Are there normally only 55 garages available for Le Mans?
That's the point of the class (and its name). Its an extra entry that is not in any class that is allowed to enter as to allow for development/experimental purposes. This year they had the heroic entry of a quadruple amputy running a modified LMP2 as the Garage 56 entry (and finishing well amongst the overall classification).

55 was the usual number. Now Le Mans can have 60 I believe.

So what happened to the 44 R8? How did the 33 Viper get the win? I'm missing something, I know, but....how?
It was mentioned before, but the primary Am driver in the car didn't meet the minimum drive time and was moved to the back of the field as a punishment for that violation.

TRG will be entering 1 car full season for 2017, and 2 for the NAEC. Fingers crossed its Aston Martin, but unfortunately its up in the air. Will be a European make though. I bet its either Aston Martin (have a massive fleet of Astons), Mercedes (since Mercedes-Benz have shares in Aston), Lamborghini (Super Trofeo entry possibly next year if that means anything), or Porsche (because previous ties).

Should be worth mentioning that it was because of their delay in thinking about joining for 2016 and AMR being stupid about the fee that TRG did not participate in this season (aside from their couple of appearances).

Mercedes do not own Aston? It's 5% owned by Daimler, but the largest ownership is still Prestige Motor Holdings owning 39% share
Well I meant that, but it still could have an affect possibly. Just grabbing at straws, but seeing how Aston seemingly isn't entirely interested (unfortunately) in IMSA, and Mercedes has expressed interest, who knows. It'd make sense being as they're a large well put together team who would be very handy to any factory effort.

I've heard rumors of Lamborghini being the strongest pull. But I don't know if that's true, or just Lamborghini trying to play it up.

It wouldn't surprise me (and I'd very much like that, not Aston but heck that Huracan is a beauty), especially with the possibility of them entering a team in Super trofeo. Lamborghini also seems to give very good support, so it'd be a bonus for TRG as well.

So I didn't realize until recently just how expensive it is to buy a GT3 car. A Camaro was quoted at 195,000 Euros, which is sort of what I'd expect a GT3 car to cost, but a Ferrari 458 I think it was, cost around 750,000 Euros And most other stuff was towards the middle of those two price points. I guess that probably turns my idea of running GTD one day when Weathertech is at Mosport into a pipedream. Maybe Continental Tire Challenge would be the better option. :P

The Camaro would still be competitive though. :P Could also always buy a used one. ;)

Time to start counting! :D

Here's a silly season update for the GTLM class.

Sounds like the big changes are coming from the IMSA regulars Porsche (CORE) and RLL (the latter being no surprise). There could also potentially a couple Daytona only entries and maybe a NAEC entry as well.
