Got off work this morning, went to go ride because I have a big race coming up in Mexico in a month....and I need practice! Lots of practice!!

Jammed home from riding with @Tidgney and @kie25 streams playing in the background trying to pick up any last minute race details. Been watching a lot of Kie's and Tidgney's streams the past couple days trying to figure out how they can manhandle that Gr.3 Ferrari around the track. I put in lots of laps and was finally able to hot lap around the circuit in the consistent low 52's. Good for me. I make it home with 5 minutes to spare for the final Euro slot (keep in mind I live in Commiefornia). Ran a few laps of practice and I was still able to lap in the low 52's. Perfect.

Lobby loads up and I'm amazed at what I see. I'm in a lobby that ranges from A/A all the way to D/A rating. I guess all those Monza range-quits this week caught up to me :banghead:. Qualifying came and went.... couldn't get a clean lap to save my life. Too many people getting in the way. Managed a mid 53 and 5th place on the grid or something like that. Green flag waves and I get punted right away. Followed by a pit maneuver to finish it off. Last place. I spin some laps...get positions back. But its not meant to be. Guy's are getting in the way and I'm making lots of mistakes. I'm doing my best to drive the 458....but its biting back HARD!! I rage quit at lap 10 . I don't even know why I try with this car. Its so damn hard to drive...

N/A SLOT 1, Door 12, qualified 19th, A/S lobby.

In deep need of some redemption and an ego boost, I dust off my N/A alt and the Scooby for some action. I practice for 10 minutes and I start being able to consistently hit the high 51's. I don't even know why I keep trying with the Gr.3 Ferrari......

I'm my own worst enemy during qualifying and I end up DFL. Well, just ahead of someone who didn't bother going out. Green flag flies and I get a bunch of positions right off the bat. I come into the first corner and keep it as tight as possible to avoid a punt. IT DOESN'T WORK. Once again I get punted, followed by a pit maneuver on the exit of turn 1 and I'm now firmly in 20th place by a long shot.

Tempted to rage-quit, I press on. I actually drive quite well but this is an A lobby. The best I can manage is an 11th place. Not bad considering I had to make up a 10 second gap right off the bat and pass a bunch of dudes. I'll take it

N/A slot 2. Door 10, Qualified 11, A/S lobby

Obviously I wanted another shot after the last 2 messes. I got some ok qually laps in. Nothing perfect. But nothing bad. Here's a picture of the qualifying results. Tight lobby...

..... Lights go out, and my only mission is to survive the first turn. I do... barely....but I make it. First lap is utter chaos and I pick up 3 positions as people yard-sale. Second lap I make a genuine overtake out of the last corner. 3rd lap a couple more guys wreck each other. 5th lap.... I find myself in 4th behind a GTR. We start helping each other out to catch the leaders. He bobbles, I slip by. And he starts to bump me down the home stretch to gain on the leaders. It's working. I make a bobble around lap 12, he re-passes me and I file in behind him. However, it becomes apparent that his pace is falling off. I keep an eye on the time splits and see that 5th is slowly gaining on us. I stick with him for another lap and duck into the pits at lap 15 as he's starting to hold me up. Next lap him and the Mazda that inherited 4th position go in.

Lap 16, I come into the braking zone of turn 1 just as they're exiting the pits nose-to-tail. I make it in front but the Nissan loops out on the exit as he gives it a handful of throttle on cold tires. The Mazda gets starts chipping away at my lead over him, but never quite gets into striking range. Lap 20 and 21 He's on my rear bumper and I have to defend going into turn 1. I flash my hazards at him on the exit of the last turn indicating that I want to work together....as first and second are only 1.5 seconds up the road and battling hard. The Mazda driver either doesn't get the signal, doesn't know the signal.... or doesn't care about the signal. He dive bombs me going into the first turn as I take a nice arc into he apex. I notice it last at the last second and hit the brakes so I don't get punted. I should have saw that coming. I guess not everyone watches the fast player's streams and take notice of how they work together....sigh.

I bump draft him down the home straight and he still doesn't get it. He defends going into the first turn. I get the jump out of T1 and I have the inside on the second apex of the uphill esses. He doesn't back off and I get ran into the inside wall. Thank god we had a sizable gap over 5th. He goes on to finish 3rd...10 seconds back from 1st and second. I finish a distant 4th.

What could have been...

IMG_0868.jpg

I think of going again but I decide to count my blessings and stick with this score.

Side note: In every lobby I entered this afternoon, Ferrari's were in the top 3. All of them finished out of the money...usually buried deep in the pack. I guess I'm not the only one that struggles with that car. Seems to be an "alien's only" whip

2021 FIA Manufacturer Exhibition Season R3
Sardegna CII
BMW M6
Lobby A+/S
Door #20

Slot 1 - Lobby opens up and Whoah, door 20 and its all A+. Hmmm.. not the lobby I needed in the BMW M6. Its okay around the track but definitely not OP to give me an advantage as the lowest ranked driver in the lobby. So, I just tried to breath and put in a quick time. My quickest in time trial was a 51.8xx... I went for it and landed a 52.0xx. That put me in p7...then 8...then 9...then 11... and finally 12. Tied for 11 officially but the other guy got P11.

Race started and grabbed a few spots in turn 1. Then lost a few spots after pitting lap 14. Then gained a few spots due to penalties. The only place I could really figure out the pass was turn 1. So, not super exciting to drive/race, but it required concentration and consistency to do well. Finished further up than I started in p9, grabbed 190 points, and about 250 DR. I thought that was pretty good for my skill level, so I banked it.

I came across a beautiful example of revenge in Manufacturers:

A hyper-aggressive Aston driver get two corners wrong in a row, allowing a Supra to get alongside and have the inside line into the final complex. Aston tried turning in on the Supra anyway, failed, then intentionally barged past the Supra by hitting his right rear into turn 1 and forcing him to countersteer. Supra served the Aston a taste of his own medicine at the final corner and sent him down to 18th, which became 16th after penalties were applied.

That guy in the Aston is terrible. Does this every race, just pushes cars out of the way in the most vulnerable turns. If I find myself in close quarters I give him zero benefit of the doubt.

The move from the Supra at the final turn was A+ though.

Rather uneventful considering how much work I put into it and how good my pace was in practice.

I couldn't hole shot the Supra to save my life and my grid start needs serious work. Even if I qualified high I got pushed off T1 every damn race.

Last slot of the night I qualified P2 at .001 behind P1. Lol... Pushed outside on T1, fell back to 16.

Catch the pack and keep patient taking opportunities when I can. After a few overtakes and some pit cycling I was actually in first but pitted back into traffic at lap 16 in 9th.

Once again chasing the pack being held up while people catch us instead of working together. Guys trying to go two wide with me before the right hander. Blah blah.

I did accidentally push an early brake guy in the last turn and he called me out in the lobby but he kind of deserved it since he was bumping me earlier on the lap.

Made my way to 6th on the final lap and over took a skittish Porsche on the final turn even with him trying to push me off as I passed to finish 5th and a fastest lap.

All in all I finished the night with 2 P5's and two fastest laps and I'm ok with it as a rookie in A/S lobbies.

Missed this round. Zero practice and busy work/home schedule meant I didn't have the time to get stuck in. Hoping to get back in for Nurburgring though, don't want to miss that!
Me, too whilst I like the normal layout of this track I really struggle with the Reverse. So I gave this one a miss - but I'll be back for the 'Ring which hopefully the Viper should be quite strong at....

It's a miracle I didn't finish last in this meme car in top split Americas.
I went for the 9000 IQ strategy of pitting at the end of lap 1 (no tire change) to avoid the shenanigans. At one point, I was 8th (or around there), but due to the eventual tire wear slowing me down and the Z4 being... well... slow, I had to let some cars pass by, as fighting them was a death sentence for me.

Still hilarious that the 1-29 strategy kinda worked. 😂

Awesome :P
Where did you qualify?

Did a sneaky little custom race using the Nations cup settings for this week.

Is it just me or is this both a fuel and tyre management race? I think the softs are falling off a cliff around lap 7 and I’m only getting about 19 laps from a tank without using the overtake button.

Could be a war of attrition in lots of different ways…

Pretty much yes, and yes.
So far, I've noticed that only doing the shortshifting from (just before) turn 6 to turn 10 was enough to not have to refuel, but this was done without using Overtake.

If you want to see how I did at Autopolis it's in the IOTW video on YouTube where I finish in p11 inspite if another drivers effort to get the spot

At Sardegna it was a strange experience.
I did ok in practice a few days before but on race day I couldn't get a single lap right.
I qualified as P14 with door #14, well below my FP time. The standing start was great for me as I was p7 after T1. Then I slammed the wall in the top of the esses and had to wait for a safe rejoin. I was now P18.
In reality the race was now over for me

That realization made me relax and I recovered pretty OK
Did my pit on lap 10 and got new shoes at the same time
In the end I was pleased with the result.

Went out for some practice laps of the Nordschliefe last night in the Viper. I was feeling inspired after seeing two Vipers in the top 10 times (not that I'm likely to challenge for a top 10 time!), one of those being fourth. Not many on my friends list had run Q laps - in fact only one Aston Martin - so I didn't have much to compare to. First lap was fairly terrible after the karussel, ended up with a 7:28. Ran straight into a second lap and got that down to 7:25 but it was also fairly terrible. My target was 7:15, so I carried on for a third lap and kept things together for a change, and managed a 7:14. I normally wouldn't be happy with a time 14 seconds off the pace of the top 10, but it's the Nordschliefe, so...

I then went and finished up the liveries for my alt account where I'm running with Lexus. I chose the prototype GT3, but did all three cars in the editor anyway.

EDIT: Just checked GTBlade and I'm currently ranked 400th for my FIA time! I know it's early in the day and all that, but that's got to be the highest I've ever ranked. Definitely NEED to make it to this race, and make the race work...

The Alien times for the Nordschliefe are just ridiculous. I am just outside the Asian top 100 and the gap to fastest is 12 seconds! If I hook up an entire lap I think I can maybe get within 10 seconds. I am really hoping the Cayman’s fuel/tyre economy will come to the fore.

I think by the time the race rolls around I'll be a good 20s off the alien pace, unless I can make some vast improvements - but my lap was pretty tidy and I can't see more than about 3s in it with my skill level!

What kinda times are you doing in the Cayman? Should be good on tyres for sure. I've not spent a huge amount of time in the Viper Gr.4 so not sure on it's tyre/fuel use.

My current best is a 7:10.xxx. I think my optimal is a mid 7:08. Best in Asia is a 6:58.

The Cayman is usually good with tyres and fuel, but it lacks some top end due to the ludicrous gearing. This will make it vulnerable in the overtaking zones. If I can get in slipstream on the straights it will help a lot.

Looking forward to the 'Ring this weekend... hadn't realized that was next on the schedule until today.

As for Sardegna... was a disaster.

My mind and heart weren't into it from the start, messed up qualifying (and in part was ruined by a jerk shoving me off in that tricky right-hander... more to come on that) and started almost last.

But had a great start, worked up to 12th within a lap and a half. Kept the TCS on and saw that my tire wear was great so decided on a no-stopper, thinking a top-10 in the circumstances was a good day.

Instead, though, I made a mistake, pushing it a bit too hard in 'that' right-hander, and lost it on the exit curbs... ruining my position. Mea culpa, racing too hard against those around me instead of 'running my own race'. I'll never learn. The time to get going again amounted to my 'pit stop' time, so now it was about hanging on to a mid-pack finish, maybe 10th if i was lucky.

Then, as I was trying to manage that, of course I was shoved off in 'that' turn again at least twice, by people who don't understand that giving up a tenth on the way in to that turn yields two tenths coming off it. Was so frustrated by the whole thing.

I did inadvertently smash an Alfa into T1, which didn't completely ruin his race, and as much as I was sorry, I was also 'not sorry' as he had been using his chrome horn on that right-hander in the prior two laps... I just managed to avoid being binned by them in those cases but they cost me time for sure, and I would have gladly let him past at an appropriate spot where we both wouldn't lose time, if he was a better sport.

Limped home to the last running spot and called it a night. Not even worth playing again on the alts, a terrible combo and the usual unsporting people. That's two awful results in a row, this one 60/40 on me for my mistake, and letting things go downhill from there, but dissatisfying all the same.

Quick, late, and brief update, mainly because it wasn't very good!

For Manufacturers I entered the second slot on Wednesday, which turned out to be a second split that I barely crept into as door #18.

Thinking I'd get a tow for qualy I headed around the out lap near the front of the queue, then everyone slowed right before the final corner, this just isn't my thing playing these games where you're all nose to tail so I went around on my own and put in a solid 51.7 - which held up ok until people got their third and fourth lucky dips completed and I was to start the race in 15th

The Ferrari is nothing if not good off the line and a tremendous launch saw my first bad decision of the race when I elected to go outside the car ahead rather than down the middle of the track and everything I'd gained off the line had been lost by T1. The next bad decision came at the end of L1, I knew I could try a no tyre change run if I was low down but for some reason felt I'd be better staying out until around L9 then trying to pull a slightly early one with a tyre change.

Trying to follow the more normal strategy, the Supra ahead pitted the following lap, then the cars ahead of him on the subsequent laps, any idea of a 3-4 lap undercut was quashed and I was left in 15th chasing a Supra. Caught and passed him, another car spun off on the exit of the right at the top of the hill and despite closing in on a group ahead, I came home 13th for 183 points. Real life getting in the way of a second attempt, so that was that.

Watching the replay and judging the lap times, had I pitted L1 and not changed tyres, I would have gained around 6s on track over the first few laps plus the time from not changing the tyres, putting me around 10s further up the road than I was on L10, and in all likelihood securing a top ten finish, never mind!

Now a gripe. Turning tyre wear off for qualy has made it a farce. Previously, people would have a choice and some would try for a tow, not hook it up or trip over each other and then have a slight tyre disadvantage for their second run. Now, mess it up? No worries, off you go again on your perfect tyres. This was extremely evident at Sardegna where people in the train just kept on going until they lucked into a strong lap with a slipstream (and if they didn't, try again next slot). If they're going to turn tyre wear off, then a track like Sardegna C should be no more than two minutes qualifying, so people realistically have a single shot at it. Nordschleife will be better because of the length of the track, but they need to fix qualifying, even when we had fuel on it wasn't this broken. I much prefer having all cars on track but I'd take giving you time with no other cars on track to get your grid slot over the current mess

What’s the strategy for next weeks manu? Been hot lapping Nurburgring to get familiar with the course as I’ve dedicated ZERO time to it the past 3 years. I try to log into the practice lobbies but keep getting disco’d every time. What gives??

Mandatory one stop, and it's a fuel saving race.
Depending on the car and situation, you may need to either splash and dash, or camp under someone's slipstream to do a stop-and-go. Tire wear not too much of an issue.

copy, thanks for the response.

Any nerds out there know why I’m getting disco’d from the lobby’s? I have zero issues in the daily races

Well. Ran to have a go in the Super Formula at interlagos. I didn't have great 1 lap speed but felt I really had my laps smoothed out of maxing tire wear. Got in as door 9 and qualified p10. After a messy turn 1 to 4 because of close quarters things settled down.

I ended up holding around p10 until people started pitting. The front runners had fallen back to the pack. And it was a draft train from p2 to p9. I pitted end of lap 9 for softs and set out to run to the end. Ended up working past some people as they pit late. Then manage to make some hard fought passes to work my way to p5 at the start of lap 19. Promptly get slightly tapped into turn 4 pushing me wide for a 0.5 and making me fall back to the clutches of the chasing pack. Promptly have several wild dives made and it turns into a bumper pack of a brawl. Serve my penalty on lap 20 and drop to p12. Guy who decided to send it 3 wide in one of the 90 degree infield turns gets spun by a returned favor from someone else and I manage to squeeze home p11.

Typical. Messy, great promise near the end of the race but falling back drastically. Not too bad though.

Best of luck to you all. This one is messy but good chances as people spin a bit.

Went Slot 1, and ended up in the top split for the first time ever! Well, aside from some very bare top splits in later timeslots last year.

Expected to be absolutely demolished, but surprisingly I did really well. Qualified 16th out of 19, and made it up to 13th in the first stint. Then I got undercut in the pits, dropping back to 15th behind the two guys I'd been defending from. With fresher tyres, though, I clawed back some ground and had an awesome last lap battle for 12th:

Only finished 14th in the end, but that was miles better than I expected. Felt great to be fighting with some of the top split guys.

Hopefully I can keep making it into top split. Despite the low points it was an awesome race!

Bit of a whinge

Went away and played a fair bit of PC2 and ACC, came back to GTS recently and gee whiz. I always had the opinion that GTS isn't perfect physics-wise but its the game that's good, not anymore after today. Was looking forward to this race as Interlagos shines with high downforce cars that can actually attack its bends, rather than the usual Gr. 3 understeer-fest.

Caught in mid-pack feacal flinging as I'm rusty so Q put me there. God awful collision detection, so biff and barge all over the place. Usually don't mind but if it's keeping packs of dudes that are a between 5-9 tenths a lap slower than me in clean in front of me and ruining my race, it just sucks and almost feels unjust. Couple that with the games binary way of simulating wheelspin (i.e. if it's not 100% traction you're a beyblade) makes me think I didn't realise how bad it was because I got used to it.

What disappoints me most is GTS used to throw some interesting combinations, and interesting parameters. Some races could be done in different ways. A slow car could theoretically beat a faster car through car and pit management and vice versa. Now, like today's FIA, its all 'choose one of 2 tyre choices, pit 50% of the way though for the other and ya done'.

Tl;Dr: I'm checking out of GTS. This game isn't fun anymore.

Well that went alright, biffed my qualifying laps to start P8 so used the mediums first. Managed to get up to 4th with them and dispte a small error that cost me a few seconds and places dropped me to 6th. Stopped on lap 10 and worked my up to 5th again before the end of the race. Had the possibility for a podium there but I'm taking my result and running. As always I love driving this car and it was a joy to drive here dispite PDs high multiplers.
