That's it! The season is over!

How they fared:

1. Will Smith: Ran an excellent race. Even with the ultra-early pit stop, and the little scuffle with Max, he still had enough pace to stay up front. And nobody noticed it wasn't Lewis driving. Great end to the year. Donuts for everyone.

2. Sebastian Vettel: Gifted second by Bottas. Ends the race as he ends the season. Maybe next year, Seb.

3. Max Verstappen: Erh, saved his grip for post-race donuts? Excellent run up to third from way back, as expected. Let's see what kind of car Red Bull gives him next year.

4. Daniel Ricciardo: We're gonna miss you mate.

11. Fernando Alonso: Gets an honor guard send off, with Lewis and Seb escorting him on the cool down lap. They all get donuts together. It's abso****inglutely glorious.

DNF: Kimi Raikkonen: It would have been nice seeing both former champions getting the cool-down lap send-off. Ah well.

That's all that matters, all who matter. Everyone else is a midfielder or backmarker. Signing out.

What happened?

WHY THE **** DOES ALONSO GET A PENALTY AND BOTTAS NOT FOR EXACTLY THE SAME MISTAKE!?!?!

Alonso didn't lift.

Bottas slowed down after his gaffe to ensure he didn't get penalized.

Alonso kept his foot down and gained on Magnussen.

Well what a season it has been. The fight for 5 was really on until the mid-point when Lewis just found something extra and never looked back.
His most dominant championship win and the best form he's ever been in. I'm not sure there would be anyone who could have beaten him this year.

Final championship standings between Raikkonen (251), Verstappen (249) and Bottas (247) was really close. Verstappen made one hell of a comeback in the second half of the season (after his horrible start).

Although nobody will question the role of the halo, Hulk's crash is a serious question mark had the car caught fire and he wasn't able to get out!
Marshals were there to put the fire out. If it was desperate to get Nico out, the car would have been rolled over faster to get him out.

As I said before, this accident, and one like the Hartley Stroll accident in Canada are ones where the Halo is slightly worse, but overall, it's been a success.

Also, it's had no effect on the racing, so why does it matter?

Good race, great season! Especially the first part of the season.

All good observations.

My overwhelming impression of F1 for 2018 will be the "Big Three" aspect - three top teams totally dominating the top 6 positions in the racing. I see very little prospect of that changing for 2019.

I mostly agree but there did seem to be a relatively long wait for extinguishers. We've seen (very rarely) cars go up in flames very quickly in the past. If that had happened today then the incident would have been (obviously) much worse.

The bigger the fire, the faster you move. I've had enough experience of that to know that you could beat Usain Bolt if there's a big column of flame engulfing a car

This was the first season to have fewer drivers than races.

Bottas, what an awful way to end the season. I feel like he had some moments at the start of the year when he looked like he could be building up to the real deal, only for him to loose it. Russia was a highlight for him but it was too late for it to be his. He's going to have to put together an almighty season next year to fend off Ocon.

Have to say the send off Lews, Seb and Fernando did at the end was one of the best ways to end a season I've seen in a while.

When was the last time you saw a car go up in flames, that wasn't refueling related? They tend not to do that these days.

I also think the halo wasn't an issue here. With the angle of the car, Nico said he had the ground in one direction and the barrier in the other.

Australia this year (Raikkonnen, airbox). I accept it's a very rare event (as I said), the driver's biggest post-crash enemy remains fire (because everything else has already gone wrong). I'd just have been heartened to see fire marshalls there a little more quickly.

I agree that I don't think the halo was an issue - not sure if that was part of the reply to me or a general point.

Even David Croft sounded bored when Hamilton crosses the line to win.

My boy Alonso retires. A sad day just for me personally as a viewer. He's had a hell of a career, he's an outstanding driver and those doughnuts were awesome.
