lap or two others I simply cannot drive. Is this how its suppose to be, it certainly wasn't with my DS3? If any other wheel users have any words of advice or could link me to a related thread that I haven't found it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks @Ph1sher I'll keep at it. My biggest problem is the high speed instability. It comes on so quickly when I let off the throttle that theirs virtually no time to correct & after she starts to swerve to & fro its all over :grumpy:

Just give it some time busted, the big thing i learned with the Wheel is to Be really Smooth around the corners and take control of the wheel, don't let the car control you, by that i mean like for example the left right (S Turns) at Suzuka, just keep it flowing with the wheel from left to right nice and smooth and maybe take it easy around those turns at first but then slowly increase in speed again.

Also For me when i first got the wheel, running at the Nurb Nordschlief, with all the turns it helped me being patient around turns and not going off track

Hope This Helps you Busted! 👍

Like many things in life ... there are pros and cons. The wheel offers much more finesse and sensitivity. It also provides more of an immersive experience which with a little imagination, makes playing racing games more fun and feel more like driving a car rather than "playing a game". It adds an element of realism. The well acknowledged down side to the wheel over the DS3 is the fact that your thumb can travel 3/4 of an inch faster than your hands can turn the wheel 270 degrees. Catching an "oooops" with the wheel is harder but gets easier when you learn to adapt and move your hands faster than you normally do. There is an old adage in racing .... "he's got fast hands" ... and brother, you need them. All things considered, I'll take the wheel any day over a controller.

I don't know a lot about the Fanatec wheels other than the fact that the cheaper (lower cost) wheels have more technical issues than do the more expensive ones. My recent research and study had to do with the CSP (ClubSport Pedals) as I am looking for a way to adapt them to the Thrustmaster wheel. They work fine for PC racing but at this time, they do not work compatibly with a PS3. That is about to change though as a GTP member is going into production on an adapter that will allow them to work together and when it is available, I'll probably go that route.

As for the Thrustmaster T500 RS, it is the best wheel for the money, hands down. The GT wheel that comes with the basic unit is an 11 inch leather wrapped, stainless steel construction and largest diameter you can buy. Same as many real cars. It has the most powerful FFB motors in any unit on the market and includes the "PS Button" on the wheel which I don't think the G27 does (I know it's not on the G25). It was developed along with the help of Polyphony as a side by side joint venture and it's circuit boards and coding translate the FFB in the GT series better than any wheel, including the DFGT which was also developed along with PD. Everything about the unit is heavy duty. The pedals are not oil damped, load-cell design like the CSP but are still much better than the G27. I bought the Thrustmaster T500 RS on "Black Friday" 2012 when the $575 set was found on Amazon for $375. The optional Ferrari Formula 1 wheel normally selling for $175 was only $140 so I bought it also. The only drawback between the T500 and the G27 is that the T500 shift paddles are fixed to the housing and do not rotate with the wheel (just like most all the real paddle shift cars). It does take some adapting and works 99% as well in my opinion. However, adding the F1 wheel (which can be switched out with the GT wheel in about 1 minute) takes care of that issue because it has its own paddles that do rotate with it. As I mentioned, the T500 RS makes my G25 look and feel like a toy by comparison.
