I think Valencia will have quite a lot of overtaking this wkend, lots of long straights with big braking zones.
Will try and get my first bit of practice for the track in tonight.
Overtaking at Valencia requires the car in front to make a mistake on a corner before a straight or for you to have significantly more pace than them. In a fair fight with only a small pace difference, its very difficult to catch and complete an overtake here.
Once you are close enough though, there are plenty of places to pull the move off, its just getting into that zone is harder than other tracks as you can't take a compromised line to force the overtake, its based entirely on slipstreaming and superior corner exits.
I generally find the run through sector 1 to turn 8 sets up overtakes quite nicely though and if it doesn't give a successful overtake, it helps build up one on the long straight after 10.
The kerbs at turn 5 make it difficult to really nail a good exit consistently though and its easy to take too much and spin or run wide with understeer.
It can get processional if people don't make mistakes. There really is only one way to go with setup as downforce isn't hugely necessary and as long as you practice, its a fairly easy racing line.
It really doesn't help that this track only really allows one racing line, so most of the time overtakes can get messy if the guy in front doesn't notice or doesn't yield. I think everyone needs to pay extra care in the early laps, this track is deceptive in making inside-line overtakes look easy and clean.
