Just can't get over how badass the new cars look on the track.

I'm just so happy to see some damn colours (Mercedes and Red Bull notwithstanding). The Renault looks awesome, and it's nice to see a splash of orange. I do wonder what Williams is thinking now that they've seen all the other cars - I wonder if they maybe didn't do quite enough.

That's a good point actually. Don't get me wrong, when Williams released that they'd have the martini livery I was very pleased, and it still looks brilliant.

However I think it wouldn't hurt to switch it up from white and perhaps have a different base colour like the green Martini livery on the Lotus 79

Or even red, like the classic design used on the Brabhams, obviously still using the design Williams have atm.

Wow, studio shots again nowhere near as awesome as on track action shots. The stance of these cars and their lower slung appearance is so DANG good looking! The rear wing plays a big part of it, didn't realise how hideous the rear wings have been since 2008.

That'd be awesome.

How about the rake of the cars? I noticed in some of the Ferrari shots that they seemed more angled than last year (remember how Red Bull had a serious rake from the back to the front of the car?). Anyone running crazy this year?

Lots of them, and there's a lot more of it this year because the floor stops sooner.

They really do look incredibly fast. And the Mclaren does look indeed better the more I look at it.

Please Mclaren, don't be a turd this season...

I cannot be the only guy who's secretly dreaming of a Verstappen - Vandoorne rivalry?

Melbourne can't be here quick enough!

We shall see, that would be an awesome rivalry if it became one. :D

The only major problem I have with the engines is that they all sound the same. Back in the day, you could tell a Cosworth from a Ferrari or a Peugeot from a Renault. I know that there are fewer suppliers now but still...

Or am I on my own here?

Edit: Listen for yourself.

The shriek of the Talbot-Matra was unforgettable. The Toleman-Hart, not so much.

Agreed. Its a combination of they all sound neutered and the same. They are a tad louder (by 2%), but it's such a depressing note. :( And 4 notes that all sound the same...

If they could get them to Indycar levels of sweetness I'd be ecstatic. That'd be the first step. Then somehow getting each to sound different. Not by artificial means, but natural design choice means.

They would have to unleash the rpm limits to get the proper sound back. But then, more engines would have to be built and costs go up. So no, it won't happen. :irked:

Cars look good in motion. 👍 If only they didn't sound like vacuum cleaners...

True. Hopefully they'll sound much quieter over the next few years. You can already hear the tyres working on the asphalt so that's better than it used to be.

Sky:

'Mercedes made an ominously fast start to F1 2017 on the first day of pre-season testing at Barcelona.'

Despite Ferrari only being .113 behind on the slower tyre.

If anything, I'd say the Ferrari pace was ominously fast

1:21.765 - Ham (Soft)
1:21.878 - Vet (Med)

Might be wrong but last year when they stayed on the mediums for most of the test, weren't sky saying the rest of the field needs to watch Mercedes as they were quick without the softs?

Almost tempted to say it's typical Sky

It's more of a TV issue, and there's talk that Liberty will be working to bring more of the sound to television.

Having seen the current generation on track, I can say that the engines sounds different from one another and generally sound good in person.

Unfortunately, we're all going to watch the majority of races on TV, so it needs to be worked out.

My memory of the V8 era was that they all more or less sounded the same, I would say that's a more recent thing. Even in the V10 era to some extent. That, or if there are differences, they've not picked up by TV very well. (I've never seen these cars live, I can't attest to that.)

The thing I don't like about these engines is that they sound dead. The fact that they're V6s aren't the problem, there are good sounding turbo V6s in the world (hell, Indycars sound pretty good). Whether it's the turbos or the relatively short rev band with the 8 speed box, they just sound... I don't know... bland. Maybe just too refined, almost...? I don't know, maybe I'm just spoiled with sports car racing where almost everything sounds great and different.

It's typical journos blabbering. When I fired up the Autosport live blog today, they said that Bottas coming out within 5 minutes and setting a 1:33 (yes, you read that right, 1:33) was an ominous sign. Apparently everything that Mercedes does is ominous. Car launch? Ominous. Fastest in testing? Ominous. Slowest in testing? Ominous. Toto farts in the garage? Ominous. It's like they learned a new word and try to sound smart by using it.

I get they need to drum up interest but you are right, it is ridiculous, we get they are world champions and until the first race, the team to beat. But come on, the pace of Ferrari might actually be there or thereabouts, talk about that and drum up interest that way.

You do have a point here @Liquid. The differences between engines are very clear. However I do believe there are small differences in the V6 engines, but you need a trained ear to pick each one out. The Honda engine can be picked out with ease though, but then again, hearing the cars in real life isn't quite the same as on a TV or computer.

To be honest I'm warming to the sound of the V6's. Sure they're no V10's but they don't sound terrible anymore, and I like the crackling and rumbling the engines produce on the overrun. That's why the Honda was one of the best sounding due to its unique sound.

Either way if my vacuum/tractor sounding like the current V6's I'd be very impressed .

Most people are, Mercedes aren't and dont plan to, they say the other stuff they do is better than running such a serious rake, that's why they have a higher ride height than many.
