Scores for Feb 12 have been pushed to Snail Data and is ready for the data specialists

Discovered a very useful driving tip for the RUF practicing after the races today. I'm sure all the higher division guys know this already but might be useful for some of the other drivers who don't know it. The technique is to give the car a lot of little blips of the throttle in slower corners. Allows you to get better angle and keeps the car from dropping off boost and causing spins. Was able to improve from a previous best of 2:05.9 to a 2:04.8 doing this.

Edit: after thinking about it a bit I'm not sure if this is actually a really good technique or if I just have bad throttle control!

I think the blipping (which I saw the faster D2 drivers using -- who were coincidentally also using controllers instead of wheels) actually keeps the car out of boost, not in it. Basically boost + turning = rear wheel spin. The game doesn't let you drive the turbo Porsche the way you would in real life. It gets part of it right with amazing braking and stellar turn in. However for a turbo Porsche to be fast you need to get on the throttle early to start building boost and do not under any circumstances lift. The second you lift, you'll get massive lift off oversteer and end up facing the wrong way.

@chuyler1 Yep! You just need to avoid this off-throttle situation (15-20% throttle is enough to stabilize the thing).Brake early and make the whole curve on throttle. If you're off-throttle, really small steering inputs will be fine.

I struggled immensely with this because I found it extremely difficult to control throttle on the DS3. I swear the first half of it's throw does absolutely nothing. Big difference to the DS4 and PCars. I don't know how the heck I ever competed in this game.

And I feel the same when it comes to PCars on the controller

I'd like to try out your PCars series, but everything about that game feels so off to me. I'm sure if I ditched GT completely and played nothing but PC it'd get a little better since theyre completely different games. Just having a hard time with it right out of the box. But I must say the graphics and sounds are awesome.

Project Cars is much better with being able to tune your device (controller or wheel). However, I was a bit pissed my G29 didn't work well out of the box. I've tried a few different settings and each one is slightly better than the next, but why they didn't configure some of these as defaults for major wheels is beyond me. Controllers aside...

Project Cars is definitely fun and the handling feels and sounds more lifelike. From the way tires break loose to the squeal of the brakes, to the immediate difference in feel as you load up the front tires and transfer weight to the rear, it's just more fun. I haven't got into any spec racing yet though, my consistency isn't quite there. When I jump back into Gran Turismo, I'm reminded how pixelated the tracks are. One other nice thing, hood cam that allows a rearview mirror. I use bumper cam in GT and there are times where it is too low to pick up the apexes.

This week's Miata/Laguna combo was still a blast as that car can be slid around the track while still maintaining control (this club needs to race more cars with their stock tires). However I gave up after 1 lap of the final race in the BTR. I just saw no reason to loop around by myself after spinning out. I was 4 seconds off pace and any effort to push the car harder just resulted in slower times. I was also off pace in the Challenger and after looking at the replays it was again a technique that controller drivers seem to master that I don't care to learn with a wheel.

I had the same problem in the beginning with PCars. It felt that the tire grip level is much lower. It felt like the car won't sit around the corner, or it spins out entering into or halfway through the corner. PCars is much more unforgiving when you brake and turn at the same time, or accelerate too quickly. I started to brake straight, then coast&turn and accelerate more consistently and found much better performance through the corners. Then I started to apply the same technique in GT6 and guess what.... lap times came down. (The faster guys will say "duh...?", but you don't know what you don't know, especially if you feel you get away with stuff because you don't spin out when you make that mistake...)

I decided PCars and me will only be cockpit view with steering wheel turned off. Some cars have a bit of visibility problems, but it is amazing how quickly you adapt if there is no other option.

I can't participate online yet. Saving money for the PS Plus subscription. But when SNAIL move over to the PS4 platform, I will have to open the wallet.

The round that received the most elimination votes was:
Round 2 - SRT Challenger SRT8 '08 (Sports: Medium) at Apricot Hill Raceway / Forward (7 laps)
Therefore the entire combo has been dropped from next week's line-up. Since @src_ej6 wins Prize A, he gets to choose an entirely new car and track combo to replace it.

The round that received the second most elimination votes was:
Round 3 - RUF BTR '86 (Sports: Medium) at Twin Ring Motegi Road Course (5 laps)
This means either the car or the track will be replaced for next week's line-up. Since @CoachMK21 gets Prize B, he has the option to freeze the car or the track, or he can give that option to the Prize C winner. If he gives the freeze away, then he gets to decide what car or track replaces the part of the combo that is left unfrozen by the Prize C winner.

Prize C goes to @Rob Brown so he gets whichever option the Prize B winner does not select.

Preliminary prize winners, please don't announce your prize selection until all incident reports have been filed and it has been confirmed that you don't have any penalties. It's also recommended that you review the SNAIL combo history and other data on our car and track history so that you can get an idea how many times we've raced each car and track. Please remember that originality is always appreciated, so picking cars and tracks that we've never raced is a plus (but not required). What's more important is that you thoroughly test any combo that you are considering before making it your official selection. For example, any car you select should not hit its rev limiter at any point during a race (even in the draft).

IMPORTANT: When posting your Prize A or Prize B selection, please list the complete in-game name of the car and/or track you are selecting. For example, if you want to select the Amuse Superlegara for your car, post "Amuse Nismo 380 RS Superlagara". If you want to select Monza for a track, post "Autodromo Nazionale Monza". This makes it much easier for the lineup to be updated accurately and also prevents confusing other league members as to which car or track you are selecting. Also, please be sure to list the PP and HP (after oil change) of any car you select.

I Agee cockpit driving is the only option. Anything else is video gaming - not sim-racing. Real race drivers can't sit on the roof of their car to see the apex better. Just a personal opinion, but a strong one.

It may be the immersion is lacking in GT6 but I just can't sit in the cockpit but in pCars it just feels natural

Agreed! I should've noted that my opinion changed with the introduction of PCars, and is shared with Assetto Corsa. The feeling was a little off in GT6 for me too, so I preferred bumper cam.

Why are so many people comparing a PS3 game to a PS4 game.....that IS apples and oranges with a mix of pineapple.......
Now as far as "trail-braking" is concerned, it is more easily executed with 50/50 to slightly more forward weighted cars. When you trail-brake an MR or more rear weighted car then your playing with fire.

I have tracked an E46 M3 which has 50/50 weight distribution, and I got pretty good at trail-braking that thing. What it does is that you go from slow in fast out, to fast in fast out.

You guys with PCars, can you test the trail-braking sensitivity of a given car to the changes of it's weight distribution?

The cockpit view in GT6 is a much closer field of view compared to PCars. It's around 60 if you change the FoV camera settings. I'm used to bumper cam in GT6 but in PCars it's much lower to the ground so I can't use it. When I'm right behind a car it blocks my whole view.

Oddly, the Ruf GT3 is a car that I really trail brake. I'm not sure at the moment of its exact weight bias, but the rear engine makes it drive much different than other GT3 cars. My favorite in terms of feeling "lively."

I'm going to start playing PCars more often to get more familiar with it. I agree with Penguin, the bumper cam is too low compared to GT. I bought it used from gamestop or else I'd offer to "shareplay" it. But I do have the digital copy of asseto corsa. So if anyone doesnt have it and wants to try it just let me know.
