Either you didn't have the boost turned up or you weren't driving near the limit if you thought the 917 was easier to drive than expected. You'd need to be in the low 20's or lower to be approaching the limits of the cars under ideal track conditions.

I noticed that full boost in this car kills the engine. Crazy! I also damaged a 718 Cayman engine while playing last night as a result of downshifting too early. :embarrassed:

I think this was added in the latest update for consoles.

Yeah. I often turn damage down to only 10% when I'm just having fun hotlapping or really trying to practice a particular combo. That way I won't have to start all over if I crash, for example. But, I've noticed that I developed a few bad habits with some of the vehicles that will blow the engine if driven with no care and damage on 100%.

I'll tell ya...I've never been a fast driver and I'm okay with that, but lately it's like I have completely forgotten how to drive. I took the 2017 Carrera S, Aventador SV & Jaguar XJ13 out for some laps on the Nordschleife Tourist layout. I was spinning out left and right. This has been going on for quite a while too. Even laps that I complete without spinning, I'm awfully sloppy - hitting curbs left and right. That just makes whatever I'm driving unhappy and unbalanced and leads to a lot of tense moments. I hope this is just a temporary issue as it's beyond frustrating. :ill:

I didn't have much trouble with it either, I think because it only has the 4 gears to get through. The turbo lag and gears act as a sort of natural TC for me. Sometimes first gear can get wild but otherwise it accelerates in a much more controllable manner than I expected, even with uneven tire temp. The big problem going to 100% boost was how much sooner I needed to brake for corners  holy moly.

We must be driving different cars. I can get the 917 sideways in third gear quite easily, second gear there's no way I can use even close to full throttle or the car just spins right around. That's with a gearbox tuned for Silverstone 67'.

Bad pedals!

Nah same here, 2nd you can't get on full throttle on corner exit.

I've only had one go in it so far, about 5 laps around Spa, but I didn't have much trouble with it. I had the boost at the highest setting that wouldn't cause engine damage (80%?) and I could give it the full beans without issue as long as I gently rolled into the throttle. I'm sure I wasn't super close to the limit with it but I wasn't babying it either, was really surprised at how manageable it was because I expected it to turn around and bite my face off at any given chance. The 935 killed me to death many times in 5 laps at Spa but I think I only died once in the 917/30 (I got better).

AC punishes sloppiness like no other driving game I've ever played. I tend to get the most consistent results and enjoyment from the game when I treat vicious cars with the amount of respect I would in real life. That's not to say I never try to push the limits, but that's when not being sloppy counts. Easier said than done because simulators allow us to gamble at times where we probably shouldn't. This balancing act is always fun trying to manage.

I agree, I had way more problems with the 935. Really just braking actually. Everything would be fine and then just as I'm about slowed down to entry speed it would start turning in like crazy as if locked up but I swear it wasn't. It was like select brakes were overheating an giving up.

My only rule with the 917 is to wait at 50-75% throttle until the giant boost/torque wave settles, then roll to WOT. Any more aggressive doesn't seem to pay off, even when you get lucky and get mostly non-car-rotating wheelspin.

Yeah, the 935 really loves to go straight but it seems rather opposed to stopping or turning. Not sure if I'll ever drive it again because it was more of a chore than being fun. A good tune might help it, but I'd have to hire an engineer because I'm useless with a spanner.

That's how I approached it too. WOT too soon will see you facing the wrong way quite quickly.

With AC it's good to do a first outlap and get used to the car. Full throttle from the pitlane isn't advisable :)

By the way, does the 911 GT1 compete against the F1 GTR in AC? I remember you had some doubts over this.

I haven't tried them head to head in AC but I've seen several people say they're far enough apart in age that they won't be real close to each other.

On 93% AI difficulty i found that i was faster in acceleration with the GT1, won quite easily but i suppose bumping the AI up to 100 or more and you'd have a real challenge on your hands.

This is kind of what I mean about driving at the limit. There are seconds to be gained by rolling on the throttle faster and managing the wheelspin that comes with it. It took me more time than any other car, so far, to come to grips with, pun intended.

Engine damage from mishifts have been on consoles from release, I know because I'm that clumsy.

Do consoles not have the downshift protection then? On PC it will prevent you from downshifting if the engine speed is too high (with sequential/paddle shifting).

Yes, it has the downshift protection, but with manual clutch you can break the engine fast, and sometimes also with the paddle shifts.

But if you do "donuts"... Forcin the car in first gear at top of rmp nothing happens to the engine.. no overheat,no engine blowing /rupno tyre rupture... :boggled:

Quite strange..

How else are you going to get lift off?

Was that 2008/09 or is the ine I'm thinking of was a dark silver/grey that flipped front over back and flew into the bushes/trees over a barrier?

I've noticed it kicks in much quicker with no traction control/abs.

Ah, ok. I never use manual but I presumed the DSP probably didn't work with it.

No clue, just a random gif I grabbed.

Ok, I've never had it happen before. I have driven paddle shifters which didn't allow downshifts because the RPM was too high, but I always thought it was there to just mimic the real cars.

I drove it at 80% boost and 100% boost. I only applied full power once I'd fully exited the corner - I honestly held the throttle through each of them. I was simply too scared to let rip until I stopped turning the car, so I may not have been pushing it...

I'm stuck using paddle shifting for now. I can't even count how many times I've done engine damage by downshifting and throwing the RPMs well into the red. :banghead: There was a time when Kunos didn't have any downshift protection enabled - even on modern cars that have it in real life. I'm glad they got around to putting it in the game.

There are so many reasons to have a stick-shift when playing on PC because not everybody makes their mods perfectly. I've had to go into drivetrain/transmission .ini files before to make adjustments. Also, I was driving the Jaguar XJ13 last night and there were so many times where downshifting into 2nd would just pop the rear out of balance. I wasn't trying to jam in 2nd at 7000rpm either. Even with auto throttle blip enabled...it's just a car that you're much better off having that 3rd pedal and stick.
