It's very distinctive, I wouldn't say it's a great livery though.
Some of the liveries that have stuck with me, and therefore I think are some of the best, are from the BTCC of (I think) the mid/late 90s. I saw these all the time in games like ToCa 2. You know, the silver Audi with the four red rings, the gold and green Renault.

I mean theres a difference between a great livery and an iconic livery....Just be cause it is gulf colored wont make it great. Just because it is black ang gold wanot make it great either. Atleast I distinguish between them.

I completely agree with you though. I never even considered Rosso Scuderia as a livery until I saw it at the top of this list. If a livery stays in your mind, like the crocodile Audi above, then it's served its purpose (assuming it's advertising something)
The only problem with this is that an equal number of absolutely terrible liveries stay in people's minds too. That's when you have to differentiate.
