I know which I'd prefer...

Yeah, they say they would never own an original MX-5 or a Fiat 500. Despite their childishness I am still making my first car a Fiat 500
500 is nice, Abarth 500 would be great, although bit expensive for a first car, but in my opinion neither are as nice as Mk1 and 2 CAPS LOCK Cooper and Cooper S, respectively.

Fiat 500 where I am is £100 a month with free insurance (I think). Getting a part time job which pays £50 a week so I should be able to get it if all goes well.

I've loved these since I saw one parked with its owner in Historic Gran Race when I was 8, I even got a chance to sit in it.

I didn't know you could get a 500 for that low amount of money. Is it a leasing car or a hire purchase?

Anytime I mention the original MX-5 to my friends they go on how it's "a girl's car". Same with the Audi TT, Fiat 500 and Mini Cooper, maybe I just like "girly" cars.
If your friend's masculinity is so fragile that he has to malign two of the best driver's cars on the road (over a Corsa? Really?), then he should really learn to shut up.

Also, you need to talk to your friend about his misogyny. A girl's car? What does that even mean? It's a car that girls like? If girls likes it, he can't like it? You know, the vast majority of girls like sex. By his own logic, if girls like sex, then it's a thing girls like, and therefore he can't like it or he won't be a macho he-man. I hope he enjoys his life of celibacy.

Worth noting... I saw a JACKED police officer in a white Fiat 500. Don't worry about anything unless you look like a total piece of potato getting in and out of the car.

Ah, lovely. He's going to become what the British people (such as you, Jason) call a "chav". Just great, because I already have a disdain for Corsa Bs (see far too many of them, especially on the street where I live). :indiff:

You, on the other hand, at least have some decency to not ruin your own dream car...

I don't even mind about the 70 bit.

My latest guilty pleasure: a Citroen H van, this one was built for a fire department and I want it badly.

Oh, I remember those. I have a scale model of one (it's a version used by a local beer company), and I really like it. These old Citroen vans may be slow as snails, but they are just so unique and full of character. And quirky, to boot.

On the topic of guilty pleasures, another Japanese one:

The Toyota Paseo. Yes, it is a coupe that betrays its class (95 hp is hardly my idea of a sporty coupe, but apparently Toyota didn't notice), but I just would love to own one. Maybe it's because the car would actually be affordable somewhat, unlike certain other coupes... And don't worry, if I do get one, I won't "chav" it to oblivion.

Sorry, but I saw a guy in a light blue 500 convertible and he looked massively homossexual. This coming from a guy that adores the 500, especially the TwinAir, in light blue.

And cleverly engineered. The metal is corrugated for increased body stiffness, ah I just love everything about it

With you on that one. They're cheap, and they're a bit of a blank canvas as far as design goes. Nothing special, but I bet they'd look great with a few simple tweaks. Wheels, suspension, a few choice interior bits and pieces etc.

Quite, you can easily use Starlet parts (same platform, remember) to tune the car into anything you'd like. You could even go crazy and try to create a Paseo Glanza V, I'm sure. But yes, the fact that it is very open for customizing makes the Paseo a rather interesting car to own...

Um.. All my cars :)

Especially this one lol, 50hp, 2 speed auto Daihatsu from the 70s/80s

And my daily I guess.. It was universally decided it was the most ugly car the world had ever seen when Toyota launched it and around here it's been a car for the handicapped and/or pensioners.. It's my little guilty pleasure on a daily basis :D

Sadly, most clean Paseos lately seem to be bought by people who rip the engine out and stick it in their Starlet instead.

That the exact opposite of what I thought would happen with Paseos; I thought people would rip the engines off their Starlets and put them on a Paseo... :boggled:

Really? Presumably replacing a smaller Starlet engine, that is... as my impression had been that people were hoiking out engines from Starlet Glanzas and putting them in Paseos.

Incidentally, I saw a Glanza the other day. Gave the driver a nod, and received one in return, because JDM-YO. I've never really thought about them before but it looked quite appealing. Not sure it counts as a legitimate guilty pleasure though, because hot hatches are generally too cool to be guilty about.

Edit: Though I've just checked the prices of them and they're a little less cool now. Approaching £5k is a bit much for a car like that.

Sadly not. The reason is that the Paseo's engine is the exact same as a Starlet's, only bored out to 1.5 litres instead of 1.3 and has a few minor additions to make it a bit peppier. And since it is just a Starlet engine, the turbo and all of the stuff to get it running from a Glanza can we swapped on to that engine instead and can also support aftermarket Glanza parts too. So you get all the perks of a bigger engine (less stress on the components, more torque, etc.) without any of the hassle of getting it fitted or worrying about what parts will/won't fit. It's a shame since Paseos seem like they'd be a more suited car for an engine like that, but apparently not many think that way.

There are a few who have stuck Glanza parts into one, but it is only a handful.

Yeah, they've been slowly creeping up, especially since I became interested in them about 2 years ago. You used to be able to get pretty good ones for about £2,500 - £3,000, but they've suddenly become quite scarce. You only either get mint, low mileage, unmolested examples for 4 or 5k, or absolutely ragged nuggets with questionable history for about £1,500 on Gumtree.

That makes sense.

A turbo'd Paseo would be quite appealing. Affordable way of going reasonably quickly in an unexpected package. Of course, the ultimate on that platform would be a turbocharged Sera. Butterfly doors for the win.

Ah, I see. The reasoning here is that it is easier to just bolt on some parts to the Paseo's engine, and get the same power without the hassle of tuning a smaller engine and spending more. A pity, I think at least some engines should be spared from that fate (same goes for the 3-rotor Wankel engines of the Eunos Cosmo).

Also, that part about Glanza prices makes sense, because most of the RHD examples have been tuned to oblivion. If you want an unmolested example, you will have to pay extra for it. Unless you want a car that has been trashed to an inch of its life, that's the only way to get a Glanza. Many JDM cars I would love to own have the same problem, the Starlet Glanza is just one example amogst many...

Of course, the ultimate on that platform would be a turbocharged Sera. Butterfly doors for the win.

Oh yes, that would be great, the Sera is another Toyota from the '90's that I would love to own. I mean, butterfly doors on a small car? Yes, please, and I'll have 5 of them. 👍

You lucky so and so. Never seen a single one, probably never will.

You're still both luckier than me, because the chances of seeing a Sera in Portugal are about one in a trillion. Unless there's someone with a very quirky taste... (and the patience to deal with the cumbersome process of importing a foreign car to Portugal...)

Given Japan's love of modifying stuff, I'd say there is more than likely a few turbo Seras knocking around. I know someone on the Starlet forum got one with that has his project goal, but it quickly went quiet.

A few people in the States have got GT Turbo/Glanza half cuts imported and stuck them into the Tercel which is also based on the same platform:

Given the bland styling, that'd probably work as an unexpected package too.

The Tercel is definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. In theory - and in practice, I expect - it's incredibly boring and nondescript, but it strikes me as being a car you could use every day without any thought whatsoever and any risk of it going wrong.

Exactly, though that's kind of what Toyota does best really; fairly bland, anonymous cars that will pull through no matter how worn down or old they are. But the thing is I can respect that. And there is something alluring about stuff like the Carina as well as the Corolla, especially this body style:

Toyota_Corolla_E100_Dreitürer_1.6_Si_Heck.JPG

My Starlet was probably the best example I could give. Only let me down once due to a snapped alternator belt (which had never been changed in its 120,000 mile life span) but other than that ran and worked perfectly. Until I got rear ended, but we'll gloss over that.
