My first GV300 was an epic battle. I wanted to make it a close one - so I ran a Holden Monaro CV8 with the "$2K upgrade" + Sport Soft tyres only. It's got good power, but it's nowhere near the RX7s or NSXs that usually seem to dominate this event (according to this thread!).
A bad start (missed gear) put me in 12th at the first hairpin, but found it easy to get to & stay in middle of pack running 2.14s. Decided on lap 8 to push up to leaders, and with a few 2.10s got to front on lap 13. Spent 2 laps building a 10 second gap, but then the tyres were pretty much shot. I tried to stay out, but 2nd had caught me and was abut to pass (my times blew out to 2.20+), so pitted after 18 laps.
Going for more longevity, I put on Sports/Hard & took no fuel, hoping to hold on til lap 40ish. Unfortunately, I was also trying to maintain my entry & mid-corner speeds that I achieved with the soft tyres (realised my error here later in the race), and as they had a LOT less grip I tore them up in 12 laps, all the while managing only 2.15s and worse. Absolutely had to pit again after lap 30, and went back to Sports Soft, plus a little fuel (was down to 40%), and left the pits in 4th, 20-odd seconds behind the 2 RX7s, who had also just pitted (No NSXs in the race).
Took it much easier on this stint, running consistent 2.12s and made the tyres last me until lap 50 - when they'd started to fade, but nowhere near as badly as in stint 1, as I'd not pushed them so much. I had managed a smooth overtake of the RX7s and kept them abotu 12 seconds behind me.
After my final pit, I was in 2nd, 15 seconds down with 10 to run. I knew if I ran the consistent 2.12s I could get him, but a single spin would likely cost the race.. that is, until on lap 52 I watched him spin on the first hairpin, and cruised past him into the lead. With a combination of consistent laps and back-markers, I finished about 30 seconds clear.
Was a great, tense race, but not so much because of the close racing, more due to pit strategies and my poor use of the Sports Hard tyres. It did make me realise that there is (at least in the Enduros) some well-implemented tyre wear there!
I'm sure that if I ran the race again with this knowledge, and without the couple of spins, I'd beat it very easily, but nevertheless, as my first run, this was great.
