Whoah... spooky!
I watched this only last night.
Fascinating documentary for anyone of a certain vintage who grew up with these games.
Yep, quite nostalgic. I just came across that video this week but haven't watched it yet because just a couple weeks ago the History Channel had a special called Game Changers: Inside the Video Game Wars that covered everything from Pong to Playstation and a good chunk of it was on Atari because they were so huge and influential in the early days.
Been watching some stuff on Nintendo too. It's all fascinating stuff and they make the comments that games were almost more creative back then due to the limited power of the technology. They had to come up with clever ways to achieve certain things but at the same time the games were kinda bare-bones and the player used their imagination to fill in the blanks and tell their story. Nowadays there are few technological limitations, few blanks to be filled in, and the games while technically incredible have lost some of that romance. Since everything is spelled out for you there's less imagination required from the devs and players. As evidenced across the forums where younger players often complain about things not being all laid out for them or not being exactly how they want/expect them to be. There wasn't much of that in the 80's and 90's because we were just blown away by what was possible and got on with enjoying the games. We also knew we were stuck with whatever version came out of the box, no updates to fix problems back then so they were forced to (mostly) get it right the first time.
