Seriously, I think Trump has to be the most anti-first amendment president in the history of the US. It is mind boggling that right wingers support this guy. Your 2nd amendment rights are nothing without 1st amendment rights!

Freedom of speech is the most fundamental of all liberties enshrined in the US constitution. I honestly cannot believe how willing people are to stomach Trump's assault on it.
POTUS
Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.
That's a line from a hilarious satire, right?

Wonder how he would attempt to drive this. It would get immediately slapped down by the Courts under existing laws. I don't think any sort of regulation bill could make it through congress. That leaves an executive order. I wonder what pretense he would use then? National Security Emergency? That seems blunt enough. Maybe he would try to outright nationalize Twitter - give it a nice '.gov' domain. Wouldn't that be something. I mean, it's definitely the Patriotic choice.

I guess once he said he wasn't shutting down the economy again if a second wave happens, that was the end of Covid. Now, it's back to golfing and Twitter disputes.

I'm surprised Timothy Klausutis wasn't mentioned in that article. Klausutis appealed to Twitter to remove tweets that Trump posted spouting off on a conspiracy theory that Joe Scarborough, while a Republican congressman in Florida, was involved in the death of Lori Klausutis, a member of Scarborough's staff and Timothy's wife.

Trump's response to this, of course, was that what Timothy "actually" wants is answers about his wife's death.

This is Mike Cernovich grade bull****. You have got to give Mike credit, though; it's one thing to stick your hand up a puppet's ass and make the mouth open and close, but the dexterity he demonstrates by working the thumbs the way he does is next level.

He's pretty crap with 2nd Amendment rights too.
I suggested it before, but maybe I need to publish a series of pop-up books that focus on the Constitution. Sure, he'd spend a lot of time on the front end flipping through, giggling and clapping as the pretty colors burst from the page as if by magic, but maybe at some point he'd get Pence to read it to him. Mike's gotta do the voices, though, or Donnie will get distracted.

Government shutdown; use people as pawns until the opposition caves. It didn't work for the wall, but you just know Mitch will still be down with round two.

Man, I totally buy a series of pop up books about the Constitution. My little dude loves pop up books.

Will be interesting to see what he will be signing today. I guess it’s just some symbolic nonsense, since I doubt he wants to get defeated in court so close to the election.

Unless he plans to lose in court and use that as an excuse to launch a campaign against the rule of law as well as the freedom of speech. Could be the most Orwellian presidential election campaign yet: “Defend justice by protecting it from the courts. Defend freedom of speech by taking it away from the media.”

This is fun.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Wednesday separately announced they were both working on legislation to strip Twitter of federal protections that ensure the company is not held liable for what is posted on its platform.

The lawmakers began work on legislation following Twitter’s decision to add warnings to two tweets by President Trump this week in which he railed against California’s decision to expand mail-in voting. Trump tweeted without evidence that mail-in voting could increase voter fraud.

Both Hawley and Gaetz argued that Twitter’s decision to flag the tweets called its legal liability protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act into question. Section 230 protects social media platforms from facing lawsuits over what users post.

Trumpism, man.

Oh, and Matt Gaetz is a crusty dew rag.

I'm not too concerned about Trump targeting social media platforms. If the Supreme Court upholds its duty in the slightest bit, it'll nix any laws on it on First Amendment grounds. If the Supreme Court upholds it, then we have a far bigger issue that needs addressing.

If is a bigly word. The impeachment "trial" in the Senate kind of sets the tone for US political cynicism for the rest of time, never mind Trump's time in office.

Personally, I feel that which of the two old, white , senile "racist, rapists" gets elected - the fat, one with the weird hairdo, or the thin one with the plugs - matters.

I'm still concerned about it. The supreme court is the last line of defense, and sometimes they do fairly insane things (Kelo v. New London). I'd be less concerned about it if POTUS wasn't directly attacking fundamental rights, cornerstones of society, the very legitimacy of the government.

I don't think it matters because if Biden is elected, we're going to have a different set of controversies. I can't imagine Biden is fit to run the country, there's no way he's with it mentally, he's showing more and more signs of Alzheimer's. So assuming he gets elected, I can almost bet that the Republicans will start calling for his removal on those grounds. That's going to create a pretty big crisis, especially if removal fails and Biden really starts to decline. He's already shown that he doesn't think before he speaks, his whole thing about "if you don't support me, you ain't black" and "poor kids vs. white kids" is proof of that. While I don't think he'll take to social media like Trump, I can certainly see him saying some absolutely awful things.

I honestly don't know how anyone who considered themselves a Democrat can support Biden. The man is not mentally fit for the job, is probably a rapist, and definitely a racist. You know who's also not mentally fit for the job, probably a rapist, and definitely a rapist? Trump. In my eyes, Biden is just the Democrat Trump.

Ya, you do have a point. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd rather Trump not be doing this, but I'm hoping the US still has at least some sense of checks and balances in place. I can't imagine any media being for this either, including super right-wing media. If what Trump is proposing sticks, then right-wing media will certainly come up major fire the next time a Democrat is in office.

Executive order incoming.

Okay, seriously, who traveled back in time and stepped on something they shouldn't have?

This is fun unreal.

Anderson put his cartoon The Trump Cult up for sale on the online retailer Redbubble this month. The illustration shows Trump with supporters in Maga hats, serving them a drink that has been labeled "Kool-Aid", then "Chloroquine" and finally "Clorox", a US bleach brand. The cartoon is a reference to the 1978 Jonestown massacre, where more than 900 people died after drinking cyanide-laced punch at the order of cult leader Jim Jones, and to Trump's widely denounced idea of injecting bleach* to protect against coronavirus. Trump has also been taking the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a protection against Covid-19, despite a study showing it has been linked to increased deaths in patients.

But Redbubble pulled Anderson's illustration from sale following a trademark infringement claim made by Trump's campaign organisation, Donald J Trump for President Inc. Writing on the Daily Kos, Anderson said that he believed the claim was made due to his depiction of Maga hats, and described the situation as "absurd".

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) and other free speech organisations subsequently got involved, sending a group letter to Redbubble that accused Trump’s campaign of having "misused Redbubble's reporting mechanism to suppress protected political expression in the form of parody, critique, and satire", and arguing that the work and those who publish it are protected by the first amendment.

Redbubble reinstated Anderson's cartoon this week, saying that it strives "to respect IP rights and freedom of speech, but we sometimes make mistakes, as we did here … We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused."

In a statement, Anderson praised Redbubble for recognising the error, but said there were some "troubling issues" raised by the affair, including that the cartoon was removed less than 24 hours after he posted it, before he had received a single order.

"I doubt anyone had even seen it yet on the site," he said. "This reveals that the Trump campaign has a system in place, trawling for material they find objectionable. If it happened to me so quickly, it likely has happened to others. How much other content has been removed this way on Redbubble and other sites?"

He added: "It must be pointed out: the president of the United States is a hypocrite who complains about the 'violation' of his free speech on Twitter, then tries to actively suppress the free speech of others. These are actions of an adolescent wannabe-authoritarian."
*The article indicates Trump recommended injecting bleach, and I'm compelled to note that the notion was actually to utilize disinfectant (of which bleach is an example) internally.

Speaking strictly for myself, it's pretty easy actually. It's because he's the only shot we have of getting Trump out of there. It starts there and ends there for me.

What would removing section 230 protections even do from the conservative vantage point? It would just make them liable for what people post...which seems counterproductive for Trump's purposes? Isn't Trump effectively sabotaging his own megaphone?

But is there any other reason why I should vote for Biden other than "he's not Trump". Anyone I've had a conversation with can't tell me why I should vote for Biden other than that statement. Look through his stance on things and his voting record, it doesn't look like he's worth voting for at all. Couple that with his questionable image and he seems really unappealing.

The takeaway is that people are being mean to him and he doesn't like it one bit.

Good faith sleezeball geezer who ultimately cares about America, probably
vs
Bad faith sleezeball geezer who ultimately cares about only himself, definitely

That's basically what it boils down to.
