How the hell did an 11 year old get a gun and 400 rounds of ammunition? Whoever gave him access to that needs to be found and questioned. They're as guilty as the kid.

If parents cant keep there guns and ammo in a lock box and the kid takes the gun and kills someone the parent should be charged with any murder the kid does with the gun.

Lets see how fast parents lock there guns up after a few a sent for murders their kids did with their gun.

I agree. If parents are going to have a firearm they need to make sure there is no way their children can get access to the weapons / ammo. The parents need to start getting charged for these cases as well. Locking a gun in a glass case will not prevent a child from getting the gun. If the parents are not responsible enough to watch their children, they need to make dang well sure they gun can not be accessed by the children.

+1.

If we're going to have parents charged with murder because their kid stole their gun and killed somebody then first we need to lower the age of legal adulthood from 18 to, say, 12, because god dammit a 12 year old should have enough sense to not steal a gun and kill somebody. You can't be sending parents of a 17 year old moron to prison because he killed somebody - unless they can prove the kid is incompetent or insane then he knows what he did and he should face the consequences. Murder and robbery.

While I agree with the premise I think putting murder on the parents is a bit extreme. A charge of criminal negligence causing death ( or something like that, not sure of the terminology ) would be appropriate. It is a gun owners responsibility to have weapons secured from anyone regardless of age.

Well that and what happens when your kid steals your car and runs someone over? I know guns aren't the same but a kid could just as easily steal a car to run someone over, and it's not reasonable to expect car keys to be under lock and key in a fingerprint scanner safe. I agree that you should have your guns and ammo safely stored but making parents responsible for it in that sense is a bit of a touchy concept when there's so many other ways it could be applied.
