BAC Mono: What am I missing?

Everyone seems to love this thing…a lot. I must be missing something with it. I should love it. Lightweight, Naturally Aspirated, center seat, and being able to see everything working. I just can’t though. The brakes aren’t effective in the slightest, it understeers at turn-in, then snap oversteer if you so much as look at the throttle on exit. Also, the claimed “downforce” is nonexistent. So, what am I missing with the Mono?
 
Have to agree with you on the oversteer, the only way I beat the weekly race was using racing mediums and traction control on 3/4 along with FEATHERING the throttle on corner exit. I did notice by the last lap I was feeling comfortable and with some digging into the suspension settings I’m sure it could be a blast to drive. Definitely a tricky car to handle for sure!

Had no issue on sports hard tyres for the weekly. Tons of fun with it.

Brake early turn on hit apex and steady throttle out with some nice slide.

Once you get the knack it’s a fun car to chuck around. I also consider myself to be a very average driver on GT too.
 
Yeah I quite like it, wheel spin in 3rd though so it’s all about throttle application. I dont think it’s an aero car though, it’s got no front wing and a fairly cosmetic rear wing
 
It does have downforce, you can see it in the settings. It doesn't feel like it because of low weight. In GT7 less weight usually just means less grip so light cars don't feel agile, they feel floaty. A customisable LSD can help, though. Decreasing initial torque and braking sensitivity will make it feel more agile. Running acceleration sensitivity at 15-20 can help with stability on corner exit. If it's too difficult to drive, increasing the initial torque will make it smoother at the expense of some agility.
 
I will post my suspension settings for the Mono, I had little problems with the handling with my setup...
 
It's a fun quirky and tricky car to drive although I like the X-Bow more. Brake early and go easy on the throttle.
 
Add some ballast to the front to compensate for the low front downforce, it will help and also be easy on the throttle when exiting corners

This is my setup, i use it for the 30 minute race at Le Mans, I find a 52/48 balance good for driving stability, the extra nose ballast compensates for the light front downforce.

There were complaints about the Mono when it appeared in a past weekly, mostly about terrible ffb on the car. I agree with this.

In general it has less grip than I'd expect from something so small, light and track oriented. I find it manageable if I don't drive it with the mindset that it's a grippy, darty, agile trackday weapon with invincible traction, but instead treat it as an overpowered road car with more engine than chassis.

That said, the ffb on this car is a problem for me because I get very little warning when the traction is starting to be overwhelmed, so when it starts oversteering I'm already behind the situation and I'm not getting enough feedback to tell me if I need large, quick corrections or small, gentle ones. Instead I just end up learning where I tend to fall off the circuit and just use less throttle there.

To me it feels fun but broken.
 
Ok so for my set up I use…

16” wheels for the extra sidewall, this eliminates some of the overtly stiffness.

I upgrade the breaks to slotted/drilled for the extra stopping. Also add the break pads (I can’t remember if it already comes with it)

I use Sports Hard tyre (medium and soft is too much of a cheat mode)

No other upgrades.

As for the set up I only add 0.5° of extra camber to the rear.

Everything else is stock.

Driving the car takes a light touch, but can be very fun. You should get 1:53’s on SH and well below 1:50’s (around 1:48) on SS.

Here is a full race I just did for fun. I’m not the best driver by far, I’m mediocre at best :lol:

Added my settings page, as you can see pretty standard.

Thought I’d whack some Racing Tyres on as others seem to be using them. Overkill in my view. But for the giggles…

Interesting. Would you tell us what race difficulty you're on. Just asking as my impression was, SM tires aren't exactly a cheat code here when running on hard difficulty. I had sub 1.50 laps ( FL 1:48 ) consistently and didn't get into the lead before the final lap.

Sorry for the late reply.

I think those specific laps are on easy, hence the quick scramble to first place.

I think cheat code is a little strong on my part, it’s more of a cover for most people to just whack on whatever tyres are the best.

This is why I love races with wear, as it makes tyre selection more of a consideration.

I’d say it’s certainly doable on hard with SH tyres, maybe fighting for first around the chicane of death. If I get a chance this week to run it again I’ll check the difficulties and see what I get. As I say I’m not the fastest by any measure, others will find it easier.

As for the car, it’s a blast and covering its quirks with sticky tyres just doesn’t seem to do the car justice and it certainly bids the fun that can be had with its ass hanging out around the slower bends.

Well, that depends on the event specific rules.
And when it is strcitly allowed it by definition is not cheating. The choice will be pretty narrow anyway in most cases, either by the rules or by a PP limit.
 
IIRC for the Trial Mountain 1 hour race I had to increase TCS a couple of notches. I found no reason to rev this car super high. The tach starts flashing at about half of max RPM and I shifted even before it flashed.
I never have issues with the Mono at all, save for the fact it's not just blazingly fast.

Yeah. I remember that one. Track kinda sucked unfortunately but can’t always have it all, I suppose?
