You have the 1.5 don't you? I think those were one of the most efficient petrol engines Honda produced at the time. Official UK mpg for that model is 43. Even the base model 1.4 isn't as efficient. The 1.5 is one of the models I'm looking at to replace my car.
I've got a 1.6 Sohc non-vtec.

Ah right. My memory serves me badly. Well 38 USmpg is pretty good then. Certainly gives me confidence should I get the 1.5 then. Incidentally, the 1.5 is a VTEC but one tuned more for economy AFAIK, though still makes about 115bhp or something. Tuned a bit like the 1.3 they used to do in the EG hatch which in the UK was claimed to do over 60mpg.

Even better, I get that mileage at ~3800 rpm.

Wow. Sounds like your fifth gear is about the same as the one in the six speeds. 70mph is just around 3200rpm in sixth on an 8th gen. My worst mileage has been 23, best was 31 just last week. It might get just a little better with more miles and warmer weather.

Who needs VTEC? Toss that thing a header, a thinner headgasket, a mild cam and some springs on top of what you already have and it'd be making plenty of power. But of course making a basic super-D might be more expensive than replacing it with something better.

My car does 60 at 3200rpm. Not a fun, relaxing highway car.

I'm turning 3K flat at 60 MPH, which isn't too bad. I've been able to manage 28+ MPG with mostly city driving in the Celica, but I have no idea what the highway mileage looks like at 70+ MPH (when its turning over 4K).

So, with the gearing and such, I can cruise around town in 5th gear at, say, 1800 RPM. And still accelerate, uphills and so on.

Torque + light weight FTW.

Stupidly long 5th gear means I'm only pulling just about 2,300rpm at 60mph in the Saaaab. Not even enough for Turbo to kick in yoooo. And doing at least 36MPG, hooray!

I get 50mpg (UK gallons, obviously) on a motorway trip averaging 70mph. No idea what revs, as I don't have a rev counter :indiff: Base models for the win!

Whoa. How did I miss this?

Congrats on the new car, Cody. "driving like an ass."

Not enough for the turbo to kick in? My car with standard turbo can get 14psi at just over 2500rpm. I thought Saabs were low boost efficient designs..

You'll probably turn more around 3500 RPM at 70 MPH.

I near 200 miles on this tank so far, and that includes a night of my delivery driving, which isn't nice driving to say the least.

So far, I haven't driven the MR-S since I bought this damn thing. That's how much fun I've been having in it so far. Crazy how I can have fun in an FF now. Though I may take the MR-S out for a spin this week, but the snow tires are just a downer right now... not nearly as much snow as last year.

My mistake, meant to type "80 MPH."

Kinda odd that the Civic has stopped the love for the MR-S. Who'd have thought it was the Antichrist Honda that does it.

Well, I did drive the MR-S around today. Felt like a space ship between the power steering, snow tires, light clutch, and higher up shifter. I'll be driving it more once I can toss the top down more.

In other news, started to dismantle the front of the Civic to look over the wiring and fit the new fender a bit better. To my irritation, once I got the fender to fit to the door area better, it is too close to the hood, so I get to rubber mallet out a bit of damage to the mounting points on the frame.

Wiring for the HID lights is a bit of a mess too. Nothing bad, just excess wire and some electrical tape that looks, well, half-assed. So bought wiring, crimps, tape, and wire ducting to tuck it all in. Also took the front bumper off to repaint that red bit and fix the fog lights and hook them up properly.

Don't worry, the MR-S will get love soon too, with these.

Playing too much?

Please don't tell me the MR-S is just sittng in the garage, you HAVE to take it out once it gets hot :P

Broken casing? If it's putting out that much power, are you sure you want another stock box? You'll probably need a reinforced one... :ouch:

Hurm.

Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to get a new one, but I'm willing to bet that it won't be cheap.

Reading over everything Honda has revealed that I likely have a B16 unit, which have notoriously weak differentials. A proper GS-R or ITR setup should easily handle the power though.

Have you check all your engine mounts to make sure they're operational? I went all winter skipping across ice and asphalt and doing exactly what you described you did. I think something was compromised before your incident.

I do agree that the S80's innards were built tougher, but I'm not so sure about the Y21 being "notoriously weak".

Good thing you've got a reliable-as-dog-turds Toyota Feminine Special to carry you in the mean time.

Also, my point has been proven. Hondas suck you in. You've had this car for a month and you're already so in love with it that you're about to drop a stack on a new transmission.

EDIT: Also, I just watched a Victoria's Secret commercial with Heidi Klum featuring some fancy new bra. Nice.

 ...I should remember that page.

I'm in the middle of having a shop rebuild my gearbox, and wondering if there are any places nearby that will cryo-treat for me... after all the headache of tracking down individual gears, synchros and bearings from several different suppliers, I don't think I'll ever want to do this again.

I'm just gonna wait till I can get an ITR transmission. Should handle the power figures I am making with ease.

Also, MR-S is a champ in the snow with snow tires, and this picture was taken yesterday.
