2016 GT350 Render [Car and Driver]

25-cars-worth-waiting-for-11-2016-ford-mustang-shelby-gt350-inline-photo-585485-s-original.jpg

Expect a higher displacement 5.0L with a flat-plane crankshaft [read: European V8 sound] so it's able to rev well over 8,000rpm and is expected to put out 550-600 horsepower mounted exclusively to a close ratio 6 speed manual transmission (no automatics) and send power through a limited slip differential. Car and Driver is estimating MSRP at around $50,000. This is supposed to be a "spiritual successor" to the Boss 302, so expect it to be set up similar as far as a suspension and brake package (stock).

All I got to say is that render looks WICKED.

I like it, but it's not an original Shelby, now that Carroll Shelby passed away. No signature on the dash, and no "GT350" lettering. Ford apparently is building this one to expect more money because it has the Shelby name.

It's a render, not the actual thing.

I don't like the hood scoop but damn, 550hp 5L V8 in a Mustang that isn't the top trim? Even for a render/estimate...

It might actually end up being top trim. It's supposedly lighter than the current model and with a slightly less amount of power but with IRS should be similar to a Boss in handling but as quick as a GT500.

As far as I know there are no plans for a GT500, but I could be wrong. It seems the GT350 is getting all the treatment.

It seems like Ford is really geting serious with making the Mustang a serious performer, and for a good value too. For roughly $6k more than a previous Boss 302, your are getting what could be a potential GT500 killer with a serious handling and power package. Remember this car is getting 315s for tires stock, has IRS very large wheels and large Brembo brakes etc etc. I was reading earlier that this car could potentially kill everything Ford has put out performance wise.

Actually, that might not be out of the question. Maybe not on release but in a few years for a facelift.

Recent Mustangs are putting out over 110 horsepower more than the GT, and that's not including the extremely expensive and pointless 1,200hp factory cars (GT1000).

When and if power levels increase on this car, and they can get the weight down and dial in the handling, I for one would not be surprised to see the Mustang smoke the GT in a few years time. We've come a long way in almost 10 years, and its showing.

Do you really think shelby has had anything to do with building the GT500 besides a marketing video? Really? I mean, I'm sure they COULD put his signature on the dash, same as they've been doing for the past 6 or 7 years. It's all marketing anyway. Why stop now?

The older Shelby, yes. The newer ones, I agree, were probably done more by the Shelby American Company.

Even if they did put his signature on the dash, it would be completely useless. The Older Shelbys, and I'm pretty sure the newer ones in Carroll Shelby's lifetime, were signed by Carroll himself. Building a Shelby Mustang now, for that reason, would just not be the same.

Shelby hasn't had a serious involvement with the Mustang since 1968. Everything after has been developed by Ford. The only thing Shelby did was take a few pictures with it and sign the dash.

Would it kill a Ford GT?
Cause that would be nuts

I doubt it would kill a GT. In a straight line maybe, but not in a hot lap around somewhere like Silverstone or COTA.

I'm guessing that Ford will still regard the GT highly and wouldn't really want a Mustang to be faster than it. Granted it's not being produced anymore so they don't have to worry about selling new ones but still. That's my thoughts anyway.

The car has been out of production for nearly 10 years. I don't really think Ford cares that much about it anymore.

I'm willing to bet the 2013/14 GT500 can already outrun it in a straight line, or at least match it. The GT is only 500lbs lighter than lasts years GT500 and the GT500 has roughly 110 horsepower (and torque, and actually uses a GT camshaft) more than the GT, so the only major advantage it has over the Mustang is aerodynamics and IRS. If the new Mustang's weight loss is 400+ lbs like they say it is (this is really a hangup), with what appears to be better aerodynamics, wider stance, having IRS, 315's slapped on it, and potentially just as much power as the current GT500 (maybe even more, in a few years time, and that's not even the special edition ones), I'd say it very well could be faster than the GT.

They will care about it but how much I'm not sure, if I was them I'd care about it.

As for the new Mustang, IF is a big word in that sentence. So IF it has all those features then it could give the GT a run for it's money. As you said the GT is 500lbs lighter than the current GT500 but dropping 400lbs would still make the GT 100lbs lighter, the GT will have better aerodynamics than the new Mustang anyway and more likely a lower centre of gravity. I'd say that the new Mustang would be faster around certain tracks that demand long straights. (Monza, Hockenheimring etc) but tighter twisty tracks like COTA, Nurburgring the GT will be quicker.

But again, it's all speculation, let's wait for the initial car to come out first.

You are vastly underestimating the effect of a lower Cg, better suspension, and better weight distribution.

If it can't outperform it, I think it will at least match it.

As I said, vastly.

A car cornering with 600 horsepower that can only put down half of that has 300hp.

A car cornering with 500hp that can put down 3/4 of that has 375hp.

The GT500 loses around most tracks to the ZL1, which has about the same power as a GT but weighs a thousand pounds more, has a higher Cg, and has worse weight balance. Power doesn't make you faster unless you can put it down. The GT500 is bad at putting that power down.

I agree and I think that's where the new car has the advantage over the current model. Then again we have yet to see what its packing underneath or even what its capable of.

The way things are shaping up, this car could be quite a performer and it seems as if Ford is now focusing on the handling aspect rather the brute power, or a combination of both. I would not be surprised if the new Mustang runs circles around current models.

I could have sworn there was a magazine or a online car blog that tested the '13 or '14 GT500 VS a Ford GT on a road course. I cannot recall who did it or what the results were. I will have to keep digging for it.

There is a video on YouTube but its in a different language. Just Google GT500 vs Ford GT and it comes up.

New wheels and color. Couple sources are saying this could potentially be a new Bullet.
