The future former guy running again sounds like it might not necessarily be as bad news for the Democrats as perhaps it first appears.

Biden running again on the other hand might be more worrying for them. I don't know how it works in the US but does a sitting president have to run unopposed or can other Dem candidates run against him? Just asking.

Yes, other Democrats can run against Biden for the 2024 Democratic nomination, and they likely will. However, if Biden runs again (and I see no reason why he wouldn’t), then he will almost assuredly win the nomination.

Thanks @Pop. The Repubs will definitely want to play up the youth vs maturity angle if DeSantis wins the nomination. Not so much if they inexplicably pick Trump again.

Ah, cool! Means the military will have to serve but gets no say on elections if they are deployed! Also means that any ambassador for the US that is out of the country cannot vote on elections. Hey, if we accidentally send Trump out of the country on Election Day, he can't vote either!

Executing drug sellers without a formal trial? People working in Walgreens must be feeling pretty nervous right now...

Meanwhile, security are having to turn people away at Trump's announcement speech. Unfortunately, they're actually inside the venue and trying to get out. As one commenter put it: "This isn't an announcement... this is a hostage crisis".

Trump is still Republican's top choice.

Seems like DeSantis is already doing pretty well, and the trend is in his favor. I'd guess that when the punches really start getting thrown, people decide that they can't win with Trump. Just a guess though.

Trump is still Republican's top choice.

Remember Trump "loves the uneducated" ... and "it's easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled". While most educated Republicans - AKA RHINOs - are dying to move away from Trump, the unwashed masses of the GOP base haven't got the memo yet. It's going to take a while to turn the MAGA ship around. It's going to be interesting to watch the next few months & see if pressure from the base - who still adore Trump - is enough to keep Trump on top.

Uneducated is a mindset. We need to find a better term. I'm not formally educated, terrible student, quit college, etc, yet I have a broad passion for learning and problem solving. I know plenty of people with thorough formal education who are dumb as a bag of hammers and couldn't change their oil or plot Mongolia on a map if their life depended on it. I've tried really hard to equate various character aspects to political party and I just can't figure it out. Typically I rely on one test - is this person an asshole or not? Often it's a pretty good gauge of political affiliation.

DeSantis is hardly moving away from Trump style politics though. It's like choosing between proctitis or a kidney stone trapped in the urethra.

I don't see 'uneducated' equated to having a formal education or not. It's more a willing to not want to learn and grow as a person. 'I finished schooling at 18 and everything i've learned since comes from the small group of people i live and work with and whatever news/media i nailed my colours to as a young adult - probably based on what my daddy subscribed to.'
