How is it a big stink? I made two little comment regarding it. I just don't think NBA player should be allowed in the Olympics, just as I don't think NHL, MLB (I don't know if there are any playing), or MLS players should be either.
MLS? Olympic football teams can select any under 23 player from any professional football league in the world! Why should MLS be excluded? Olympic football is effectively the Under 23 World Cup, would you stop MLS players from playing in the World Cup?
(Yes I refuse to call it "soccer"…)

For what it's worth, there aren't any MLB players in the Olympics (I don't know why), and the Olympics doesn't have an ice hockey event (seeing as you mentioned NHL).

MLB is heading in to the end of their regular season and with the playoff bids around the corner no one is giving up their best players to the Olympics. If they did the teams that are just outside of playoff contention could suddenly win a bunch of games a steal some playoff spots form the otherwise better teams.

It is just about bad timing.

Oh, and the Winter Olympics does have ice hockey, using NHL players.

But I can understand Joey's thought on having athletes that care more about the achievement than anything else. Having non-professionals would make it seem more....pure?

The best example I can give is the 1980 Men's Olympic ice hockey USA team, they were a team of college kids and they won the gold medal. Granted I wasn't alive during that time but it seems like quite the accomplishment.

Speaking of whining like a baby about the Olympics, I wish Channel 4 News (in the UK) would do likewise... they kicked off their main evening bulletin this evening with a cringe-worthy display of stupidity that really ticked me off. One of their main anchors attended a press conference today and repeatedly asked an IOC spokeswoman whether or not the IOC was embarrassed by China's failure to honour promises they have made on human rights etc. Don't get me wrong, I have no sympathy for the Chinese government and don't feel that they deserve any lee-way simply because they are hosting the Olympics... but why do UK reporters persist in hassling the IOC? What do they want them to do? Cancel the rest of the Games? And this, by the way, was their TOP story... no matter that US/Russian relations are crashing and burning in Georgia. It's far more important that the IOC (those bastards!) are not wearing their "Free Tibet" T-shirts... :irked: It's not so much that I think that the IOC shouldn't say something on the issue, just that it is hardly top story material. I wouldn't be surprised if they followed that 'scoop' by reporting that it is currently raining in Glasgow!

I saw that too and im starting to think Channel 4 hates the Olympics because all they do is moan about them! as you said there not a lot the IOC can do... the games are like halfway through now and if some promises have been broken by the governments what can you do about it.... oh god cancel all the games! and also about the little girl lipsinking... oh jesus who cares... everyone loved the opening ceremony and what does it do kicking up all this so called 'dirt' after the fact! China seems to have put a stupidly high amount of effort into the games and all most journalists are doing is picking on everything other than the games itself!

Im loving the games and have been watching it every day, its slightly disappointing that BBC1&2 dont show a wide range of sports (dont have freeview and it seems like they are always in the pool!) but I think it should be about the sport and not about the country as much. I wish channel 4 (and also ITV) would just report the news as it is (medal here and there etc) and stop ruining the games as the news nowadays is gloomy enough!

Go to the BBC's website and watch the streams there. :)

Also, Fernando Gonzalez is a dishonest bastard. I hope he gets his ass whipped by Nadal in the final.

Here it is! The most iconic event ever! The Men's 20km walk!!!

EDIT: WOW Phelps.

He just came from absolutely nowhere. I thought Cavic had that. Amazing finish. Well that was crazy. Cavic had that and Phelps throws out a long arm in a stab and a hope and get its. Amazing. What a finish.

And Adlington is destroying the field in the 800m. A Cracking swim. Can she finish the job?

Of course she can she's British ;)

WR by over 2 seconds. Fantastic. Made my morning/night 👍

How he got the touch before I'll never know he just made a last gasp lunge at the wall and made it before Cavic. Unbelievable.

Fact of the day : If Phelps was a country he'd be 4th in the medal table.

I'm still waiting for more diving. For some reason any of the water sports has me completely captivated. Thus far, the track events have been very boring.

Bradley and Chris are just unbeatable in the velodrome.
Superb stuff from the whole GB team - and Becky Adlington is amazing

Fail on Maxim.
👍 Ditto - it's pathetic that the pinnacle of female athletic achievement can be reduced to a sad little beauty contest. What's next, the world's hunkiest politician??

If people want Olympic eye candy, just go watch the video on nbc's website of the beach volleyball cheerleaders.

They're cute, but it's the most pathetic thing I've seen in a while.

Damn! ... How good is Bolt? :scared:

He made it look so simple and yet showed he has so much left in the tank when he quits the showboating 10metres from the line

Michael Johnson's predictions have been spot on so far and this Bolt simply has no equal over the 100 ... will be interesting to see how he does in the 200 👍

Stunning exhibition of raw speed

🤬 !

Well, guys, I'm sorry to report that my cousin didn't make it to the discus finals. Neither did any of the other Americans-- my cousin did the best of the three. It seems everyone was 3 meters off of what they typically throw.

The shot put was no prettier, with only Christian Cantwell making the finals with his last throw. Reese Hoffa and Adam Nelson are out. There is also video on youtube of an official mis-marking one of Canadian Dylan Armstrong's throws.

This is a kick in the nuts for the throwers. It must have been terrible to have dealt with the diarrhea that everyone's been having over there. Hopefully the London games will be better as it's not so foreign.

Just saw it on the highlights show.

What just happened there?

Were they really the 7 next best 100m runners in the world? Bolt demolished them, and he wasn't trying for the last 30 metres....

Astonishing.

On that showing, Michael Johnson's 200m record is toast.

Photo finish in the women's double sculls (rowing).... wow. Gold by 0.01 sec

Mahe Drysdale is officially the most committed bloke on the planet now - takes bronze in the men's singles, having led in the third 500, and throws up immediately after finishing the race. Heck, he even had medical attention when he got to shore (via a ride in a dinghy). To medal (let alone even race) in the condition eh was in - damn he's mentally strong.

Silver in the men's 4000 individual pursuit, to that blasted Pom.

Gold in the shot put by a mile. :D

Sorry Chris, but go into your local newsagents and flick through a few girls goss' magazine and I guarantee atleast 2 will have articles on male athletes for purely aesthetic reasons.

Fit is fit.

Does no one else find it odd that Bolt relaxed for the last 20 meters and still broke the world record?

He is either the greatest runner ever to have lived or the greatest cheat...

Thats what I was thinking, either he is super gifted or he is doped up to the hilt! But Im sure with performances like that he would have been drugs tested many times in the games so far.

Even if I was that good I wouldn't have started a cabaret 10 meters from the line because I would have wanted to smash the record, i.e. power through and make it even harder for my record to be broken. Having said that is was entertaining.

Someone mind telling me who's judging the boxing rounds? I fail to see how China has now somehow managed to grow boxers who can defeat Russia & the U.K.'s best that easy.

I swear the swimming organisers did something to the pool - made it 5m too short or something.

The US swim team is amazing, and Phelps... well, he's superhuman.

removing image with swear word in it. The AUP covers pictures too..

Michael Phelps = Greatest Olympian Ever.

Congratulations to MP on reaching 8 gold medals in a single Olympiad. I am a swimmer myself, and without a doubt, If my children ever decide to swim competitively, I'll make sure to have Phelps and Dara Torres as an inspiration for them. :)

Just, amazing.

BTW, hey rocket punch, take the s word out, before a mod gets u ;)

I'd like to give Michael Phelps PLENTY of love for getting Gold Medals in all of the swimming events. Only thing that would have been unworldly was if he won all eight events while breaking the Olympic Record in all eight events. They give out gold medals, but he's a man of platinum.

In addition, did you see U. Bolt (Jamaica) pull away in that sprint? Dude won on a holeshot (to use drag racing terms) as he pulled away from the other eight sprinters. Breakneck speed!
