7th GTP F1 World Championship (F1 2010 edition) * SEASON FINISHED :'''( *F1 2010-2016

Sorry for double post, just to let everyone know tonights race may be delayed by 15-30 mins as i'm really tight on time for getting back to it. Hope this is ok. Please be online around 8pm and we'll get started as soon as possible.

hey guys, I won't be racing today. I've had a very busy week and have not practised once - I've never driven Singapore so I would just be a hazard during the race. Taking part would be pointless.

I just had a crazy week, I'm searching for a new flat, doing jiujitsu, went home for 3 days, meeting friends, dealing with the police after getting my bike stolen (worth £800!) etc etc. No time for video games.

Hope you all have fun!

No problem Shaggy.

Sorry to hear that, going to be a small group today. Shame, you could have witnessed a record for nose replacements :scared:

And sorry to hear about your bike, that sucks large!

im driving the track at the moment - just going to eat something then I'll give it another bash. Tricky track to learn in two hours.

Sorry I didn't make it tonight guys I didn't realise the time.

Hope you all hada good race, looking forward to the reports 👍

sorry about that lads - probably a bit of a waste of time for most of you.

I had only barely leant the track by the time race time come about and I kept missing my breaking points and destroying my nose. Ended up rage quiting after losing my nose for the 2nd time and getting a puncture.

I enjoyed the race ;)
Qualifying was ok. P3
We had to restart after internet_user left at the end of Quali.
So I started 5 with pipeslice in 4 and shaggy in 6.
I got a good start and took the lead after a few corners
Shaggy and pipeslice were right behind
Pipeslice suddendly dropped down the field and than crashed his car
Shaggy was pushing me into a mistake than in lap 3
I stayed very well behind him but than kcheeb came out of the pits just infront of me and so I lost about 3 sec in sector 1
After the stopp on wet tyres I was about 12 sec behind shaggy
He pitted for a second time because his tyres got really bad I think
He just exited the pits infront of me but on fresh tyres he was 3 sec a lap faster than me
I stayed out for a few more laps because I hopped he might make a mistake and I could pass him but he didn't
So I pitted on lap 28 and on lap 30 I did my first mistake in the race and crashed into the wall
So I drove the last two laps without a frontwing but still finished over 1 lap ahead of ardius

So 2nd podium in the last two races.I'm really happy about my performance in the last two races and hope for the next two races because I like them as the last two

P.S. The battle for 2nd place in the constructors championchip is very close now

Pity about the small turn out tonight - don't know what happened to Pipeslice if he crashed his car in a rage or by genuine mistake. Still had a nice battle with Baumi in any case. Tyre wear was a big factor tonight which was nice - had I stayed out on my original set of wet tyres and tried to go to the end on them I would have lost much more time than gained through not pitting.

The race results were:

1st. Shaggy Alonso
2nd. Baumi27
3rd. Ardius
4th. kcheeb
DNF Pipeslice
DNF Mutu20

Well that was quite the endurance race! A whole hour of intense driving! I'm glad it ended in a podium rather than in the wall, as it very nearly did so many times.

Qualifying went ok, I immediately set the same laptime I had set only hours earlier offline against the AI - a 1'44 which put me 4th but over 3 seconds slower than the top guys. I couldn't really find an improvement without over-driving the car though I think maybe a 1'43 was possible but that would have still put me 4th.

Due to Mutu getting disconnected and hence the random grid, I actually started alongside him in 2nd on the front row which was a nice surprise. Funnily enough, it was almost a reverse grid! I let the pressure of running on the front row get to me though and by turn 4 I dropped to last after jumping on the throttle too early and fish-tailing the car. I had kept the inside line all the way through turns 1,2 and 3 and effectively was just in the lead ahead of Mutu before doing that. But it didn't really annoy me that much because I didn't lose too much time and I know I wouldn't have held onto the lead for very long anyway. The pace that pipeslice, Shaggy and Baumi had was far beyond me.

I think by the end of lap 1 I was back up to 4th after Mutu crashed on the first lap and kcheeb dropped back somewhere (I can't actually remember where I passed him the first time). Pretty much the race was running in a huge gap ahead to the front runners and a huge gap back to kcheeb and Mutu.

After pipeslice crashed out I was running 3rd by the time the rain came. Throughout the race I had various little mistakes and errors, usually just small things that meant I had to use the escape roads and spin-turn but I think I smashed my front wing at least 3 times - one time I also punctured my front-right just before Shaggy came to lap me which was a little tense! I couldn't really move my car fast from side to side so I couldn't move over - I was hoping he slowed down in time and thankfully he did! I think I pitted 5 times total for Primes, Inters and then Wets.

After the puncture and subsequent pit stop, I actually came out behind kcheeb and I enjoyed following him and trying to find a good spot to finish an overtake. For a couple of laps, I got good runs on him out of turn 5 but he didn't move an inch and I had to back out of it. I eventually got a good run out of the final corner to claim the position into turn 1 and from there on build a good gap again.

It took so much focus just to keep the car out of trouble and out of the barriers that I'm elated just to finish this one! The greasy/full wet conditions made a normally slippery track even worse, it was extremely easy to get the braking wrong and slam into the barriers or repeatedly spin the car. Thankfully I never made a mistake serious enough to completely total the car and 90% of the time I caught the mistakes early enough to use the escape roads.

If ever there was a "drive and collect" race, this was it. But to be fair, I did at least have a short but enjoyable tussle with kcheeb, unlike Monza where it was a pretty lonely drive. We need more people in the races again damn it! Certainly for me, the presence of AliT, Mutu, PJ, tombrooks and mikethehockeyfan would be welcomed as it would make the midfield scrap more interesting!

Qualified: 4th Started: 2nd (random grid)
Finished: 3rd
Average race laptime: 1'46 (Dry) 1'51 (Wet)
Biggest mistake: Sliding the car at turn 10 into the barrier and into a destroyed front wing and a puncture.
Favourite moment: Attempting to make a move stick on kcheeb.

This looks like a lot of fun. I plan on getting F1 2011 and I was wondering if there was a chance I could race in a season with you guys? You race at 2000 GMT right? That should be 4 pm my time ( eastern US ) and I am currently racing in 2010 using the restrictions in the first post. I could be a backup driver.

^I'm sure you will be more than welcome, we've yet to have a regular 12-player race yet so I'm sure there willl be free spots.

I'm currently wondering if its worth trying a new race format for the next series which I might trial on 2010 before 2011 comes out. Basically either trying to fit more races in one night and shorten the length of the championship or to make each GP more worthwhile.
My current ideas are:
-Run shorter race distances and then run two races in one night or more.
-Copy BTCC format races (3 rounds per GP, short races, qualifying for race 1, race 2 formed by race 1 results and then a reverse-grid race 3).

My current concern is that very few people hang around for the entirety of these series due to either losing interest or feeling they have better things to do. I wonder if maybe we could get more full race grids if we ran shorter series and made each night more worthwhile. That way, if you actually manage to make it to a race, its not just 4 or 5 of us driving around for 1 hour just for a few points but several races of some fun racing.

Food for thought anyway. I think maybe its better to run these ideas as an alternative championship alongside this one as it would be a shame to no longer run long-distance races with tyre wear, etc.
Its just it would be nice to have some GTP races that are shorter distance and have some more frequent overtaking battles as these are relatively rare (at least clean ones) online.

The UK is currently in daylight savings as we are, I'm in mountain time, the races start @ 13:00 for me. So eastern time would be 15:00 (3 pm). Just wanted to make sure you didn't miss a race, as Ardius said, the grids have been less than full lately :)

The races are a blast, some real fast guys here, super clean and friendly! I've learned a ton from everyone 👍

Race Report:

Qualifying went well, equaled a pb. I should be able to go faster, but I just can't seem to get myself to push harder in sectors 2 & 3. Too many nose meet wall, wall meet nose moments or something, perhaps my memory is too long, lol.

The race was intense and grueling. A full hour of a challenging circuit, with 40 minutes of it in the full on rain. I was drained at the end of it.

After the restart I got P3 and was determined to not make the same mistake I made at Monza. Probably a tad tentative into 1 which allowed Baumi through, going into 2 Pipeslice was on my left, our tires got together with Pipeslice ending up the worse for it. Seemed to me to be a racing incident, so I didn't wait for him, I knew he'd be along shortly. The rest of the first lap saw Ardius and Internet_User have moments, which I was able to take advantage of. Ardius wasted no time getting back in front of me. Near the end of the lap, Pipeslice had a moment himself and had to pit, this allowed me through to 4th, pleased but not comfortable.

The rain started on lap 5 way too early for my liking, I thought it best to stay out as long as I could on the Primes. Didn't last long as I had one of those nose meet wall incidents and had to pit on the same lap. Once again as I was waiting for the boys to do their work, I realized I hadn't told them to put rain tires on, frig! So away I went on the Options to see how far I could make it. Turns out it was only a couple of laps, again nose meets wall, you'd think they'd have had enough of each other! At any rate, this gave me the chance to get the wet tires on. By lap 10 we're in full on rain, on lap 15 I caught Ardius, he'd used a run off area and I was close enough to take advantage. This was my favourite part of the race. Ardius was pushing me hard and I responded for about 3 laps. I drove harder and started racing instead of driving, thanks, that was a lot of fun!

In the end Ardius got past me, and I slipped back to driving ... I was able to finish the race only 2 laps down, considering I expected to possibly not get points because of the 90% rule, I'm happy with the result.

FWIW, it's so worthwhile spending time working on circuits and improving. At the start of the week I hated this circuit. I wasn't able to compete against the AI at all, by the end of it I was able to finish third against them and in the GTP race was able, at some points, to compete with drivers who've consistently shown they are faster than me.

I now only mildly dislike this track, but only because it's such a grind, very few places to catch your breath!

Cheers and thanks for the race, see you next week!

Good ideas, it does seem interest wanes the nearer you get to the end. Not sure if it's a realization of not being able to win, the excitement diminishes or it's summer and lot's of other things get in the way.

Personally I'd still like to run the 50% races, they're a test of not just driving skill but concentration too. Can you hold it together, at whatever level you're at, for a good length of time. I don't know how they do it in a full race at Singapore, honestly.

I like the shorter sprint idea as an alternative, three grids of 20%, still need a pit stop, but usually not more than 15 minutes a race. Doing a couple of test runs would help work the bugs out and help hone the ideas/test the waters.

👍

Sorry I didn't make it tonight guys I didn't realise the time.

That's too bad, missed you Ali.

Sounds neat. How long are the races usually? What time do the races usually start, 3:10 or 3:15 my time? Just wondering because I have a F1 series in GT5 that I am in on Sundays and those races usually start about 4:10 or so. Looking forward to signing up when F1 2011 gets here.

Shaggy usually starts sending invites around 12:45 Mtn/14:45 East/19:45 UK.
The races rarely start later than 13:05 Mtn/15:05 East/20:05 UK, if they are going to be later than that, he gives a heads up.

Races are 50% with qualifying and are usually between an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the circuit.

Thanks Ken, obviously Im gutted I missed the race but part of me is glad in a way as it's such a energy draining track and I was in no state for anything yesterday other than chilling out all day (I really have to stop going out and getting pissed on saturday nights :yuck:) plus it has been a bit of a stressful week, I managed to crash last week due to a hangover who knows what would have happened last night haha

Thanks for the info dude, but unfortunately that will cut it real close for me to switch games and qualify for the gt5 F1 races at 4 pm est. I will keep an eye on the thread for F1 2011 and if the times of the races work out for me I will sign up for sure. I would like to race with you guys in this game but I don't want to miss any gt5 races because the other drivers and I have raced with each other for months, just like you guys have here :)

Just read through some of the race reports, sounds like some good racing is going on. I would just like to say that if anyone is interested in a F1 2011 championship and/or a GT5 Super GT championship then check out this site, thanks: http://motorracingleagues.freeforums.org/

I would love to but I have a problem with rules that demand everyone makes 3 consecutive races or otherwise takes a penalty - obviously because I myself cannot always attend all races when others can. Which also makes me question rules to do with the race only going ahead with 12 runners - as we have found right here, this is pretty rare, even just for two consecutive races.

I also don't think much of pretend safety car periods, but thats just me. Its gutting for people to be involved in turn 1 incidents but organising stuff like that is complicated, time-consuming and not really fun. But I can see why some would prefer their races not being ruined so early. I've been in online races where we've attempted pretend safety cars, rolling starts and our own grid-starts and its always felt a bit naff and people always feel they've been disadvantaged.
I also don't see what stops people from repeatedly having turn 1 accidents after each safety car. At least without, the only serious danger zone is turn 1 on lap 1. With a safety car, you run the risk of multiple turn 1 accidents on several different laps.

I hope I don't seem too critical, I just felt like explaining myself. Good luck! 👍

Funnily enough, the reason I came up with multi-race GPs is partly because of turn 1 accidents - perhaps if we are running more than one race and a lower number of laps, people won't feel as aggrieved? Of course I know that won't be the case from all of the short-distance GT5P racing I did back in the day. But certainly I think everyone's racecraft might be improved from short-distance running and twice or triple the number of race-starts. Certainly its an area we rarely practice.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. The more we practice the right things, the more consistent we are at doing them. Hadn't considered this angle for the shorter series you're proposing 👍

Thanks for the advice, I will take that on board and certainly adapt some things to make is more "racer friendly". Thanks for taking the time to look at
the rules though, it's much appreciated :)

On the fake Safety Car, I'll probably run a poll to see who wants one as it's a topic with mixed views, some people want one, others don't. Personally I've always found it quite good but that's just my opinion but I know what you mean, you run more risk of having several turn 1 shunts. The reason I decided to put it in is because in F1 2010 it's fairly basic in terms of strategy so I thought it'd bring in another strategic element to the racing.

Hey Guys, just ordered my G27 in the States, works out as 142 GBP :D with Free 3-day delivery 👍 Can't wait to race it on F1 2010!

Speak Soon,

Tom

There's just no reliable means to use a fake safety car unless 2011 allows for a spectator (steward) for the race to sit in and watch from the beginning. Gran Turismo 5's online room has really spoiled console users who run multiplayer leagues. Much more of a PC racing sim setup. F1 2011 will be good but not as flexible in the online room setup.

As far as running shorter 20% events, I don't see that being as fun as a 50% event. Why not just run a shorter schedule while leaving out unpopular / boring tracks and have a shorter championship?

Here are my suggestions for F1 2011 leagues based on the very fun Le Mans Prototype one I run regularly (I want to be in a championship or help run one)

Scheduling suggestions
  • 10 races over the course of 2 1/2 months
  • Eliminate the lowest 2 finishes of each driver when calculating points in case someone needs to be absent or is hungover often on Sundays :sly:
  • Popular, marquee circuits (Spa, Monza, Monaco, Canada, etc) always on season calendar
  • Rotate 4 or 5 tracks in and out of the calendar each season based on driver offseason input
  • Keep the 50% distance and do one race a week to allow adequate time for practice during the week

In-race suggestions
  • All empty human slots filled with intermediate AI drivers on race day, all races filled out with AI drivers to reach a full 24-car field (more lapped traffic, more strategy, more overtaking) (AI drivers are not counted in standings and do not score championship points)
  • One lap formation lap (after leaving the grid) and then a rolling start on Lap 2 in heavy rain conditions
  • Award all running cars finishing a race bonus points to discourage rage-quitting after an accident and a small running field during long, 50% races
