So it looks like Trump is trying to get out ahead of my A Strand by launching the first salvo before the midterms. This is going to get real nasty after the Tuesday.

Either way, it appears (at least at this point) that Strand B is out of the question - which makes me think that DeSantis will be the next US President in 2024. DeSantis would crush Biden.
Republican Party is going to be too busy fighting itself they won't notice/do anything to prevent the Democrats from winning. Fear not though! The Democrats will commit own goals to make the 2024 election between someone who is too old and someone who represents nobody.

I think DeSantis would win all the expected states but is such a divisive moron that it would drive minorities and young people to the polls in droves. All of his nonsense would be exposed on the internet, he would likely not tone down his rhetoric at all, there would be infighting between himself and Trump and people on both sides would say idiotic things (that Trumpians love but reasonable people would scoff at). Maybe he could beat Biden but that would be Biden's failure, not DeSantis's success. I think DeSantis would not be as successful as Trump because he's just as dumb but less authentic.

I don't think DeSantis is as dumb as Trump, not by a long stretch of the imagination - not that that's a particularly high ceiling to reach. I think he's much better tactically, less child-like and reactionary. His problem is that he's trying to appeal to the Trump base by emulating him too much instead of being his own man.

Agree on this. DeSantis is not dumb. He's more strategic than Trump is. Still, he probably won't be able to get much done if there is a split in Congress/House.

He seems... upset.

In a lengthy statement on Thursday night, Mr Trump dismissed the Florida governor as a political lightweight who had come to him "in desperate shape" when running for his first term in office in 2017.
"Ron had low approval, bad polls, and no money, but he said that if I would Endorse [sic] him, he could win," Mr Trump said. "I also fixed his campaign, which had completely fallen apart."
He went on to complain that Mr DeSantis - whom he is nicknaming "Ron DeSanctimonious" - was "playing games" by refusing to rule out a presidential bid.

"Well, in terms of loyalty and class, that's really not the right answer," Mr Trump added.

That's Donald J. Trump all right - the loyalty and class President. 🤭

Trump seems to be under the impression that making cringeworthy nicknames and half-assedly slandering DeSantis will have the exact same effect as when he did so to Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, etc, but he couldn't be more wrong. DeSantis isn't a RINO, or really hate-able at all for most Republicans; if anything he's just as well liked as Trump by most of them. This will only make Trump appear more feeble and desperate, and really, the loser. Based on most reactions, it does seem that many Republican voters are more than willing to choose DeSantis over Trump, especially after the recent ad-homs. Though, given that DeSantis is just as Trumpian as Trump, representing the same proto-fascist, culture war/anti-degeneracy obsessed agenda, this is not to suggest that former Trump voters opting for DeSantis means the Trump cult is no longer a cult.

Honestly all DeSantis has to do in this situation is just give that classic, smug, ****-eating grin he always does...and Trump is done. No actual words needed.

Yes. I wasn't expecting any actual retort from Desantis. It will pay off for him to the bigger person and say nothing as Trump will go lower and lower.

I mean, it worked to get 74 million votes in 2020. I'm sure that everyone will have forgotten/forgiven Trump's misdeeds in 2024 so that he will now come out as a winner! If Trump runs, the only way that he can realistically win is if the Democrats run out Biden, Sanders or Clinton. Anyone else SHOULD be able to handily defeat him.

Denying the 2020 election worked to get 74 million votes in 2020?

I'm quite sure they'd have a really easy time of it, lol.

Meanwhile GOP central:

I could see them changing direction depending on which way the wind is blowing, but it's an uphill battle for Donald.

It really depends how the next two years ago. Trump is already facing an uphill battle but the only reason he won in 2016 was because the Democrats did not put out a great candidate. By 2020, Trump already showed his colors and it was still close. The Democrats are not landslide favorites and putting out a candidate who is potentially having great-grandchildren while in office may not be a move showing the party "in touch" with the younger generations.

But who would be a suitably uniting candidate for the progressive and neocon wings of the donkey party? I like the Michigan congresswoman lady Elissa Slotkin. She seems sane. Probably too sane to accept the nomination, though. I'm sure there are glitzier potential candidates around.

For the most part, she is. However, one drawback is that she was a spook, and there's a decent number of people who don't want anyone like that anywhere near the government. Past that, she's pretty moderate and doesn't have any glaring radial positions. The district she represents, Michigan's 8th, is the district I spent the majority of my life in and it's incredibly diverse all things considered. On one side you have the wealthy areas like Rochester, Lake Orion, and Oxford and on the other side, you have the working-class East Lansing. Then in between is a mix of rednecks, farmers, white supremacists, and preppers.

Honestly, I would likely vote for her if she was the nomination.

Thanks, I was going to tag you for some insight as I know you're an ex-Michigander.

I'm sure the America First brigade are waiting to brand her as radially biased but everyone else is getting tired of treading that route.
Here all week folks. Tip your waitress and don't forget to try the veal. b'dum tishh

A consistent refrain for conservatives over the last 30 odd years - whenever they lose an election - is that the Republican candidate was "not conservative enough". For those people a Trump/Lake ticket is just the ticket! There are a lot of people who live their lives in an airtight echo chamber - everyone they know thinks the same way as they do!

I can't see Biden running in 2024, but the success of the Democrats depends on three things: how the economy performs over the next two years, who the GOP candidate is ... and who the Democratic candidate is. There's no obvious person right now ... unless they can talk The Rock into making a run. 🤔

This reminds me of Hannity apparently, asking where this term, “Red Wave” was coming from in the last couple days. Followed immediately by a video showing him and all his Fox affiliates on the air talking about said wave.

I’ll have to see if I can find it.

It’s that another name for “The Bog of Eternal Stench”?
Right now I like to think it's The Slough Of Despond. Aside from, you know, actual Slough which fits the description to a tee.
