2014 BMW M3/M4, will it be tri turbo or not? Answer is sort of

Collector cars are always worth it mainly due to the depreciation resistance.

The outright price though always ends up ridiculous due to bespoke parts and the fact the brand knows they will sell them easily.
I saw the E92 GTS up for sale at £110,000 and it only took around a week to look for a buyer. These cars are meant to be driven hard but it is sad that some are left in a garage, while the owner glosses over any opportunity to sell it at a good profit.

I hate capitalism sometimes. :D

I'm quite sure it's Club Sport.

Traditionally it's taken to be Coupe Sport, as in Coupe Sport Lightweight (a.k.a. CSL) but without the Lightweight bits. Where BMW have had models called 'Club Sport' they tend to be just be called Club Sport, rather than abbreviated.

edit: to add to that, the GTS itself comes with an optional Club Sport package - this might be market dependent, but it adds the roll cage, 6 point harnesses, and Fire Extinguisher.

Thanks Matski for giving a more in depth response 👍

The pricing just kills me.

BMW's hi-po M3 and M4 Competition variants sprint into showrooms this month with a $5000 premium over the already spicy models on which they are based.

The Competition moniker is added to the four-door M3 sedan for $144,900 excluding on-road costs, the M4 two-door Coupe is priced from $154,900 and the drop-top M4 Convertible is available from $165,900.

Rather than simply being limited-edition models with a small allocation for the Australian market, or a Competition Package option, the tuned-up trio will form a permanent part of the BMW M line-up taking the number of M3/M4 variants to six Down Under.

Under the chunky bonnet of all three models is BMW's TwinPower turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine with the wick turned up to 331kW – a 14kW increase over the standard M3/M4 – while torque remains at 550Nm.

A seven-speed 'M' dual-clutch transmission is standard, but keen buyers can opt for a six-speed manual gearbox at no extra cost.

In auto guise the M3 and M4 Coupe can race from 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds, or 0.1s quicker than the standard models, while the Convertible covers the same distance in 4.3s. When matched with the manual, the 0-100km/h dash increases to 4.2s for the M3/M4 Coupe and 4.5s for the drop-top.

Underneath, the Competition models gain new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars and a new calibration for the Active M Differential for improved drivability and traction. They also have machine-polished star-spoke 20-inch M light alloy wheels and mixed tyres (265/30 R20 front and 285/30 R20 rear).

BMW has added new settings in the Adaptive M Suspension set-up for each of the three driving modes – Comfort, Sport and Sport+ – to complement the upgrades, while the Dynamic Stability Control system has been reconfigured.

The Competition is differentiated from its regular M3 and M4 siblings by a Shadow Line trim that is sourced from the BMW Individual collection, a high-gloss black finish for the grille, side airvents, window trims, the model badge at the rear of the car and the quad tailpipes from the M sports exhaust system that 'crackles' on overrun.

Upgrades to the cabin include special M leather sports that feature cut-outs to reduce weight, and woven BMW M stripes on the seatbelts.

All three body styles feature the same standard specification list as the standard M3/M4 models, which includes a head-up display, extended leather trim that carries over to the dash, extended smartphone connectivity and the keyless comfort access system among many others.

The practically innumerable options for the hot Germans include, but is not limited to, special paint and various upholstery and interior trim choices as well as a selection of safety and comfort packages.

BMW Group Australia head of product and market planning Shawn Ticehurst said the BMW M3 and M4 Competition are a strong addition to the M line-up, following the recent launch of the M2 Coupe.

“With more power, enhanced suspension and bespoke settings for the differential and stability control systems, the Competition variants are aptly named,” he said.

“Arriving hot on the heels of the M2, the M3/M4 Competition models prove that BMW M is on a roll in the company’s centenary.”

I like the Style 666M wheels, they're somewhat reminiscent of splitties from the Group 5 era, though the colour highlights on the GTS wheels look rubbish.

You could always specify the Carbon/Aluminium compound wheels instead...

.. a bargain at £10,000 ($15,000 US).

I'm a fan of the 666 wheels in the brushed metal finish. The GTS variant is awful, however.

I bet they're cheap to repair when curbed.:nervous:

At least you've got no danger of buckling them :P

Actually with aluminium and carbon would they shatter/crack or could they still buckle/bend?

How light are those?

7kg less overall than the GTS 666M wheels, which for a set would weigh ~ 47.4kg.. so ~ 40.4kg for a set of these, I'd guess maybe 9.8kg for a front wheel and 10.5kg for a rear wheel. Light for 20" wheels perhaps, but still heavier than the 18" option on the standard M4.

They appear to be a carbon rim with alloy spokes, so the rim at least is most likely to shatter/splinter. I guess the weakest spot will be where the two materials meet.

Holy hell, & I thought a client-personalized M3 that ended up at $102,000 was crazy.

Luxury car tax for you.
Even in the US, that M3 comes out around $105,000. That's well above even a decently equipped example.

The Competition models are just priced in another world as first evident by the M6 Competition.

That was very inventive of Halfords to protect the wings like that.

Ouch: If nearly $300,000 does not break the budget, M4 GTS customers can add a $21,560 set of carbon-fibre wheels, making the exclusive 4 Series the most expensive model in the BMW range.

BMW has confirmed that the strictly limited hardcore GTS version of its M4 will be offered in Australia for a whopping $295,000 before on-road costs, but the announcement will not come as good news to all but 25 local rare-BMW enthusiasts, with the entire allocation already spoken for.

Following the overseas reveal of the M4 GTS in October last year, at least 25 Australian M-fanatics placed deposits on the unconfirmed model in the hope that a number would be offered Down Under – something the car-maker can today confirm.

BMW Group Australia corporate communications general manager Lenore Fletcher told GoAuto that the run of 25 cars had all been snapped up by fast-acting and well-heeled enthusiasts, before Germany had even decided to offer the GTS here.

“As soon as the international release came out we had people who were straight in,” she said. “They don't care what it costs, they don't care when it's getting here they just want one.”

But Ms Fletcher explained that there could have been more disappointments with a greater number of the exclusive cars earmarked for Australia than first thought out of the total 700 worldwide production run.

“The 25, in actual fact, is more than was initially thought would be delivered,” she said.

With the M4 GTS price now revealed, the 25 early adopters will be asked to pay just under double the cost of a regular BMW M4 Coupe, which at $149,900 is a sizable $145,100 cheaper.

For the extra capital, the lucky few will get a dose of hardcore performance-focused modifications, starting with race-derived water injection and increased boost pressure to 2.5 bar, which takes the power of the 3.0-litre turbo straight-six engine up 51kW and 50Nm to 368kW/600Nm.

The extra grunt has cut the zero to 100km/h by a significant 1.2 seconds for a dash of 3.8s and a new top speed of 305km/h is possible if you find a road long enough.

BMW says the M4 GTS is quicker in corners too thanks to a specific tunable suspension set up, while more influential aerodynamics in the form of a conspicuous carbon-fibre spoiler and two-position adjustable front splitter combine for greater downforce.

Dynamics are also enhanced by a 30kg weight reduction thanks to carbon-fibre Recaro racing seats, the removal of the rear seats, a unique centre console, carbon-fibre bonnet and exotic carbon-ceramic brakes.

On the outside, the GTS is identifiable by yet more carbon-fibre for the rear diffuser, a titanium quad exhaust system, organic LED tail lights and flashes of Acid Orange.

Standard alloy wheels measure 20-inches at the back and 19-inch at the front, and wear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber, but customers wanting the most complete M4 GTS are offered a carbon-fibre wheel option for another $21,560.

With the optional wheels added into the mix, the M4 GTS is BMW's most expensive car offered in Australia.

For a more race-car like GTS, BMW also offers a no-cost optional Race Package which adds a street-legal roll-cage, six-point racing harnesses and a fire extinguisher system.

BMW is yet to confirm the proportion of customers opting for the top-spec wheels and race bits, but the car-maker said at least one customer has listed both wheels and cage for their car.

The 25 sold cars will be delivered to their beaming owners in September this year.

That almost looks tasteful understated.

Almost.
