...the whispering campaign of the forties and fifties which led to the establishment of the HUAC.
It was more like shouting and roaring! Really almost (but not quite) deserves a separate thread. My uncle Fred was an open and avowed communist. Many Americans flirted with communism in the 30's, just as others did with isolationism. Our society was liquid, unformed and inchoate then, as it is now, deToqueville notwithstanding.

Whether this was a "joke" or not, its pretty concerning that any president would say this:

"He's the head of the country. And I mean, he is the strong head," Trump said in the interview. "Don't let anyone think any different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.

Essentially Trump "joked" that he wants to be a dictator on live TV. Gaff or not, you have to be a special kind of stupid to say something like that.

Yea I don't know how much of a joke or gaff that is. Trump is the most aggressive president I know of toward violating the first amendment and silencing critics. He tried to pardon himself, and seems to know no boundaries when it comes to government power. I think maybe dictatorship is actually somewhat appealing to him.

Or he's saying that his people respect Kim and he wants Americans to do the same. How it looks all depends on the glasses you are wearing.

Admiration of a brutal dictator in any sense is not something a president should joke about or even say. It's akin to saying "You know who had some good ideas? Pol Pot. Lol, just kidding!"

And the respect of Kim comes through outright fear. If you don't respect him you end up in labor camps or just simply executed - along with your family. If Trump wants respect out of a fear then he's an even more of a terrible person than I originally thought.

US Presidents also don't deserve respect unless they do something to earn it. I'm not terribly old, but going back through the handful of Presidents I've witnessed or know enough about, I can't think of any that really deserve a ton of respect.

That may be the funniest thing I've seen in this thread since:

"Told y'all they had it in for Trump...
One reason why I don't be studying y'all..."

Respected, feared — surely they're practically the same.

Is Trump looking to hire a PR person that will spin literally anything he says into something positive, no matter how tone-deaf? We've obviously got one just waiting for the job, but I know how he feels about Canadian imports...

It seems pretty obvious to me that Trump is blowing smoke up Kim's 🤬 ass to build a relationship with him to use a more personal approach to get what he wants. Whether the feelings are genuine or not I can't speculate but it seems like he's appealing to Kim's ego first and moved away from the harsh rhetoric. What's the alternative? Nothing else has worked for decades, the nukes are already there. I've had some success in business and my experience tells me that relationships are everything. People like you, they do business with you, almost above all else. They don't like you, they'll only do business with you begrudgingly if there is no other alternative. It seems to me Trump is trying to build up a relationship of equals with Kim so that he doesn't lose face when eventually he denuclearizes, if that should come to pass. Never underestimate the ego. Getting people to do what you want through relationship is a lot easier and cheaper and safer than with F-35's and a few divisions of tanks.

Or Friday, in this case.

Joining in the Trump bashing is too easy. Reminds me a lot of people making fun of gays, handicapped and immigrants back in the day. I'm not a fan of echo chambers.

Criticizing Trump because he goes into important diplomatic situations willfully ignorant, and because he clearly has a soft spot (envy?) for brutal dictators is the same as being a bigot?

You can't be taking yourself seriously at this point.

While it might be a poly to win Kim over, it comes across that Trump wants to have the same respect through fear that Kim has. That's not a good look for a president. I know Trump likes to make everything about him, but in this case, making it about him is a detriment. There are other ways to stroke someone's ego without saying you want to be like them in some way, especially when that way is being respected as the result of fear.

As an example, Trump could have easily said: "you know Kim is smarter than we give him credit for". There praises Kim's intelligence without saying implying you want to be more like him. Kim isn't a role model for anyone and is not someone that anyone who's sane should look up to in any way.

And what's the alternative? How about stop trying to force the US way of life on the world and mind our own business. North Korea doesn't like the US because it butts into its business. If we stopped caring, there wouldn't be an issue. The US wants to be in control of the entire Asian region and all it causes is issues - much like it does in the Middle East.

I don't really see any reason why North Korea shouldn't have nuclear weapons. It's a way to protect itself from other powers in the region. It's much like the gun owner in the US who wants to protect their property. As long as they don't use the weapon unlawfully, it's fine to have.

A little example of trade wars backfiring:

It can't be anything else right? Imposing tariffs on foreign goods has to have the effect of rising prices. Aside from just paying the tariffs, you're contracting supply. When trump says he's imposing a big tariff on Chinese goods (which just happened), keep in mind that if you live in the US you're the one who is going to pay for it.

Someone so uninterested in echo chambers wouldn't be bending over backwards to spin anything 45 says in a positive light. You just don't like echo chambers that don't line up with your desired message.

There's a lot of unneeded stretching to bash Trump out there. His hair, his hands, etc etc — stuff that's practically playground insults.

This isn't one of those things — this is a sitting president that said the following about one of the most brutal dictators in our time:

"He's the head of the country. And I mean, he is the strong head. Don't let anyone think any different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same."

And your response:

Or he's saying that his people respect Kim and he wants Americans to do the same. How it looks all depends on the glasses you are wearing.

Now, you're doubling down, comparing criticism of Trump's comments to bigotry?

It's frankly surprising that you can't separate criticism from "bashing". That, or you simply are choosing not to.

He could have said something different but he didn't. He's not a politician. He has no filter. It's not an excuse it just the way it is. If the U.S. had minded it's own business from 1945 on you think the world would be a better place? Be serious. You think the Russians would have said, "Oh the U.S. is ignoring us I think we'll stop annexing countries and trying to take over the world?" Burying your head in the sand is a great strategy when you don't have a neighbour that is hellbent on taking over the world.

As @baldgye points out Trump is a politician now and it's a career path he chose.

And do I think the world would be a better place? I'm not sure, but I do think life in America would be better. We wouldn't have a military complex, we wouldn't have terrorists who wanted to kill us, and we'd probably be a champion of diplomacy instead of acting as the world police. My taxes would probably be lower too since I wouldn't be paying to fight god knows how many conflicts and dole out money to the military like its candy.

He's not a politician.

He's the ambassador for the Seal of the United States of America. So he is.

He has no filter.

Obviously.

It's not an excuse it just the way it is.

It was offered as if it was an excuse, but okay. The fact remains that he said it, and I agree it was unfiltered and that he could have said something different. But he didn't, he said what he said. Hopefully we'll see the real strength of the Constitution at work now.

Interestingly, the article which quotes this "joke" is now unavailable on the internet and returns an "access denied" error.

Here is an alternative link and the doubtless invalid tweet it references; how long this'll stay up, I'm not sure.

Check...and check.

He has no filter.
Except he does. I think very little of him, and don't hesitate one bit in saying that, but I believe almost ("covfefe") everything he says is thought out...he's just not terribly bright, so it comes off as spontaneous.

I know you get all hot and bothered when people dispense with social niceties, but it's not behavior befitting an individual of...*shudder*...his station.

Don't bring me up in your jokes.
You're mistaken...it wasn't a joke but a forthright and earnest statement. It really was the funniest thing I'd seen since. If you don't want to make people laugh, you shouldn't say funny things.

But while you're getting testy with me, you've completely dismissed comments directed at you based solely on the implication that people can't be aware of the goings-on of a country in which they don't reside. I'd wager there are countless "outsiders" more aware than countless "insiders."

I'm not suprised coming from a non-American you see nothing.

Come on @ryzno, you know better than that. The rest of the world isn't a complete black hole you know :D

When they finish reading the 550+ page IG book of a report you'll see it's deeper.

Looking forward to seeing it. What is important so far (and in the future) is to think about whether somebody's personal opinion stops them doing their job. In the case of FBI agents it's evidently quite easy to see what official communications they had and what official actions they undertook. From that it's easy to gather evidence of bias. The problem here wouldn't be that people hold private opinions - it would be if people were found to act on those private opinions in a professional and supposedly-neutral capacity. There seems to be little evidence of professional bias so far.

The truth is funny? Your hatered for Trump has you deranged. Y'all circle jerk each other any time Trump does something y'all dislike. Y'all continue to nit pick over NK instead of looking at the positive side that something is FINALLY actually getting done.
Who needs to watch CNN? Y'all regurgitate them to the T.
And just like Husker, who made you the god of the O&CE section? I'll answer who I want when I want.
