Ask GTP About Your Car Problems/General Questions

I ignored you all. Saw FTW

After removing the nasty plastic... quite a bit of dirt under that thing:

After cleaning it up a bit (it'll need serious cleaning and a bit of polishing to get rid of the outline of the old surround):

And after attaching the numberplate back on with some double-sided sticky spacer things:

It's cleaned up the front a bit but when I have more arsed I'll do a better job of it (I might even budget for a whole shiny new bumper), clean up all the little drilled holes (the big holes were for the surround, the smaller ones inside them I reckon were from the original mounting of the 'plate, and the ones further out were I think created by the taxi when he reversed into me, as those are the holes stabbed in the plastic by the screws...)

Hey! I got my cars fixed! I removed my ABS fuse(Rx7) and bought a new battery(buick)! Thatman's deducting skillz FTW!

Hey car guru dudes, got a question. It's been reccomended to me on the F150 forum I frequent that advancing my timing 2-4 degrees from stock would net a very noticeable gain in power. Would this have any adverse effects on my engine?

It might slightly effect your gas mileage but probably not anything else.

I remember when I went to check mine on the Barracuda it was at 15 BTDC, which I thought was crazy because stock is supposed to be 5 BTDC. I adjusted it back to stock, the idle went down, my lifter tick got a ton louder, and while giving me a minuscule amount of power, it ate up all of my gas, so I just adjusted it back.

EDIT: I have a random question about the Volvo. Just the other day I found out that I've been driving with overdrive on all the time. I always thought overdrive was something you had to engage, but when I click the button it stays in third until I click it again, and when I turn the car off it automatically goes back into overdrive. My question is, for gas mileage, should I just leave it that way and always drive in overdrive, or would waiting until I hit 55 (where it says I should go into overdrive) have a positive effect.

All the "overdrive" button in a car like that does is allow the 3-4 upshift (or 4-5 upshift) or not. Leave the button in and let it shift all the way up.

But do you think I could get better gas mileage otherwise? The only reason I ask is because it shifts into fourth way too early so I basically have to floor it to get going.

The road I'm on is a three lane 45-50mph road with street lights so I regularly have to stop and get back up to 55-65mph (traffic flows pretty quick) over and over again.

"OD off" is the overtake button. Turn it off if you really, really, really need to overtake... turn it back on otherwise. Sucks on the CR-V, it has an OD button that locks you into third gear or lower, when the CR-V actually has five gears. Oh for flappy paddles...

So my mom's car is broke down so she borrowed a friends van. Last night it got fairly cold(got to the negatives) and this morning it wouldn't start. We tried jumping it a couple times throughout the day to no avail. Any ideas on how to get it to start?

I should note the van ran fine yesterday to my knowledge.

-Thanks.

Was it cranking (as fast as normal, at all)? Could be there was enough moisture in the fuel system to freeze, causing a blockage (which a bottle of gas-line antifreeze would fix)...

Anyone else with ideas?

Cheers,
Jetboy

Just leave the running jumper car connected to the dead car for a few minutes, maybe even 10. Keep a high idle (2500 rpms or so) on the running car to give a bit more power to the dead battery. Alternately, you could get the dead battery recharged at a local autostore typically for free.

It would crank slowly for a couple seconds than you would just here the starter clicking.
Dead battery. The reason it was dead could be a few things though. The battery itself, some kind of draw on the battery, alternator, ect ect.

Here are some things that I am wondering about for my car (71 Datsun 510)

My car is having trouble starting. Here is some info:
My car uses a push button start (turn key and press button and it starts). I know the connection to the starter is good because it either starts or clicks when you try to start it up. The problem is each time I start it, it gets a little more difficult to start (click, click. click), and then it becomes impossible to start (no click). What do you guys think the problem is? BTW, i have my car battery in the trunk of my car. I bought the car in March of this year and have used the same battery. it also has quite a bit of corrosion on it. I also have a 500W sound system on it, but i dont think that would drain the battery. Also, when I try to start the car, the lights dim and the radio shuts off. if it starts, everything goes back to normal...

Winter. Batteries hate the cold.

Oh... California...

Still... batteries hate the cold and yours could be on the way out... and who leaves their lights and radio one when starting the car? You turn everything off to give yourself as much cranking juice as possible.

Exactly. A starter requires about 80% of your battery's power (At least for about 4 seconds) to function. Any number of issues presented could be preventing ignition. Get the terminals cleaned off (And seal them. They make creames or spray-ons, heard vaseline [petroleum jelly] works just as well.) turn off the radio/amp, lights, even the heater if the starter's weak. Everything helps man. 👍

OK, so one thing all old Commodores suck balls for is a fault that ends up with fuel coming back up out of the filler neck, even with a brand new petrol cap on. It dribbles down the side ruining your paint, looking daggy and losing a little bit of petrol. Does anyone know or have ideas to a fix? I don't even know the fault.

Could it be the wire between the ignition and the starter? I may have to check mine. How can you tell the gauge of an wire if your just looking in the inside of it.

Yeah. I turn everything off when I try to start it. I just think I need to replace the battery. I also need to get new tires cuz my rr is flat and rf has had 2 nails in it since march

It got above zero today and the van started without jumping. I think we are just going to get it back to the owner before it gets back to the negatives.

I don't have a problem, but I do need some advice.

This may not even happen so I didn't want to make a thread, but if I had the chance to buy a Mazda Miata, would I be making a good choice? My dad's coworker's dad is selling a 95 Miata and my dad's coworker wanted to know if I was interested. Unfortunately I don't know anything about it currently except for that it's a four speed manual.

From what I can see the upside would be better gas mileage, a manual transmission (I've never driven one on the road but I'd like to), more power (the 740 has about the same but it's heavy), and just all around more fun when driving.

On the downside it's only a two seater (at least from what I can see about them, correct me if I'm wrong) and I need space for at least three, it's an enormous loss in carrying capacity, and, don't take this the wrong way if you own one, but it has a slight reputation of being a poofers car, at least around where I live.

It would be a lot of work to get it even if I could afford it so I highly doubt it's going to happen, but if the chance comes I was just wondering. I'd have to sell the Volvo, which actually wouldn't be all that hard, but to get any more than I've put into it I'd have to get at least $1500 for it, on top of putting my best "there's nothing wrong with the car" face on because of the dying fuel pumps. Who knows, either way I'm happy, the Volvo isn't too too bad.

If you need to ask, you've obviously not driven one yet.

EDIT: Miatas weren't made in a 4 speed manual. :odd:

Yeah I thought that was odd when I was looking up specs on it, he must have made a mistake. I can imagine they're a blast to drive, would definitely handle better than everything I've driven combined.

We'll have to see how it goes, if the price is right and my parents don't mind I might go for it.

Make sure you take it for a drive to see whether it suits you or not. All the pros and cons, you seem to be aware of. If the positives outweigh the drawbacks for you, go for it.

To be fair I haven't ever seen anyone get a Miata and regret it...

Well it's officially not gunna happen, mainly because the space issue. I have, however, caught the manual bug, and it's got me good. Still haven't driven one but I really want to, I wish my 740 was a manual now.

Kick it, it's like smoking, it'll kill you (at least according to anyone making cars anymore..)

Really I don't blame you though. :D I thought the brick was a manual though.. Odd.

Cheers,
Jetboy

The manual addiction lasts about as long as your first two hour traffic jam. Then it gets old really quick.

Miatas are truly horrid little cars. No cargo space except behind the seats (yeah, that space is more useful than the trunk) and a third passenger will have to sit in someone's lap, which is fun, but likely illegal where you are.

Too bad you couldn't get it, it's a wonderful toy.
