Unbelievable, we're dropping like flies!
I got my 40G PS3 a little over a year ago myself. This definitely has me worried too. Any word online, why so many PS3s are biting the bullet? Does Sony have any idea why this is happening to so many people? Have they made any revisions to newer systems, so it doesn't happen to one I might have to buy this year? Absolutely rediculous!
I'll be severely pissed off, if I have to buy another PS3, by the time GT5 FINALLY comes out. My original freakin' PS2 is STILL working, albeit not as well as new. I bought it as the GT3 package deal 7+ years ago, and I still play GT4 on it occationally (for the 'ring of course). If these PS3's keep crapping out, I wonder if there will be grounds for a class action lawsuit.
EDIT: After doing a little snooping/surfing online, on the subject, I found that many people have contacted Sony, and have had there problems resolved, with varying degrees of difficulty. Even if your PS3 is out of warranty, Sony has taken many back and repaired them, some even for free. Other have had to pay $150, which is bogus, but better than buying a new one. I've read that Sony's customer support response is unique for each case, but generally helpful. However, I wonder how willing they will be to help you out, during these tough economic times. I certainly hope I don't have to find out. Best of luck to all who's PS3 has already died.
Double EDIT: Just curious, does everybody in here have their PS3 plugged into a surge protector? You know, the same kind that you (are supposed to) plug your Desktop PC into? I had an extra older APC surge protector (no backup power though) that I've had my PS3 plugged into, since day 1. IMO, plugging your PS3 directly into the wall socket is like playing russian roulette.
