I'm fairly sure there's lot to read about it available but
Not really...

the gist is that Group 7 being faster and more popular than F1 didn't go down well with F1.

It was killed off in favour of Group 6 with 3 Litre engines. This lead to a sports car series with detuned F1 engines and slower speeds. Sports car popularity suffered greatly because of this.

This was partially fixed with the turbo equivalency formula which meant you could run a 2.1 turbo engine instead of a 3 litre normally aspirated engine.

It was properly fixed by Group C. Once Eccelstone and Mosley felt the popularity of Group C impinging on F1, they stepped in to "save" Sports cars by turning it into a 3.5 litre formula specifically for the purpose of gaining engine manufacturers for F1
...but there's a lot of sentimentally charged opinions like that with highly questionable claims such as "Group C more popular than or as popular as F1". (What does that even mean? Group C was not a series.)

And what has this to do with Group 7 at all? First time I've ever read anybody to blame FIA for the death of Can-Am instead of certain German manufacturer destroying the competition and looming 1973 oil crisis.

Group C was a World Championship mate. Since when does that make it not a series?

Group 7 was the 5 litre World Sports car Championship run between 1969 and 1971. What has that got to do with Can-Am?

Nothing at all. That's what.

Yes we all know what Porsche then did in Can-Am.

Group X is a name given to the category (regulations). World Something Championship is a series.

Group 7 was only used in Can-Am and in the European Interserie. You probably meant Group 6 (e.g. original Porsche 917), which was never faster than F1 unless being fast is top speed for you.

Eh no. Porsche 917 was Group 7 and won the 1970 and 1971 World Championship. Group 6 was 3 litre category that ran from 1969 but didn't take took over the World Championship until 1972.

Made a mistake: 917 is Group 5, but you're still the more confused one.

Andy Blackmore's spotters chart is apparently going to be up by end of next week.

A lot of the cars look really awesome this year, I mean the prototypes are always quite cool but this year seems to be the year of the hyper-prototypes

Awesome video. That was a LMP2 disco at the chicane. So many manly tears.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Le Mans is going to be awesome, really looking forward to it 👍

Le mans never disappoints. 👍

Really glad to see Toyota taking the challenge on. It would be awesome to see them as Japanese champions alongside Mazda.

Move over Audi! Your time is done!

Interesting interview on Radio Le Mans with Derek Bell from a while ago.

Pay attention to when he talks about the Porsche 917 and the 956/962 on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans.

Eye opening stuff.

Couldn't hear all, I'm saving for later. But the first 10 minutes or s, with him talking about Steve McQueen's "Le Mans" are very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I was about to post this in the DeltaWing thread, but since it's not DW specific I think it's better placed here:

Regardless, the car that is more interesting to watch go by is the ... DeltaWing. :D

EDIT - Worrying news about Moreau, wishing him a speedy recovery .

I was just being nostalgic just now and Wikipedia'd Peugeot's journey with the 908. I almost forgot just how ridiculously fast the thing was in 2008 when it clocked in the 3'18.xxx's...

I really hope Toyota can bring the battle to Audi though. Given this is Toyota we're talking about, I don't think we can just cut them too much slack and say job well done if they simply finish the race. I'd say finish the race with a pace that is not too far off the Audis, like they showed in practice sessions, and really go for it next year.

You'd think that 1.5 seconds off the pace isn't bad for a first try, but Peugeot scored a pole position from the get-go in '07, and we all know how the Peugeot story evolved at Le Mans... 1 victory in 5 years. Then again, Peugeot were working on the 908 since '05. The TS030 is what, 6 months old?

Peugeot were way further back from Audi in comparison to where Toyota is on their first TEST DAY. But we saw how the gap erased come qualifying.
