2014 BMW M3/M4, will it be tri turbo or not? Answer is sort of

It's a no brainier to get a GT3. I be happy to get a normal M4 and tune it to my specifications which would cost way less than getting a GTS.

Surely then, the no brainer thing to do, would be to get an M4, tune it to GTS levels for way less cost, then you have a car which will be on par with the GT3, and will have thee engine in a sensible place :D ... profit!

The GTS range are meant to be competitors of the GT3. I will estimate the car being priced around £90-100k.

I'm questioning why you would compete at that level with a 2-door saloon based on a £20k entry level architecture in the first place.

A sports car the M4 is not. It's a fast saloon car.

And from nearly all reports, it's not even a particularly great one this generation.

The special model M3's (now M4's) just seem to be getting worse each time. The CSL is revered now. The M3 GTS got decent enough reviews, but the price was even more outrageous than the CSL's. This is just asking for insane amounts of cash, and looks even worse than the regular car.

I'm sure they'll sell all 700, because collectors, but what a disappointment.

Compared the engine in 991 GT3 and the massaged N55 that is the S55 (regardless of what BMW say) and it's a no brainer.

Call it personal bias, but I think the M4 GTS makes a fairly persuasive argument...

Looking forward to finding one in the flesh, I've notched up 3 E92 GTS spots, and one E90 CRT spot (I had to go a long way for that!)... with only 30 of these coming to the UK it will be exciting to see one. FWIW I do quite like the 911 GT3 RS... had a good nose around one at Silverstone the weekend before last... but I'm still 30 years off feeling like I might need a Porsche in my life.

It's barely more powerful, has a fair amount more torque, but sounds worse, will never match the responsiveness of the Porsche engine, is nearly 200lbs heavier, and will list for £20k more than the GT3.

I'm sure people equally blinded by the blue and white badge will gravitate towards it - something that admittedly happens with Porsche too - but I really don't see how the M4 would come out ahead in a direct comparison. Especially as already noted, the stock model has hardly garnered a positive response so far.

Wait wait wait, I just need to get my flame suit on..

Okay, ready...

I'm blinded by the badge because my personal preference is towards an FR coupe based model with an I6? because I don't find SuperBeetles particularly attractive? Because since I was 10 high performance 'regular' cars have appealed more to me than multiple indistuingishable versions of cars that all look the same? Please... badge has got **** all to do with it.. oops, sorry, I forgot, since my preference may not be backed up by roadtest reviews I must be wrong, because preference can only be based on empirical data

edit: I'm totally buying one of them suits by the way :D

There's nothing wrong with liking it.

I don't like it.

I like the whole Q-car thing, and inline sixes and the FR layout etc. Because of that, I like a lot of BMWs. But, purely in terms of aesthetics, I don't like the M4, and definitely not this GTS.

Call it personal bias.

Wow, for a fraction of the GTS' price, you can look like at least as much of a nozzle, if not more so.
I like them...

:(

Seriously though, I like how the M4 looks minus the spoiler and I especially like that paint scheme it has. As a matter of fact, I might go replicate that on FM6. :D

For the price of M4 GTS I'd rather get Cayman GT4 and use the rest for gas, insurance and HPDI classes..

I think the M3 looks great. Very muscular towards the rear, whereas the 4 is just visually softer around its rear wheels.

The 4/M4 has a really chubby, bloated looking rear in my opinion.

Sorry for double posting but the video of the M4 GTS around the Nordschleife has been released.

3 seconds off the pace of the GT3. Not terrible by any means, & with GT3 allocations done and the used market wanting silly money right now, the GTS isn't really that bad of an option.

Have some data readings with your BMW.

Joking aside, I have to admit this car isn't as bad operational wise as I was hoping it would be for a tacky and elitist as it was put forth. I'm impressed with the overall look of the handling, engine note and dynamic of it all. More throw back to why people who are car fans, like bmw and less of what they seemed to be more into. Rather than making people with a decent bit of coin look good or pretentious at the cost of performance against the competition.

Collector cars are always worth it mainly due to the depreciation resistance.

The outright price though always ends up ridiculous due to bespoke parts and the fact the brand knows they will sell them easily.
