Didn't know that started, there has only been two fixtures played so far weirdly.

Scottish Premier League started last weekend.

Are we ignoring the EFL Cup? We've already been knocked out of that by Huddersfield.
Nothing like a strong start to a new season to get the fans behind you.

And that was certainly nothing like a strong start. Though we did draw 0-0 with a team a league above us, even if it was only Huddersfield - we drew 0-0 at home with them last year and lost 2-0 away, so we are at least no worse.

Bear in mind, Messi wears the number 10 shirt, City have just signed Grealish and given him the number 10 shirt and Guardiola has distanced the club from a deal for Messi today.
I thought the number 10 shirt was a big deal on a football team reserved for your best player or one of the longtime players for the club, Kane #10 at Spurs etc. In other words the number 10 is something you earn. Although Pulisic is number 10 at Chelsea and he hasn't been there that long so I might not have it right. Just thought it was strange for Grealish to get the number 10 straight away.

C.Ronaldo got ManU’s #7 as an unproven 18 year old. The manager and player decides.

It varies from player to player and club to club. A player like Ronaldo will always wear number 7 wherever he goes, it's in his contract and it's part of his brand, CR7. Typically it's decided when the player signs for the club, and if it's a player whose squad number is tied into a brand and/or they are a big enough player, they can make getting that number a non-negotiable part of their contract.

If you go back far enough players didn't have numbers, then they had numbers assigned to them on the match day, their number shcanges game by game, and then they got fixed numbers that tended to represent where they played on the pitch. These days there's still some element of that (low numbers in defence, higher numbers in attack, mid-numbers in midfield etc.) but there are more players who tie thier number into their image and regardless of where they play and who they play for, that will be there number in most circumstances.

It doesn't always happen though, and apparently one of the things that held up the official announcement for Sancho was the number 7 shirt, Sancho's agent asked for it but Cavani has it. And fair play to Solksjaer if it's true, he said no, he won't ask Cavani to give up that number, Sancho can have it next year when Cavani leaves. They eventually agreed. Might not be true, but that's something that circulated for a while and I fully expect Sancho to get the number 7 in a years time regardless.

Apparently PSG have agreed terms with Messi this eveninng.

Thanks for the explanation. It's the same with American NFL players as some have their number as part of their brand. Tom Brady has the whole TB12 thing. Before this year you could look at an NFL roster and tell where a player played strictly by his number, quarterbacks & kickers could be any number 1-19 with most kickers choosing to be single digits. Wide receivers were in the 80's but could also be 10-19, lineman were 50-70 or in the 90's, linebackers were typically in the 50's or 40's and cornerbacks and safeties were 20-40's.

College players haven't had those number restrictions for decades now. You could have a big 285lb defensive end wearing #5 and most offensive players loved those low numbers. But this year the NFL has adopted the same numbering policy that colleges have had. Last night there was a rookie linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys wearing #11 because that's what he wore in college. It's going to be very strange this year looking at all of these numbers on position players that couldn't wear them before.

Messi deal at PSG almost done, two years with an option for a third, £25 million a year after tax (!!)

He will wear the number 19 shirt. Deal is expected to be announced in the next few days, Neymar has pushed for the move apparently.

Been a bit of a mad week!

This is... so weird. Over the summer we've signed:

Jaden Brown, Free, Huddersfield
Dennis Adeniran, Free, Everton
Olamide Shodipo, Loan, QPR
Jack Hunt, Free, Bristol City
Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Loan, Burnley
Lewis Wing, Loan, Middlesbrough
Florian Kamberi, Loan, St. Gallen
Theo Corbeanu, Loan, Wolves
Marvin Johnson, Free, Middlesbrough/Free Agent
George Byers, Undisclosed, Swansea City
Lee Gregory, Undisclosed, Stoke City

We'd not have gone down with that lot in the squad. The Chancer really does seem to be going hands-off at last and letting Moore get on with it. I wouldn't be surprised if we announced Messi tomorrow.

I do not like optimism at Hillsborough. Not one bit.
One more: Lewis Gibson, Loan, Everton.

Not sure if it's in time to start today (though the BBC thinks we're starting our league season next week at home to Doncaster, we're starting our league season today away at Charlton, but that's the quality of the national broadcaster for you), but that's literally an entire first XI we've signed, plus one sub.

Leicester 1-0 Man City.

Iheanacho penalty just two minutes from time wins the Community Shield for Leicester, I didn't see the game as I have just got in from work but looking at the stats to looked fairly even. Grealish was on the bench for City and came on in the 65th minute. Leicester had a lot more of their fans at the game than City did.

Elsewhere Chelsea's deal to sign Lukaku is very close, it will be a club record £97.5 million, this Summer transfer window has been mad!

It also looks like it wont be the only Inter Milan playing to be leaving the club as reports suggest that the financial situation there is worse than first feared and that they are heading towards liquidation.

That's one hell of a Faustian pact.

Arsenal's Joe Willock to Newcastle has been agreed, £25 million. It'll be Newcastle's first signing of the window.

Speaking of Arsenal, they had a friendly away to Spurs today and when Saka came off the bench the Spurs fans actually applauded him, obviously in solidarity for when he had that horrific abuse he suffered after the Euros, probably the one and only time Spurs fans will applaud and Arsenal player.

Messi had a press conference at Barca were he said goodbye and he was in tears, PSG have offered him a contract.

Ligue 1 now has the greatest footballer of all time.

Average level has been raised from farming level to top quality.

What is your definition of top quality? (I’m assuming you’re referencing the league and not just PSG.)

Does this mean that La Liga is now farming level?

Imagine being a €200million signing and still being the third best striker in your team 🤣

Oh noes. I've been getting paid a couple of million quid a week for years and now the love of my life can't afford to pay me anymore so I'll have to move on to some hussy that'll pay me more millions a week so that I can survive.

Cry me a ****ing river you greedy ****.

There's a Premier League table predictor on the BBC for anyone who wants to give it a go.

On This Day 10 Years Ago:

Wrexham faced expulsion from the Conference over non-payments on the eve of the new season. Fans raised £127,000 in less than 24 hours to save the club and ensure it was able to meet its commitments. People put up the deeds to their houses to contribute to this, it was that meaningful. This was just a few seasons after a high court case over liquidation, the first-ever points deduction for entering administration and two different groups of asset strippers.

So I'll take us having Hollywood owners right now. What goes around has already come around for us.

I'm looking forward to see how involved R.R. McReynolds will be at Wrexham. So far, they have brought in a very experienced manager and gotten some pretty lucrative sponsors.

The playing recruitement has also been very good. The ball started rolling with Paul Mullin, last year's League Two top scorer (32 goals) and Player Of The Year. He won promotion with Cambridge to League One but has accepted a deal at Wrexham instead.

Is there more money involved? Absolutely. But for the players themselves, they're selling their labour and a three-year deal is far more personal security than a one-year. Over a period of 5 consecutive seasons we actually lost our top goalscorer each summer so it's nice to be able to attract players in rather than watching them leave.

You've got Sancho, and I feel like Euro 2020 could be seen as a coming-of-age performance for Maguire, where he actually looked like an £80million defender. Unless City get Messi or Kane, I feel like they'll finally get caught out again for not having a proper striker, like Spain at the Euros.

I'd love to believe Liverpool can win, but there's been nothing of note in the transfer window, so I have to hope VVD's full season return can inspire us.

I'm pleased with Sancho and Varane, but I'm really hoping we bring in a decent defensive mid, someone with a better first touch than Fred. Matich is our best defensive midfielder in my opinion, but he's not that quick and the way he's been used in the last season suggests he can't play more than one game every week, so once the season get's going properly he'll need resting.

I think the fee we paid for Maguire was always going to be hard to live up to, had we paid £50m I think people would have said, "yeah, he's worth about that". He does look more sure lately though, he played well last season and thne very well at the Euro's, he's looked good in pre-season too. We are also looking forward to partnering him with Varane, so it'll be great to see how they work together. Hopefully very well.

We're closing the gap, I don't think Grealish makes City a significanltly more formidable prospect than they were last season, he's a quality player but he's also competing in the area of th epitch City are strongest, attacking midfielders. If you take grealish out and put Mahrez in, City iwll play much the same IMO. They really needed an Aguero replacement, but it's not looking likely right now.

Liverpool signed Konate, who I think is a quality defender, I don't expect Liverpool to get as many injuries this season as last, hopefully Van Dijk doesn't start picking up injuies in that knee, at his best he's arguably the best defender in the world and he was massively missed last season. Big players do get injured from time to time, but Liverpool had a lot of other injuries in addition. I've seen it happen to United where you end up missing several first team regulars for a while, it's not nice, Liverpool had an extreme season for that.

I have heard that Liverpool are expecting to sign someone else, I've also heard United are expected to sign one more player before the end of the season, but really we need to offload a couple of players. We probably have the biggest senior squad in the league, it's a very good squad, I don't think it's the best, but it's probably the biggest and there are a couple of senior players earning between £30k-£135k per week who I can't see getting much game time at all, perhaps not even making the bench.

I'll second that and say that whilst we have had a great window so far we are still one or two short to perhaps win the title, we do maybe need a DM and perhaps a striker but the squad really looks stronger than last season. We will be closer than last season.

Sancho trained for the first time at United today and looks to play at least a part against Leeds on Saturday, Varane in now in Manchester and is staying in a house owned by the club with his family whilst he quarantines (Van De Beek and Cavani have previously stayed there when they were new signings), only a medical is needed really for the deal to be complete, he could also play on Saturday if all goes well.

Just need 2 more signings.
  • a CDM
  • Pep Guardiola
I think this season is the real test for Ole, really it is his team now. He bought Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Varane and Telles (but plays Shaw becuase he's better). He bought James, Van de Beek, Bruno, Sancho and Cavani, 7 of those players are what I expect to be regular starting 11 players Ole has brought. It's his team now, and he needs to mount a proper title challenge.

He doesn't need to win, winning it is never a guarantee, there are several top, top teams in the Premier League and only one can win. He doesn't even need to finish second really, but we can't be out of the title race by the new year.

So I think this is the make or break season for Ole. I'm not Ole out, I like what he's done for the most part so far, he's bought well, he's got top 4 two years running, but this is the season I want to see us start to dominate games more and not fall off the leaders early on. This is the season where I think we'll really find out if Ole can be good enough or likely never will be.

A new contract and good backing in this window means Ole has no excuses.

I agree that this is make or break for Ole. It’s an illusion to think last year was progress. Liverpool was not at full strength. We didn’t go for it at Anfield when they were for the taking, and we couldn’t beat them at home when it mattered. Losing in the EL final against a beatable Villarreal is not progress. Candidly I was Ole out after his first year. He was not his own man. Calling everyone “son” like Fergie did. I didn’t see a vision on the pitch and he couldn’t communicate it to the media. Please don’t tell me it’s a language barrier because I can clearly understand Pep.

But I digress. Looking forward to the league kicking off this weekend. It will be interesting to see what Tuchel does in his first full season in charge. Will Liverpool bounce back? Will Tottenham... wait, nevermind... they’ll be Spursy.

The Beeb are reporting (guessing) that Messi has signed a 2 year deal at PSG, subject to a medical.

Who is going to be the doctor to fail a player like Messi? Can you imagine if the guy walks out and says he failed the medical, we can't have Messi.
