AZ, with respect, there is such a thing as hate speech.
There is, but it's not a term recognized in criminal statute in the United States. That's good because words mean different things to different people and at no level of government should action be taken against the governed over speech it doesn't like save for precious few circumstances for which exceptionally high standards must be met.

Of course this doesn't stop action by a private entity over speech it doesn't like, and said action doesn't violate any rights to free speech because only the government can do that.

I twice solicited @AZpocalypse to provide more information after they cried about "cancel culture" in this thread, and I wager they declined on both occasions because "cancel culture" is dependent upon protected speech and action by private entities.

Clearly you haven't heard of Jordan Peterson? The Government of Canada has changed the laws on hate speech/free speech. Welcome to the "free world"

Clearly you haven't heard of Jordan Peterson?
What about what you've quoted me as having said makes you think I haven't heard of Jordan Peterson and what does he have to do with either what you've quoted me as having said or what you've said in response?

'Kay. There's a Canada thread and this isn't it. Are you lost?

The United States has robust speech protections. I referred to them specifically in the post you quoted. You quoted me as having done so.

I'm shocked that a junkie pop psychologist also happens to be a liar. Shocked! Well, not that shocked.
I had no idea he was addicted to benzos until I saw your post and decided to investigate further. Sounds like Mike Lindell for intellectuals.

Would that be the time Peterson lied his arse off about going to jail for pronouns?

So if he or anybody else refuses to pay the fine what would happen next ? Perhaps jail. You consider that a lie or a stretch on the reporter. Again you or the reporter don't have a clue what a judge could impose. Jesus could you find a more left wing rag publication than that. Doesn't suprise me.

His going to jail would be a result of contempt of court for not paying the fine.
Does the bill legislate the use of certain language? And could someone go to jail for using the wrong pronoun?

In the Criminal Code, which does not reference pronouns, Cossman says misusing pronouns alone would not constitute a criminal act.

“The misuse of gender pronouns, without more, cannot rise to the level of a crime,” she says. “It cannot rise to the level of advocating genocide, inciting hatred, hate speech or hate crimes … (it) simply cannot meet the threshold.”

The Canadian Human Rights Act does not mention pronouns either. The act protects certain groups from discrimination.

“Would it cover the accidental misuse of a pronoun? I would say it’s very unlikely,” Cossman says. “Would it cover a situation where an individual repeatedly, consistently refuses to use a person’s chosen pronoun? It might.”

If someone refused to use a preferred pronoun — and it was determined to constitute discrimination or harassment — could that potentially result in jail time?

It is possible, Brown says, through a process that would start with a complaint and progress to a proceeding before a human rights tribunal. If the tribunal rules that harassment or discrimination took place, there would typically be an order for monetary and non-monetary remedies. A non-monetary remedy may include sensitivity training, issuing an apology, or even a publication ban, he says.

If the person refused to comply with the tribunal's order, this would result in a contempt proceeding being sent to the Divisional or Federal Court, Brown says. The court could then potentially send a person to jail “until they purge the contempt,” he says.

“It could happen,” Brown says. “Is it likely to happen? I don’t think so. But, my opinion on whether or not that's likely has a lot to do with the particular case that you're looking at.”

“The path to prison is not straightforward. It’s not easy. But, it’s there. It’s been used before in breach of tribunal orders.”

I see you didn't read the provided source, and it's not the only one.

Oh and I had no idea of its political leaning, it was simply the first (of many) on Google.

Paterson's claim was click bait aimed to draw in idiots, it wasn't actually accurate or truthful. However I'm sure you can show him to be being honest by listing all those who have been jailed (or even faced the risk of jail) for such an action.

Please don't fact check anything. My God what extremes will some of you go to. Fact checkers that are fact checked false.Petersons claim was clickbait? The only idiots are people that can't or won't identify as biologically what they are. You know science.I want to be known as what today? If a Country like Canada can take away your "right" to free speech, what's next? A free Democrocy? Dave Chappelle ring a bell. Here's what happens, your entitled to free speech in the US. If they disagree, the left wing,CNN,NBC et all will shame you,dox you and woke the hell out of you into submission. If that doesn't work they will peacefully protest into a kumbiya of rioting and looting until the Government steps in. Sounds great to me.

Wait, we are rioting and looting Dave Chappelle until the Government steps in?

I do. Apparently you don't.

Genuinely amazing these two... thoughts can appear in the same onslaught of words.

What does Canada, Canadian law, and Jordan Peterson's objection to Canadian law have to do with the USA? Take it to the Canada thread.

I did.

You didn't.

So you offer an inane diatribe in place of an actual rebuttal. More than enough legal experts have stated Patterson is talking nonsense. What you instead demand is not free speech, but freedom from consiqences.

Oh and you even managed to get the science wrong, gender is a social construct, biological sex is not the same thing. Never has been and never will be, no matter how much the right throws a tantrum about it.

This was pretty shocking to see:

I grew up in the next town over (Lake Orion) and Oxford was one of our biggest rivals. I knew a bunch of kids that went there though and even now I have friends who have kids in high school at the very school that had the shooting. One person posted on Facebook that her two kids were safe, but there are a few others that I haven't heard from yet. I sent them a text, but I figure they're probably in a panic at the moment. Hopefully, once things cool off they'll let everyone know.

The far-right and the extreme right of the Republican party are pitching fits at one another and I'm just here for it.

Why did it take half a year for CNN to finally do something about Chris Cuomo; and why is he not fired yet? Nothing that came out in the past 24 hours is any different from the things that were open knowledge in May when Andrew hadn't yet resigned and Chris was known to be running interference for him; or even a few months ago when news broke that CNN specifically offered him the chance to take time off to do that.

He is suspended. Here comes the cover-up.

Thankfully, I've heard from everyone now and their kids are safe, albeit traumatized. Based on what my one friend told me, her son said the shooting seemed targeted. It'll be interesting to see what comes out in the investigation though.

What's weird is that as soon as the police showed up, the shooter, a 15-year-old male, surrendered and then immediately asked for a lawyer. His parents seemed to have one at the ready to hire too. There's got to me more to this than a kid wanting to terrorize his classmates. With that said, I hope they can pin first-degree murder on him.

If his parents are complicit in this homicide, then I hope they're charged as well.

That certainly implies a different motive. The modus operandi in these kind of shootings tends to be for the shooter to shoot themselves as well.

According to a report, the 15 year old had used a firearm that was purchased during a "Black Friday" sale. If it truly occurred on Black Friday, that would not be a very good look for the parents either.

Yup, based on all the reports the shooter's father purchased the firearm, a 9mm Sig Sauer SP2022, on Friday. There's also a bunch of social media posts where the shooter was target shooting with it all weekend. The father at least is going to be in for a rude awakening when he's slapped with several felony charges. In most instances you need to be 21 to purchase or possess a gun under 26", but in some cases, you can be 18. It all depends on where you buy the gun at.

The firearm was also likely not fully registered either since in Michigan that requires submitting paperwork to your local police department. When I bought my pistol, I had to go the next day to the police station and turn in all the paperwork for it to be fully registered. While I'm not sure the prosecution will pursue this, it's certainly another option to throw another charge on to everything.

Unfortunately, there are laws in Michigan regarding suspects under the age of 18 so we might not immediately know the shooter's name. I'm sure some students will probably say though and I'm sure it's already out there since the content of the shooter's social media is already being talked about.

**I actually just looked at the archived pages of his Instagram. The kid was seriously deranged.

Ethan Crumbley.

Yeah, that one wasn't going to be a mystery for long no matter what laws may exist imposing prior restraint regarding identity disclosure for minor offenders (which is to say offenders who are minors and not to suggest that the offenses are minor).

I wish I didn't know and there's not really a way to prevent it from being known. Kid may have done this just for being known.
