2011 Australian Grand Prix

F1 fan
The comment implies that he already believes himself to be the best driver of his generation. I admit he's a fantastic driver, but if you look at some of the things he has said, you will see he really is arrogant. If anyone can lay claim to be the best of the current generation, it is Alonso (and I'm a Vettel fan) but Fernando at least has the sense to give due credit to his rivals and actually comes across as a nice guy most of the time... Lewis just seems to have an attitude that he's the best, he's special and that it's not Formula one, but the lewis hamilton show. He also used to use every little excuse to compare himself to Ayrton Senna.

Mark Webber doesn't compare himself to anyone. He's very blunt in the sense that he wants to be world champion, but he doesn't underestimate his rivals. He generally makes no stupid claims to the media and comes across as a genuinely nice guy. As does Button.

Vettel clearly has his eye's on Schumi's records, but seems very humble. Hamilton just has this attitude that I don't like. Maybe some don't see it, but he has an attitude like he's the golden child.

Look at the first lap in valencia. He gave Vettel a choice. Hit the wall or hit lewis's car. Vettel chose the latter and lewis was on the radio immediately "Vettel hit me". Seemed to me that he was trying for a penalty. He reminds me of the footballers who roll around on the ground at the slightest bit of contact, but when the referee says "No foul" they're back up immediately as if nothing happened. And the whole "Liegate" thing... He's a dirty sportsman and will result to cheating to get his way. But some people think he's an angel. I can't understand it.

I completely agree with most of your post.

JB and mark webber seem like legit nice guys.

Lewis, while I don't hate as much as you do, defiently has some narcissism problems.
I watched his interview on top gear recently, and one thing that I thought was interesting was he said as they were talking, something along the lines of
"Haha. My dad seriously thinks he is a better driver than me"
While I understand this is a joke, it still I think sums up Lewis Hamilton.
Nice guy, but dirty driver, and a little too self-centered.

Vettel. I haven't made up my mind about him yet. Either he is just a little immature, and he will get better in a few years, or he will turn out like Lewis Hamilton.

Where I disagree with you though, is Fernanado Alonso.
He is EASILY the worst of them all.
He has a bad attitude, he is egotistic, and a very dirty driver. Seems like a major douchbag.

5 hours and 20 minutes till qualifying. I'm super excited.:D:D:D
Go Renault.:D
I'd say that Button will take pole followed by Hamilton then Vettel, Massa, Alonso then Webber. In that order.

Woot can't wait

I caught P2 on Speed HD last night - seems like McLaren was on tap

I don't really care who wins, just want to watch some good racing

Seems like tires will be the issue this season - everyone was struggling to keep their cars on the track yesterday

The weather forecast is saying that there's a light shower in Melbourne this morning and predicting the rest of the day to be cloudy...

Another tough times for the teams and another test for the Pirrelis...

It will be interesting to see how tyres are managed in qualifying and hopefully we don't see people going into the back of other cars in Q1. The race performance might highly depend on qualifying in terms of the number of tyres used and 11th Place could be seen as an advantage due to using less tyres and also being able to start on a fresh set and on the harder compound to minimise pit stops.

I can see a lot of driver errors ocurring, maybe even from the top drivers making quite a few look a bit like amateurs. Maybe there will be less errors in race compared to qualifying though.

In quali, the only variable is going to be the lower teams running on softs while the top teams run on hards for q1. With the reintroduction of the 107% rule there could be some upsets. I'm more interested in how the tyres will perfom during the race itself however.

*edit*
Danny, I'm gonna have words with you!

*edit2*
sems... GOOOONER!!

On the Hamilton/arrogance debate - I think in general all racing drivers are somewhat arrogant as it comes with the territory. If you do not believe you are the best, you won't get far in competitive sports. Of course all the F1 drivers have ego issues, its what drives them. Its what drives most people to go faster, to prove they are the best.

I don't think Hamilton is particularly any more arrogant than any other driver today. I do think his character is a little plastic though, I can't really put my finger on exactly why he doesn't connect with me but he just doesn't. Jenson, Mark even Kamui Kobayashi seem more down-to-earth personalities to me, which makes them very easy to like.

Kind of like how I've never really liked Schumacher's personality, I just can't trust the guy.

I would certainly rate Lewis quite high. As good as Fangio? Sadly I have only seen the odd bit of footage of Fangio's driving (the same with Jim Clark). So its difficult for me to really compare. But to make it simpler, I believe Senna had similar if not more talent in a car than Fangio and Clark and I don't think Lewis is quite as good as Senna was...at least not yet.
I would say Lewis is very similar to Nigel Mansell in his day, fast, great battler, very daring..almost foolishly so.

Indeed. You can only compare drivers that have raced against each other. A guy driving like Hamilton would not survive one full year in the 50's F1. He makes too many mistakes that would be fatal in those times.

A guy driving like Fangio did but in modern day F1 would be hopelessly slow.

That's why a 40 year old could be successful back then. Survival of the wisest.

All F1 drivers today require pace above wisdom. Stewart and other safety pioneers changed things for the better. Pedro Rodriguez was my favorite of the wisdom drivers who also had pace. I think Prost had wisdom, even if he didn't use it 100% of the time.

Prost was 100% "wisdom"..thats why he was called The Professor, he never went all out all the time, only when the situation required it. But when he did go for it, he wasn't slow.
While Prost's approach is not seen as heroic or mighty as Senna's, he was just as impressive if not more impressive a driver. He was more "complete".

Can someone change the day for starting a new thread about the race to a Tuesday? Because if it doesn't get changed we could end up kind of like Brazil last year where the front page was spent arguing.

FP3 offers the best sense of everybody's relative speed. I think. I'm looking forward to the end of this session....and obviously qualifying.

Is anyone else having problems with the official live timing? The external window doesn't actually want to load completely and the timing within Formula1.com appears to freeze the timing when switching between tabs.

Button just set a flyer of 1:25.961! I think that's the fastest of the weekend. HRT have still not set a timed lap.

edit: Vettel with a 1:25.327. The times are really dropping now. I think it's time to run the cars in qualifying-spec.

Both Red Bulls finish P3 over a second faster than Hamilton's third position. That is QUICK!:D

But man, that HRT car is painfully slow!!

It's hard not to laugh at HRT...they're just embarrassing themselves at this pace. I liked seeing Sauber being faster than both Mercedes', my guess is they're gonna be leading the midfield along with Renault and Williams.

The McLaren update they brought down under paired with the radical styling of the rest of the car seems to be paying off. In a little over 24hrs we will see for certain.

Man, watching and keeping track of HRT's story is pure 90s backmarker stuff. Love it. 👍
Screw those who think it looks unprofessional, I love an underdog story and these guys are still trying to make the grid on nothing. People around the internet are taking the opportunity to stick the boot in but I think all things considered they are doing an amazing job. Sure, Carabante and the financial side certainly need to sort themselves out, but Colin Kolles has somehow done it again getting this team on the grid with little to no support. One wonders what they might have achieved had the Toyota deal or the Dallara supply been achieved.

But, the F1 circus is so professional, it's almost painful to see such an unprofessional team.. Still fun though, if they would get a fast pace..

HRT's effort is admirable. I really hope they can set a time later today that doesn't break the 107% rule. It seems unlikely. It would be such a shame to see a team get a car out this late, then not be able to compete in a race for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if they miss out on Australia and the forthcoming races though.

I heard the comentators say that they thought the teams had unanimously agreed to bypass the 107% rule for this race only, just so all 24 cars could start the season opener. I know that it's just speculation, but i would love to see HRT start the race on Sunday. (or saturday night here on the west coast :D)

How on earth did the HRT wind up being slower than it was last year? It's not even a fraction, but a whole 5 seconds slower than they were last year.:scared:

I'm all for an underdog story, but sometimes you just have to put the three legged, one eye scruffy thing down for it's own good.

Very happy to see McLaren isn't as slow as some people were saying. Now I just have to hope that their durability is better as well.
