Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

Okay we had Baron bring us some sensible machines with a front wheel drive road car and a one make racer based on it, which was a mid engined rear drive track car.

And now I have to readdress the balance in my trademark sarcastic sadist manner. :mischievous:

Take it away, myself. :sly:

Congratulations @Vic Reign93!!

So what do you bring to the table for all of us this week?

It is....

The 1986 RUF BTR!!!

Yep, the car that came before the Yellowbird is this weeks pick.

This weeks Playing with TT’s event will be at Apricot Hill Raceway when Baron sets it all up. :)

And remember folks, Understeer is when you see the tree you’re about to hit and Oversteer is when you can’t see the tree you’re about to hit, I imagine the latter happening more.

This BTR is the wide body (to GT2 or sports car enthusiasts quite obviously), that may or may not be why I prefer it to the CTR. Driving just feels a bit better. It is a lot of fun on the Matterhorn tracks, which is where I/we got started (Gornergrat League if I recall). Then about three years ago I started with timed runs on Nordschleife, but my best lap is still from last December. Perhaps I should put that one to the stock yard and start with a fresh engine.

Greetings all!

Fiji was amazing. Two weeks in a local fisher village just outside Suva with no internet, barely any lighting and only the bare essentials really shows just how little it takes for people to thrive happily, right?

I returned to NZ at midnight, got home at 2am. Im shattered. @Baron Blitz Red and / or @Vic Reign93 could you hold down the fort one more week? I'll keep tabs on the goings on now, but won't be able to join this Tuesday due to recovering / some schooly stuff that I totally didnt forget about in Fiji...

Good to be back!

Do try not to be so Ruf with Megane's Trophy...

Well playing catch up again, it's time for 2 reviews in 1. Oh so long ago, I got the opportunity to rule this thread with an iron fist... and my first forcible action was to give myself my very first COTW pick of 2017. Since most of the minions here have had more than one pick so far, I chose a very Canadian concept... the Double Double. Usually that refers to coffee with two creams and two sugars. But here at COTW HQ, that means 2 cars with 2 drivetrains. They just happen to have the same name.

DlvCf1x.jpg

First off, the Megane Trophy RS. Those of you who know me, also know of my disdain for the FF drivetrain in general. There have been some surprise Sleepers for me that are FF's, but not so much for the most part. My thinking this time 'round was to showcase WHY Renault Sport would take the not so humble FF hot hatch and give it a different flavour in race trim. ;)

Why "not so humble"... well, in my research I found that for the "normal" FF cars (not race cars, not tuner cars), this Megane Trophy RS was the second most powerful FF car in all of GT6. The most powerful FF car actually shocked me, especially considering just how bad it's older sibling was. But we're not here to chat about that one, are we?

Armed with 261 hamsters that use 265 pounds of steroids (torque) to push around a 1,387 kilo body, this hot hatch is a force to be reckoned with. But with quite a few powerful FF cars, there is one major problem... weight distribution. Even though this Trophy Megane has a four banger, it still suffers with that fate. Oh well, at least it's somewhat attractive and has 19" rims to boot. Enough to be a record holder at the famous Ring known as the Green Hell, aka Nordschleife. Record holder yes, Sleeper no. Not in my hands anyways. Neutral status from yours truly.

mFHJdD5.jpg

Now THIS is more like it... I absolutely adore the MR version which just happens to be in racing trim! Perfectly balanced, and well handling on any track I've had it on, it is simply a Sleeper and a Keeper of a car. I really wish that @McClarenDesign would have been around for this one. His disdain for French cars may have taken a hit with this beauty. It is my #2 most used car mileage wise... 5,784 km's worth of experience with her. Had GT6 kept a track of online wins, it would definitely be in the top 3. Yes, I LOVE this car!!!

5mJ1vs4.jpg

Ahh, the Big Turbo RUF... yet another former record holding car from my most beloved German car maker. A true Sleeper, even true car guys confuse this with a "normal" 930 based 911. Until you get one blowing your doors off that is. Another car you have to keep under control, as it can never be tamed. Not for the faint of heart, let alone the skill challenged. This can and will kill you. Adding to the test is the fact it's a rear engined monster to boot. Widow maker to some, Sleeper and a Keeper for me!

Cheers

Lots of mid-engined competition here, most notably the Ferrari 512 BB '76. That'd make a great duel. I vote sleeper. Can't go wrong with a RUF.

I asked @Vic Reign93 to hold down the fort for one more week, but haven't heard from him. If he maintains radio silence till tomorrow, then I'll pick a car and set up an event, just won't be able to attend Tuesday.

Rejoice, for I have brought a winner for us. :sly:

Congratulations @Draggon!!

You have this weeks pick for yourself, so what’s it gonna be??

FCBE5F35-B8B5-4C3D-B64E-69780CCE1503.png

It’s The 2001 Honda Dualnote!!

It’s not alone this week either as it has an american twin in the form of The 2002 Acura DN-X Concept!!

Yep, we’re seeing double this week with 2 hybrid sports cars with V6’s and electric motors powering us to the podium.

I’ll leave the TT set up to @Nismonath5, but aside from that, that’s everything sorted for this week. 👍

And with that, comes my official retirement from GT6! I've accidentally killed off my last DS3 controller and actually had to borrow a friend's to access GT6 in the past two days. But that ends this evening as she's coming by to reclaim her controller.

I just wanted to say it's been a complete honour getting to know all of you these past few years!!! Thank you for helping me in my journey of trying to improve my racecraft... without ALL of you, I don't think I would have come so far, let alone improve as much as I have! You people have been absolutely terrific, and I truly hope to see you all on the other side... the PS4 Gt Sport side that is!!!

Thank you and Cheers to all!!!

Once I get GTS I'll be over there but for now I'll still be with GT6.

Also which brings up a question, do we want to continue COTW on GT6 for the time being or give GTS a few months to update the car list before starting the group there?

My thoughts exactly, give GTS a few months to iron out all the major bugs first. Mind you, with no PS4 yet I wont be joining y'all... yet.

Damn, BBR, I just am at a loss for words. It's not like this was not expected, I guess I'm just sad to see you leave us. I know you're aware you've been my primary competitor ( and inspiration ) at COTW. I've learned so much racing with you. I'm not great, but so much better than when I joined our club a couple years ago. The TT battles we had, with .01 separating us were great fun, not to mention some epic competiton we've had on the track. The 15 lap battle you and I had at Spa in the VW ( on your birthday? ) is perhaps the best time I've had in all of GT.

Thanks again, brother, it's been a grand time. I'll be looking for you when I step up to a new console!

Trust you me, if I hadn't 🤬 up my last DS3 trying to fix it, I'd still be here. Tuesday was a mixed bag of emotions... GT Sport brought the same excitement felt by countless generations of kids looking forward to play with their new toys. Tuesday night brought the realisation of just how much COTW meant to me. I was lost to be honest. How many nights of great racing with friends have we all spent together??? Big hole there now. :guilty:

Thanks for the compliments Ash... means tonnes and it's also right back at ya. I still have the replay of the 15 lap "Spa Day" that was made possible thanks to you people honouring me HOF wise. Yourself and quite a number of others have provided way fun memories that I'm looking forward to reviving as soon as possible. PLEASE hurry people!!!

Cheers

Baron, I gotta thank you for all you've done not only for the club, but for me as a driver.
You were among the first to really challenge me, giving me a benchmark to shoot for, a rival to defeat, and a friend to spar with. Some of our battles have been the stuff of legend, and I'll forever cherish the replays I've collected over the year and a bit. Doing this fortnight's batch of Seasonal Events, it saddened me to realize that this was the last time I'd see your name pop up on the friends' leader board, but it was also great fun giving your ghost one last run for its money (And I'm not done yet! ;))

Here's to the future, may there be many more races between us! Cheers, man!

I hear ya there! That's the fantastic part of COTW... over the years, I've had pitched battles with almost everyone here. The names are just too many to list, as we've seen people come and go, as well as having the names of the regular crowd etched into memory. Everyone has improved... everyone has a shot of winning. We all keep pushing each other (figuratively, and in a good way) to do better. It's infectious. And I love it!!!

I remember in the heydays where we had almost too many people trying to join our races... we needed two rooms at points! The vast majority of times all the names had "smiley faces" beside them... you people EARNED that Friend symbol. Being in races where my heart is pounding, hands are sweating and I'm giggling like a little kid at the same time... THAT'S what it was all about!!! I hope it continues as well.

Making the jump to the next generation is expensive. I just forked out quite a bit to get there. I get that, as personally I question my sanity for laying more cash for gaming than some of the real cars I've had in the past. I also said the same thing when I first got the PS3!!! But, in the long run it was all made worth while with the memories alone. Hopefully the majority would agree on that point. I know it's a big ask... but it would be really nice to see all of you on the "other side" as well. THANK YOU ALL

Cheers

Right, I'm finally back! Let's get back to work!

This week, we'll be doing my birthday car. PD obviously knows me well, because for my 18th I was given..

maxresdefault.jpg

The 1993 Nissan Silvia S14 K's AERO!!!!!

Rear wheel drive, turbocharged, Japanese.. Me likey!

While the S14's visuals took a while to grow on me, the package was always appealing! It also seems like the sort of car that could make for some intense racing action! This week's Playing With TT's will take place at the Suzuka East Circuit. Hope to see you all again on Tuesday! (If you're not all caught up in GTS, that is..)

...evidently, you lot have been caught up in GTS. I recall reading about the same thing happening when the Sierra time rally was added. Regardless, here's my review!

Special K

Aero, aero, aero, wot do we have 'ere... (Not funny? Try saying it like a British police officer...)

City of Arts and Sciences - Night_2.jpg

The S14 is one of those cars that is so commonly seen with some form of visual modification, be it paint, bodywork, rims, etc. That when you see one stock, it's surprising!

This was basically my reaction to seeing my K's Aero when it was gifted for my birthday. I've seen so many as time attack cars, drift cars, even hillclimb cars, that when I saw what a virgin S14 looked like, I was a bit taken back. I thought the front was actually a bit on the ugly side. Maybe that's why not many are stock anymore. ;)

Regardless, there are some pretty funky positives to the Silvia. Firstly, it features an SR20DET motor, which is currently the one motor I've had the most experience with, both mechanically and in racing. As I referenced before, it's also got quite the versatility, with plenty of tuning potential allowing it to take on whatever event you enter it into! And who can forget the 500+bhp LM Edition from GT1!

nissan_silvia_s14_lm_ediion_by_submaniac93-d9ht0x4.jpg

I had this car in GT1, but in green. Called it "Snot Ball". I was 8.

Anyways, aside from that long-in-the-past race model, I haven't really been too involved with the Silvia platform, though perhaps maybe I should. The K's is the turbocharged variant, boasting not too much more than 210bhp, which is a respectable figure and enough to be fun without feeling sluggish. When racing casually, it's handling is relatively simple and predictable. It's when you actually want to win a race that it starts to really show you what it can do!

City of Arts and Sciences - Night.jpg
City of Arts and Sciences - Night_1.jpg

It will become extremely tail happy, demanding only the most delicate throttle control and careful handling. Otherwise, you'll be crossed up coming out of every corner you turn! Which brings me to my next point - At least it'd make a decent drift car! I guess there's a reason it's so popularly seen among drifting crowds and events... Of course, the oversteer can be easily addressed in the form of 1 TCS, but where's the fun in that? Here's a car you really gotta work to drive well, and TCS just makes it too easy. Turn it off, push this thing to it's limits and you'll no doubt be rewarded, in both enjoyment and experience!

It's also dirt cheap, has a usability that spans an impressive range of racing applications, is a Nissan, and provided some epic action on Tuesday! It may not be detailed, but don't be so shallow! This one's a sleeper! 👍

Next car coming up real soon...

Alrighty, so I've been so busy with my last ever week of college that I didn't pick a winner or anything. I've also been a bit busy with some Hooncorp related matters...

Well it’s not all bad, You can still contribute to this week’s car on GT Sport as the LM55 is on the game in both its standard Group X form and in the homologated Group 1 form.

Ok granted money is a tiny bit harder to get on there and they are quite expensive, but it’s something worth looking at. ;)

True enough, as I do have the GR.1 version already...

As for the money side of it, it's not really that hard tbh. Granted I did have a head start with the open beta, and the pre-ordered deluxe version to boot, but the payouts aren't that bad depending on what you're doing. No, it's nothing like the GT6 Seasonals, but I'm not struggling either.

On the flip side of things however... I really concentrated on the Campaign mode and what's stupidly easy is getting cars!!! Today is day 14, and I have 89 cars in the garage!!! Yes, some are doubles, and I even have 2 sets of triplets!

It's just not the same... I miss the racing part of COTW!!! And with this week's victim, it should be nothing but memorable!!! Trust you me, I'm jealous!

Cheers

LM55 summary
Good stuff: Rapid acceleration, sheer speed, and oh the noise!!!

Not so good: Rubbish brakes, sketchy handling.

Review to follow, just thought I'd stir up a bit of discussion. This thread's been a bit in the quiet side as of late..

(Blows dust off)

Gee, been awhile since i’ve done this whole review thing.

Welp, back to it. :P

We start with another R32 Skyline, but this one is about as low spec as you can get on GT6 for an R32.

Yep, it’s the 1991 GTS25 Type S, a non turbo, two wheel drive version with around 180hp stock.

Specifically, it’s from a 2.5 in-line 6 matched up to a 5 speed gearbox.

The lack of turbos and 4wd does make the Type S lighter by 160kgs compared to and same year R32 GT-R, but interestingly the Type M which is the turbo version of the Type S is lighter still by 60kgs. :odd:

So both are drift enthusiasts picks because of the decent power, modest weight (1,320 for the Type S, 1,260 for the Type M) and rear drive antics they can bring.

.
.
.
.

Okay, time to address the elephant in the room that is the stock sound for the Type S, it’s not a 6 cylinder, it’s sounds like a V8.

‘But Vic’ I hear you cry, isn’t that a good thing??

It would, IF it was a V8, to coin a term I made, it’s overcylindered.

Secondly, Why would you want your “V8” to only have 180hp stock?

That’s the Type S’s biggest blackmark against it, among many of other cars that got affected by that sound update. 👎

Although if you fully tune the engine, but leave the stock exhaust on, you’ll have around 315hp which makes about the same as an early 2000’s Camaro V8.

But the R32 in 2 wheel drive was to its credit a very capable handling car due to having a well designed chassis and on race night it handled very nicely on the Comfort Soft tyres.

On its own, I’m willing to overlook the sound issue and call it a decent Neutral.

And now here comes the big but..

BUT.. :P

When you start to compare it to other cars, it suddenly becomes overshadowed by the 1989 version of the Type M which is lighter, more powerful at over 210hp AND is cheaper by 600crs at 23,850.

So get it if you want something different, get the Type S, if you want the same car with extra boost and weight loss for less money, get the ‘89 Type M.

Next up, some french twins and ones more racy than the other. :sly:

The 2011 Renault Megane R.S Trophy is the one we’ll start with and it follows the modern Hot Hatch checklist.

2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine? Check.
Turbocharged? Check.
Front wheel drive? Check.
6 speed gearbox? Check.
Over 250hp? Check, it’s 261 stock.
Tested at the Ring? Oh definitely.

In fact this one of 500 model once held the record for the quickest Front wheel drive car around the Ring at just over 8 mins, back in 2011 that was very impressive for a front wheel drive.

Fast forward to 2017 however and that record is now under the 7:45 mark courtesy of the Honda Civic Type R at 7:43.8.

But I digress.

The Megane R.S is oddly equipped with CS tyres stock when it should’ve been SH tyres, combined with a weight distribution of 63/37 IIRC makes it quite reluctant to to turn in at first, but it will bite down with a little encouragement.

The gearing unlike most hot hatches is quite short so while on tracks like Le Mans you’ll be hitting the limiter, you’ll be able to use all 6 gears to your hearts content on shorter tracks.

I’d say it’s a Sleeper despite not having SH tyres stock as the Renault Sport guys reworked the chassis brilliantly. 👍

And now here comes the racy twin and is that a wing she’s holding?? :D

The Megane Trophy is completely different to the road car, it’s mid engined for a kick off, the power is sent to the rear wheels, it’s got Gullwing Doors and it’s built on a Tubular frame.

The engine is a Nissan 3.5 V6 making almost 360hp stock and thanks to the tube frame and other weight savings the car weighs a rather impressive 955kgs, especially compared to the road cars 1,387kgs.

With big sticky slicks all around, Race spec brakes and suspension and a big rear wing, The Megane Trophy is a cornering machine and with a smooth powerband the racing was close and intense.

Few others say it’s a Sleeper because it’s easy to drive fast, That’s true, but it’s also relativity cheap at 100k for what it can offer.

And you can get a Base Model if you want your own personal touch on display.

Verdict: Sleeper :)👍

Now for what was my pick for when @Nismonath5 was soaking up the sun was the RUF BTR or to give this write up another title.

Why Does Vic Hate Tyres and Us??

The BTR is the less powerful, but equally unstable brother the CTR “YellowBird” and with nearly 370hp from a 3.4 turbo Flat 6 pushing 1,180kgs of car, it straight away tells you one thing.

You’re Gonna Have A Bad Time. :mischievous:

Everyone at some point in a race was getting sideways to better or worse extents, it’s a car that in order to turn a corner in you have to turn in the opposite direction after the initial turn in.

The BTR and CTR actually benefited from the previously mentioned sound as they somewhat have a sound with some Flat 6’ness to it.

It’s quick, but it’s obviously got an edge to its handling (Understatement of the decade there Vic.;) ) and really it’s not one for the faint hearted (Close Second on that statement.).

I always say Sleeper because cars like the BTR are fun IF you can handle them (Big enough If for ya?:sly:) and that particular record ain’t being changed today.

Verdict: Sleeper 👍

Now we’re up to the Honda Dualnote and it’s american twin, the Acura DN-X.

(2hrs and 30 mins since you started this write up Vic, seriously need to stop procrastinating on these write ups.)

This duel was one of both comedy and intrigue, on the comedy side you had Rob flub names a few times and we all started intentionally doing it to each other and the cliff notes version of the story is this, I ended up being called Vinnie and G_Asher became B_Asher etc etc.

The intrigue was these two supposedly identical cars being quite different.

The Acura had a tiny power and PP advantage, But the Honda’s V6 could rev to 8K Rpm where the Acura could only rev to 7K.

Both cars can’t be painted, but the Acura has an optional red paint job available.

With both cars having identical gearing, the higher reving Honda had a higher top speed potential compared to the Acura, but the Acura felt a little bit quicker in acceleration.

Wasn’t much difference in handling mind you, although the Acura might have ever so slightly less grabby brakes, but i’m reaching at this point.

No difference in price either, But it’s 750,000cr to buy one so the 3/4 million question is this, Which one is better?

If stock numbers are your thing, it’s the Acura.

If high speeds are your thing, take the Honda as the extra 1000rpm stock will mean you won’t run out of gears as quick.

Want my COTW opinion? flip a coin on it, whatever it lands on, that’s the correct answer.

As for these supposedly identical cars, they both get the Neutral verdict, decent hybrid sports cars, but the entrance fee is big.

(Up to 3 hours now Vic)

Now we’re back at Nissan and back in a car that’s well used in the drift community

The Nissan Silvia S14, we have a 1993 K’s Aero S14 for this review and this in terms of stats, is almost identical to the Type M R32, minus 2 cylinders.

The SR20 2.0 litre turbo 4 makes over 215hp, just a few more than the Type M while weighing 40kgs less.

Revved to over 7000 rpm but peak power was made at 6000 and dropped off afterwards so some earlier shifting was needed.

But aside from that, a good portion of what I said about the Type S’s handling can be said about the S14, tiny more understeer, but more power to help rectify that.

So it’s a decent car to call a Sleeper,👍 but even this car has the same problem as the Type S, there’s a car that’s better for less money, lighter, about 10hp less and it’s also from Nissan.

For under 23k you can grab a former COTW pick in the form of the 180SX S13 hybrid, The Sileighty.

(Holy 🤬 i’m really putting in the time for this one.)

Finally, this weeks machine which is the quad rotored, 4wd Futuristic LMP racer from Mazda, The LM55 VGT.

Now normally I would slam my head on the nearest available desk at this point because the LM55 doesn’t have posted stats for power or weight, But happily @CORRUPTEDDISC Visions of Tomorrow series for GT helped crack this particular nut.

It weighs 830kgs and after an oil change it makes 832hp so say hello to 1000hp per tonne as well.

Now the biggest weakness of the LM55 wasn’t even part of it originally, I’m of course talking about the update which gave the majority of race cars a large amount of camber and toe which affected the braking ability and handling.

Zero those settings out and the things a beauty to drive, stable and responsive at high speed, great traction coming out of low speed turns and with 8 gears to play with, you’ll always be in the powerband to let that quad rotor scream.

It’s quite overkill for its power level as in low drag tune, speeds of up to 290mph are possible.

So to judge the LM55 on its original merits and not on the settings that update brought (which to be quite frank, can go french kiss an angle grinder.) It’s a rather brilliant if slightly overkill LMP racer which everyone should have.

Verdict: Sleeper :)👍

So here I am, near as makes no difference 4 hours later i’m back up to date.

Let’s try not have this happen again eh Vic? :D
