I might have asked this already, but does anybody have a good resource for editing AC cars, particularly using 3DSimEd to convert a model from GT Legends or GTR2? I'm getting tired of waiting for someone to make a good race-spec Jaguar E-Type and was thinking of learning how to do it myself.

@Stupornaut
I can help You with that to an extent...

give me a second to dig out the stuff, and I'll send You the thing per pm.

anyway:
1. you need obviously 3dsimed
2. photoshop with a dds plugin
3. quickbms with plugins that you need to decrypt some stuff
4.time and inspiration

- I'd suggest starting with editing a few existing mods for ac to see the material proprieties like shading used for different parts, etc.
- parts naming are essential when converting, to AC, so the game engine recognizes them. )like wheels, suspensions, windows, etc...

a side note on the tools:

- Photoshop is a top software, worth every penny you spend on it
- 3DSimed is a very rudimental software full of bugs (but using it you learn how to avoid the bugs) ...not worth the money they ask for it, but essential to do conversions... you can model with it, but at a very basic level.
- quickbms is a "hacking tool", so be aware where you are heading.

After few weeks of fiddling with existing mods, you should be able to convert your first car.
Do do a proper physics for your model, you should know a few things about mechanics and physics...

TO do a proper conversion with lods and animations you will need a bit longer.

Check Your pm.

Also, if you want to jump to the next level, you could use 3D Studio Max (free with student license), like I did.
If you want to add stuff missing, like internal windscreen for raindrops, damage glass, wiper animation, I made a video tutorial for 3DS Max.
On YouTube is full of resources about modding/converting cars.

the basic drill with 3Dsimed:

- needles to say, make a backup of your car folder before starting the procedure

1. Import your car by selecting the *.kn5 file and selecting the "texture" folder when asked
2. Do what you have to do in 3DSimed
3. when done, export the textures to the folder "yourcarname/texture"
4. export the model in the *.fbx autodesk format in the folder "yourcarname", and in the dialog select to build the .ini file (Y axis is UP and use binary *6 and include the texture maps)
5. open your exported fbx with the kunos editor (find it in the SDK folder of the game)
6. save your model as *.kn5
7. reopen that saved kn5 with 3DSimed and save it to your game folder overwriting the old one

side note
many gtl cars conversions, for some unknown reason don't have the suspensions, so to get around that if you don't want to model them by yourself, before starting the game and checking your work, start CM and open your car → push the button showroom (the standard kunos one, not the CM one) ... CM will report that the suspensions are missing and offer to fix it → fix it! (CM will add the nodes for the suspensions) ...done.

ps.
Disclaimer:
Everything you do, you do it at your own risk... if you break something it is your own fault

If having difficulties with the basic operations, just ask

Links:

- 3DSimed: download 3ddimed 3.1t from http://sim-garage.co.uk/

- Quickbms:

the link is in the description
you will need a script for extracting acd files

Good Luck!

I've noticed that tutorials usually assume the modder's using 3DSMax, but I can't get a student license because, well, I'm not a student (I assume they check for these things). Is Blender similar enough?
