Ask GTP About Your Car Problems/General Questions

How much do you guys reckon it'll cost to get a shop to remove my mufflers and replace them with another set of mufflers that I supply to them?
close to 100... though it may be cheaper. I took mine off around 100. You mean the muffler Tips right?

I'm asking on my friend's behalf. He has a Civic Si (just like Keef's), but lately, it's running through gas extremely fast. He usually averages well into the 20mpg's, but lately, his Civic has been putting out less than my TL, so I know something is wrong when his Si is only averaging 17-19mpg. He hasn't change his driving style at all, either, so he's a bit worried that it could be fuel pump issue or something.

Any advice, fella's?

Muffler tips?

the thing that makes noise that ricers love to hear. I the same kind though I took asked to replace mine with more of a stock looking one.

Is his Check Engine Light on? The computer will throw a specific code when either of the O2 sensors goes bad. If it doesn't get a proper reading from either it'll stay in its "open-loop" cycle, like it does when the engine is cold and at startup, which runs very rich.

Check engine light bulbs do go out every now and then, so you might wanna plug a code reader in there just to make sure. These OBD2 cars, even the old ones, do a pretty decent job of telling you when something vital is wrong. This is just a basic check, btw. When an engine suddenly starts running rich all the time the O2 sensor is usually the first thing to check, via code reader.

Ah gotcha. Well on the Ford Crown Victoria, it had mufflers mounted in front of the rear axle, so no muffler tips.

Oh and to ND4SPD, if you get the correct sized mufflers (pipe diameter and length) and there's no fab needed, it will only be labor you have to pay for. Go to the shop and see what they charge per hour, and figure it will probably take around 2 hours max for a simple switch job. If there's fab, it will be a bit more, unless it's so little they don't charge for it.

@ Revention: Could be a clogged carb, dirty air filter, dirty injectors, stuff like that. I would run some injector cleaner through it. A good general maintenance should help things out.

I believe that's what he's doing right now. He was cleaning his air filter when he told me.

@Keef: I don't believe his engine check light came on, or I'm sure he would have told me. I'll be going over to see for sure, though.

GENERAL QUESTION FOR ALL AUTOMOTIVE ENTHUSIASTS:

What does this popular emblem represent?

I will post a picture if no one can guess what I am trying to describe.

Its a "V" shaped badge commonly found on tuned Japanese cars.

it is green and yellow.

It resembles a 'Chevron' design.

I am real curious :)

I have a 1994 Nissan Sentra B13 EX Saloon. The transmission oil takes a long time to heat up, so shifting from 1-2 is complicated. I haven't managed to get it right yet, and I don't want to screw it up. Tips?

It sounds like you have a manual transmission, and if so the fluid wouldn't affect shifting. Can you describe roughly how it's complicating?

Think of it as the "P" thing drivers in the UK have to display when they're on their learners permit.

Luckily, we don't have to display the P plate. Red L when we're learning, green P for new drivers, but the P is completely optional. Should probably be made compulsory though, would take the knobs in Saxos and Corsas down a peg or two - imagine trying to be cool with a big sign on the back telling everyone you're a n00b!

In that link above - old people have to carry an emblem too? That's a pretty good idea.

That said, in the UK you can pretty much guess anyway - they're the ones doing 20 in a 30 or 60 in a 40, and they're all in Micras and Rover 200s. Much better than a subtle little badge :sly:

Yes, its a stick shift. The complication is the fact that it won't allow itself to engage 2nd gear. The shifter won't move down, and I try to do it gently. Every other gear comes in without a hassle.

If there aren't any codes (check even if the light isn't on) then it's probably in the fuel system like PB said.

Might be a problem with the synchro not engaging properly, or the shifter isn't adjusted correctly. Sounds like something to have a mechanic look at.

Might be, but I always wonder how my dad does the same shift effortlessly. I don't see what I'm doing wrong. (its kinda pissing me off, because I love that car)

Maybe he double-clutches it?

The shifter in our Isuzu is a dog... I can get it to work, but the office driver keeps grinding it.

If it's hard to get into gear, it could be the release bearing... but if it gets better when warm, it could be time to change the oil for something better.

Wow, Im surprised this hasnt been done in America, even for JR. lisences!
Lucky for us, the people driving with that new driver's symbol trying to be JDM are all nearly all young kids who really can't drive for crap.

Anyone know how to fix an Error 4 (E-04) on a car stereo? Mine won't play CDs. Looking around on Google, it pulls up people having problems with disc changers (which I don't have) and burned CDs (the one I tried was an original copy).
