If the open world map is only available streamed and not saved locally thats a real shame, really hope thats not the case, as the most compelling feature will have latency built in. Hopefully this is clarified soon, perhaps the map is considered too big an asset to store locally / is limited use by the company who have licensed it out.

I would hazard a guess that the mention of streaming is lost in translation. Streaming isn't a new nor network-only concept - it usually refers to assets being brought in and out on-demand from whichever media you're using. Games like GTA and Forza Horizon deal with their large worlds as segmented chunks, only concerning themselves with the immediate area around you.

AC has historically been track based which on PC likely means they can get away with having the whole thing loaded at once, simply adjusting the LODs of various objects and chunks as you go around. Now with an open world map being an official feature, especially one of its size, it seems logical that they would mention improvements they've made to their engine to support it.

I can definitely see something like that being the case here, especially with the terrain generation tech they reference, but the 40x40km, 2.5cm resolution mesh is... a lot in the first place.

When we're talking about a game that is going to come to console too, it's likely it's either going to be a very big download indeed or not locally stored, so I felt that it was important to note this latter possibility.

As it's an "optional" game mode, I'd not be surprised if they went the network-streamed path.
 
Famine is getting waaaaay ahead when talking about mods. We know nothing about the Kunos vetting process before mods can be used in Assetto as they want to prevent ripped mod to come into Evo. So no I'm not sure yet gtplanet will host mods for assetto Evo until we get the full details on how locked down the mods will be, if it will be only accessible from an office kunos marketplace like steam workshop for but for Evo, or whatever kunos have in mind to force a vetting process

This is probably a stupid question to most but how do you actually join the early access?

Is it just a matter of paying your money or is there also a selection process involved?
 
A couple of things I'd like to comment on:

  • I sure hope that we don't need internet connection to play the open world in ACE. I'm, personally, tired of all the best free-roam games requiring a connection for some reason. If Saber Porto can deliver a 20000km2 map, offline, like they did in Dakar Desert Rally, so can Kunos. Thankfully, I think TheAdmiester has the right idea. Streaming is not just over the web, it's also the process of data being transferred from storage to memory as it's required, instead of being loaded all at once. And, if I recall correctly, Marco even mentions this, stating that only was is required will be loaded into memory, at any given time. He even makes the point that this is not like flight sims.
  • With regards to the "full dealership experience". I am of the opinion that it's more likely that Davide Brivio/Multiplayer.it made a mistake, than for you to be able to have any version of any car in the game. It's just too much work. Different interiors, different engine bays, different bodywork (remember that cars are supposed to be explorable). What I got from the video is: factory colors, interior trim (basic trim, no major changes), rims, pretty much like Test Drive Unlimited, or The Crew. I think expecting, for example, that you can get anything from a VW Golf 2.0 TDI 115cv all the way to a VW Golf R, just because the GTI is in the game, is a setup for disappointment. At the very least, if this feature is coming, it won't be there at early access launch or even version 1.0.

Forgive me asking but, why are we assuming they are going to use all of this data, as is, in the final product? These types of scans tend to generate a lot of data points that need to be trimmed down, sometimes extensively trimmed down, for it to work in a context of a video game. What the tech generates to begin with, and you'll actually get, with regards to 3D complexity, can be quite different after what's redudant, or excessive, is discarded.

Not sure what made you believe anyone is expecting that. A base Golf, a GTI and a Golf R are completely different car models. What they meant (and we don't know to what extent yet) is you'll be able to buy either a TDI or a TSI, manual or auto, etc.. within the same model if it's something that's also offered irl.

Maybe "expecting" was not the best word to use. "Deducing" would be a better word.

Based on what we we've been told, and I quote Davide Brivio of Kunos, or at least what Multiplayer.it says he said: "For each car, all the configurations and engines that you would find in any dealership will be available. If your favorite car is sold both in petrol and diesel, for example, or in a version that has 17-inch wheels or a sunroof fitted, then it will also be the case in our game.”

When you read that, he's essentially telling you all the configurations available, in real life, of each car, will also be in the game. Most impressively, different engine options, like petrol and diesel. Using the VW Golf as an example again, there are two ways you can go about implementing this:
  1. Each variant as it's own separate car that you can then choose color, rims etc. And we are pretty much going back to Gran Turismo's car-list padding style.
  2. There is the VW Golf Mk8 in the game. You choose it, and then you pick the trim level, the specific variant, and so on. And you watch the car's 3D model change as you configure it.
Regardless of the option Kunos would choose, it would still imply they would have to model several different Golfs, externally and internally, from the basic to the high performance models, and I don't see Kunos using development resourses on entry level versions of cars like the Golf, at least.

To finish this thought, and focusing again on the "sold in both petrol and diesel" part, as far as I know, there are no cars confirmed for the game, that have something like a second engine option, unless you go to the entry level versions. Is Kunos going to bother with all that? Are they going to have the time and the resources?

I hope I was able to express where I'm coming from.
 
There's some skepticism in me regarding the content amount and how much they can provide due to the small studio, like the circuit tracks, if the game's still meant to be about circuit focus, otherwise this'd be hardcore sim version of Forza Horizon.
Hopefully GT is inspired by this and includes an open-world map in GT8.
Yeah with GT bringing back the map menu from GT1-GT4 it should be utilized for it.

I think in this sentence you answered your own question. That's why I don't think anyone is thinking of it the same as you in terms of variations.
The GR Supra, which I'd say has a big chance of being in the game, has a 4cyl and 6cyl engine. That could be a case where you have a car with multiple engine options

Sorry Famine but you made a mistake in the part of the launch of the open world map where you say that the first version will come out in the Early Access launch when they will actually release it in Summer 2024

And from what I understand, the game can be played offline on singleplayer (open world map included) so I think that the map procedural generation is for the time of creating it at the beginning of its development, something similar is used by Ubisoft for its games (at least The Crew Motorfest is confirmed to have used something similar in its early stages of the world map development)

Edit: As an additional note when Marco was asked if we could choose not to install the open world map with EVO he said he was sorry and that installing the Eifel map was mandatory.

Just 4 weeks to go, i was quite supriced that kunos will include the ingame economy from launch of early access, throught it would be feature later down the line, i am all for it.
But i guess upgrading or customize cars will not be a feature until a bit later.
 
Please have a good single player campaign, with a nice progression from a crap car to a good car.

I haven't really enjoyed a good progression system since FM4/GT6/FH1.

Driving is always good in games these days so I am not worried about that.

That won’t initially be the case, nor will the map be available to players alongside the start of Early Access on January 16, 2025. A smaller, but undefined, area will be introduced some time in the summer of 2025, with the map expanding over time to reach the 1600 square kilometer (617 square mile) total.
But even I never thought of moving the marker a year early:

Generally, if you think you've spotted a factual error, it's best to approach me privately, because it may be an actual error or it might be a trap street I want to keep quiet - to spot lazy sites copying, or using AI to summarise, our stuff.
