Base Models? What does that mean?

Here's the caption on the GT6 website.

Paint
In addition to car body paint supplied in the colour of the cars you have acquired, in the future there will also be special paint items that will be distributed in online events. In addition, it is also possible to paint wheels purchased in custom parts.
Hmm well that's another kick in the nuts. Another reason to justify me renting the game first.

Hey guys...

Looks like I missed the party on this but I have a question as well. I am also unaware if this has been answered or not, but i really dont have the time this morning to do much searching.

My question is, what exactly is this car:
9Audi R18 TDI Prototype ’11

I am unsure whether or not it is the release R18 where Dr. Ulrich, Tom, Dindo, Allan, Andre... the whole gang and stuff were there to walk it in..

To me it's fine if we get this and it has the ability to be painted. That is a plus actually for me. Im just wondering whether it is this one or something else I have yet to see.
I'm pretty confident that is the car. We should be able to change the number and paint it. Which is pretty awesome for those in leagues etc. No two would be alike.

That's where I want to see it go. More towards leagues because some of us actually spend the time thinking of how the game works rather than just tooling with numbers. We are playing with the cars more in depth than some of the PD guys I think at times..

As someone mentioned, 'base' model is just a way of adding to the car list by giving us the exact same car but without a paintjob, sponsors etc. So, the Autobacs Garaiya Base '08 is exactly the same as the car in GT5 that has logos, stickers etc. TBH, it's a sad way to add to the car list. In reality, we are not getting 123 unique premium models, we are getting 95 (I may have miscounted, not sure) Also, 15th Anniversary Editions don't count as separate cars so don't even get me started on that

It's entirely possible there may be some licensing issue here. May be part of the agreement with various racing groups that you can't paint over their sponsor liveries so a comprimise might be to add base models. I could understand it from that perspective, but likely we'll never know the full truth.

You could be right but it's disingenuous of PD imo to count them as 'new' premium models when all they've done is remove logos.

Agreed 100% but then again so is having a couple of hundred S2000's...well you know the rest:eek:. Par for the course as they say:lol:..

Has anybody thought about this...

PD has once again "promised" a very ambitious DLC schedule. They have also used the phrase "special paint chip" for the anniversary cars.

What if the base models are to be used with "special paint chip" liveries sold as DLC? To me this makes perfect sense.

Look at other racing games, you have a race car thats the same but three different 'teams'. They only differ in livery. Rather than PD adding every GT3 car or GT500, he left it to base models you can paint, and possibly in the future apply a 'special paint chip' to. Imo, it leaves the possibility of having liveries for download only in the name of paint chip. Perhaps a seasonal event with a certain race car to unlock a team paint scheme? Maybe even manufacturers will get involved and make special 'paint chips' for dlc? Ya never know.

It means more redundant and fake duplications to the car list. A practice of which Gran Turismo is infamous for.

These base models might provide some interesting options that we don't properly anticipate. At least the premium/standard duplicates are gone.

Well, except a "livery paint chip" would have to be locked to a specific model; it couldn't be applied to things of varying shapes without turning into a mess. Something that fits a GT500 Skyline won't fit a road 370Z, for example. So at that point, it'd be pretty silly to call it a "chip" if it only applies to a specific car, like a SuperGT team currently not included; PD could just create said car and continue to bump up the car count, since they would've already had to design the livery for this "chip".

I could very well be wrong, and we might get a livery editor at some point during GT6's life. But considering it's one of the most-demanded features, and PD has shown they obviously have no problem announcing features that won't ship with the game, but only have a nebulous "soon" attached to them, I'm not holding my breath, because they would've said something by now.

Thats what I meant. A 'chip' for a specific car/cars. That chip may be a livery for download or gained through a seasonal with a certain car. Say Nissan GTR GT3 Time Trial, unlockes a couple GTA liveries or whatever you can apply to your "base model" GT3 GTR. Just my thought, not saying thats what will happen.
