I would like for you to explain how... perhaps not in this thread but somewhere.

I sure will, as soon as I have the oppurtunity.

Not in the schaivo case. Not in the abortion case. Not really in the social security case. Your view of conservatism is incorrect. They do not seek to preserve or revert.

How so? :boggled:

The schaivo case was new legislation to change the way cases like hers are typically handled - not only was it in disagreement with the original law, it was in disagreement with the judicial structure.

In the social security case, Bush seeks not to revert to the early 1900's when we didn't have social security. I think Bush thinks it's a good thing - he just wants to change it into something a little different then we've ever had before - a social security that takes advantage of the market.

As far as I know aborition has always been legal. Perhaps in the earliest days of the country it was shunned in some towns, but as far as I know it hasn't been against the law. I'd be more than willing to be corrected on this because I'm not terribly familiar with the way things were prior to roe v wade.

Edit: In fact, let me look that last one up.

Ok, I stand corrected. Roe v Wade was a challenge against the constitutionality of a texas law banning aboritions (except for medical reasons). So Texas had a law against it, but I'm not sure which other states did or not.

Regardless, the ruling has been around long enough that I'm not sure you can claim that conservatives seek to preserve or revert to anything - they seek to change - to impart their current values on the nation.

Ah, I see.

i.e. more economic freedom.

OK.

I'd like to throw something in here right quick. Why are Americans and apparently British people so worried about offending other nationalities with our flags in OUR countries?

This is just ludicrous to me. I know that in San Jose, the fire fighters had the american flag on their trucks and the county had them take it off as it might be offensive. Who cares! This is America! If you don't like seeing our flag, take yourself back to whatever country you came from. I would love for there to be a constitutional ammendment saying you can display the American flag on American soil anytime you feel like it. I should be able to where a suit made out of the flag, while driving a car painted to look like the flag while haveing a huge flag on all the doors of my house, etc etc.

I mean, if you can't display the very symbol of our nation on gov't property then what's the point?

I would tend to agree with Swift on this. Do you have any details on the San Jose firetruck example? (preferably from the BBC  you know how untrustworthy those shady, fly-by-night news outlets like Reuters, CNN and The New York Times are ;) )

I found this on Urban Legend Zeitgeist: Patriotism:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On September 19, the Berkeley fire chief ordered large American flags removed from fire trucks for safety reasons and for fear that anti-war demonstrators might attack the trucks.

On September 21 the order was rescinded.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know it was taken back, but that's just dumb in the first place. We shouldn't have to fear our own people. I thought we were ALL Americans.

Check out this site....Man, this is why our college system is just jacked!

Sodexho Marriott, which runs the dinning hall, also released an apology, but stated they had reason to remove the flag because it was "insensitive to all the international students that live in the dorm."

A little extreme, but I agree. If you don't like to see the American flag. GET OUT OF AMERICA!

Its more like ;
" If you dont want to see ----- ( insert nation ) ----- 's flag then stay the **** home you moron"...or something like that.
The worse moron is the idiot that determined it was justified to remove the host nations flag..that buttwipe needs electroshock therapy .

Yeah, that works for me.

How do you all feel about people hating on the military. I mean the soldiers themselves. I can't stand it when liberal people start calling them "baby killers" and what not when they have NO CLUE what it takes to defend and protect our nation. Jack Nicholson said it best in a Few Good Men, someone correct me if I quote it wrong, "...Coming from someone that basks in the freddom which I provide and then wants to tell me how to provide it!"

Two words:

1. History
2. Exploitation

Uh, so we're exploiting ourselves by having the American flag on display on American soil?

Swift
Why don't you break it down for me so I don't misunderstand.

Ok, Britain and the USA along with other developed countries have a history of exploiting other countries for their own benefit.
You've heard of the British Empire?
How about companies like the United Fruit Company?
Where do you think the wealth of the USA comes from? It's not from natural resources - well not your own anyway.

Are you aware of the term 'aboriginal'? Dictionary definition:
adj 1: being or composed of people inhabiting a region from the beginning; "native Americans"; "the aboriginal peoples of Australia" [syn: native] [ant: nonnative] 2: having existed from the beginning; in an earliest or original stage or state; "aboriginal forests"; "primal eras before the appearance of life on earth"; "the forest primeval"; "primordial matter"; "primordial forms of life" [syn: primal, primeval, primaeval, primordial] n : a dark-skinned member of a race of people living in Australia when Europeans arrived [syn: Aborigine, Abo, Aboriginal, native Australian, Australian Aborigine]

It may come as a suprise, as well, but we didn't go around annexing empty countries.

I live in England, which is part of Great Britain, which in turn is part of a continent called Europe.

What of it?

Where is England again? What is the Europe you speak of? I don't know things because I'm just a stereotypical stupid American.

Do dee do, oh look there are some people with money to steal, let's take their natural resources and go get fat and laugh back in America - because that's what we evil Americans do.

I don't know if you read my previous posts but, I have already cited the British Empire as an example of oppression and exploitation...

And where are American products made, in the USA? Or is it more likely to be Thailand, Vietnam or some other under-developed country?

Just wanted to make sure you were a citizen of a country that you were bashing.

Well, you name ONE superpower nation that isn't built on the backs of slavery and oppression. Can't do it. I'm not saying it was right. I'm just saying that's how it all happened.

I'm a black man living in America. Now, I could stay bitter my entire life and just say, "Slavery messed up my life and white people just keep it all for themselves!" Or I could realize that it's up to me to get out there and get something started if it's going to happen. I can whine an complain all I want, it won't change the fact that slavery exited and racism is still existent in this country. It also WILL NOT deter my patriotism in my country.

I know my government is far from perfect. But so is every other government. I love my country and will always be proud to wave the American flag.

If you want to be ashamed just because of some things that happened before you were born. Well, go ahead. But I'm not going to dwell in the past when I can help make a better future.

I'm not ashamed, I'm just not proud of a symbol of oppression, exploitation and racism.

And I don't think the fact that I'm British has any relevance to whether I'm allowed to 'bash' countries for acting unjustly. It's not like these countries have stopped the exploitation or oppression.

Yeah, it does. anyone can throw stones from the other side of the fence.

You have a very unique outlook. And yes you ARE ashamed. You don't like what you think your flag stands for. You thinks it's oppressive and racist so you're ashamed of it. Rather sad actually.

It's not my flag, it represents the British Empire in past context and in modern context it has been used as insignia for fascist parties.

How is not being proud of a flag, a flaf ffs?!?!, sad? It's got nothing to do with me, my life or even modern life in general.

My flag... you do make me laugh.

EDIT - out of interest, what do you think about the confederate flag?

Well, you quite obviously have very little if any love or patriotism for your country.

Of course I think the confederate flag is not good. It was a symbol that slavery is correct. Sure, there were other things, but that was the main thing about the confederacy was slavery.

I'm proud of my country, where it's come from and the super power it's become in only about 225 years. Yes, we have some shady and shameful history. But there are many other things about America that make me proud to be an American.

So, I'm going to fly the American flag anywhere I want to on American soil and NOT CARE if I offend someone with it.

That's very considerate of you.

How about if someone wanted to fly the confederate flag?
