Beater or Sleeper? GT6 Car of the Week Thread

Redefining Zoom Zoom...

W43SfvE.jpg

I remember first getting this in GT6... awestruck is a good word to describe how I felt. Well, over in the world of GT Sport, the feeling hasn't waned, it's only gotten stronger. There's a track called Autodrome Lago Maggiore GP, one of the best tracks ever created by Polyphony Digital. Period. The sensations that's evoked here is almost as mind blowing as the LM55 is fun to drive!!!

VEF7E1p.jpg

GT Sport has redefined Gran Turismo in one way above all others before it. The sense of elevation... and the drops in elevation can be felt in your stomach. It is pronounced. Wait till you get there, if you haven't already. In the VGT classes of cars, be it Gr.1 or Gr. X, the speeds achieved by the 8 speed gearbox are felt and heard way better than before... and I don't have a fancy 4k tv or better. I'm still with the 1080p LCD job I've had for a while now. But the differences between the PS3 and the PS4 Pro are incomparable, enough so that it's hard to describe.

One feature of GT Sport, is the Livery editor... no more plain jane LM55's here, that will confuse people in the who is who department without having names above your cars. The step up of just painting yours cars is almost secondary, if not tertiary now. Personalisation is way beyond easy here. My livery is beyond simplistic compared to others I've seen, but hey, it's still mine. And it's still a Sleeper and a Keeper, even though it's a VGT. This is a very special Zoom Zoom... made even better now thanks to an upgrade in technology!

Happy Birthday in advance @Racer283 !!!

What a great car, one of the few Vision cars I like. Its surprisingly good on SS tires, although lap times suffer quite a bit, it tames the twitchy handling when the suspension settings are left stock. An added bonus is that can get down to 584pp with power limiter and ballast so it's eligible for many career events. It's quite versatile in the career mode and can do the 24 minutes of the 'Ring without stopping, obliterates the competition at Spa and can also give a relatively easy win at Sarthe. But for me its the versatility that makes it an overwhelming sleeper!

Tuesday races were fun and yielded some good competition. As we discovered, neither the Peugeot VGT, the Peugeot 908 hdi fap, nor the (once) awesome 787Bb could stop the zoom zoom. 👍

Since we were racing on halloween, I painted mine orange expecting to see some in black. Nope, zip, nada. I had to gorge myself on candy corn afterwords to make myself feel better.

Rotary Revelation!!!

High Speed Ring.jpg

Waiting keenly for the green!

The Mazda LM55 was Mazda's christmas present to all. A modern incarnation of a rotary powered LeMans weapon! Bearing the same #55 used by the legendary 787B, but sadly not the same livery, just looking at it, there's instantly an expectation for it to be a real monster!!!

Needless to say, it has some highs and lows.

Firstly, let's look at what you get. For $1,000,000 which is, of course, the standard price for a Vision Gran Turismo car, you get an unspecified power or weight number (Feel free to enlighten me, someone in the know), but my guess is under 1000kgs easily, and probably around 600bhp. That's about the same stats as the 787B, so it wouldn't surprise me. Anyways, off the line the LM55 is mega quick. It has an 8 speed gearbox, and it rips through those first four gears in well under five seconds, by which point you're already well on your way past 200kmh. Basically, when the green flag drops, you'd better be quick or you'll find yourself on the limiter not once, but four times!!!

It's also quite noisy. Not uncommon for a rotary, it screams, and really sounds like it's working hard. It sounds good! A bit tedious at 12:30am when you're trying to sneak in a few laps without waking up the household, but good!

Cornering ability is where we start to go from good to meh. As @Vic Reign93 mentioned, when Polyphony ruined every racecar's standard settings, it became a real animal to drive without tuning, and that point was proven. It was terrible to drive, always unsettling around corners, smacking the wall and causing chaos when trying to battle a close, fierce race! And then we get to the LM55's weakest point, which I believe is the brakes. No matter what corner you're on, they feel much less effective than you might expect. Even Mid-Field, with a slight uphill towards turn 1 that assists in reducing speed, saw numerous drivers go straight off and tap the wall!

Tsukuba Circuit_1.jpg
Tsukuba Circuit_3.jpg

Offroad excursions and overshooting corners. Common mistakes behind the wheel of the LM55

However, neutralising the toe angles and cranking in some camber the right way completely transforms the LM55. After a slippery race at Tsukuba, I allowed drivers to fix the suspension settings before going for another run around Tsukuba, and that simple tweak made the car so much more agreeable in turns. The brakes are still a weak point, but at least you can drive it fast, even if you're going to get out-braked by anything else on the track!

It's a blast to drive. I only wish I could have mine in a 787B livery... apparently that's the most popular livery in GTS at the moment, no surprises.
Back soon with the new car!

Alright, this week's pick comes courtesy of our resident GT4 car reviewer!

Congratulations @fabinator6!!!!!

It's the 2001 Toyota Will VS!!!!!

Boasting styling reminisent of a stealth fighter... while being a seemingly boring old hatchback. Another perfect candidate for Beater or sleeper!
This week's Playing With TT's will be at the prestegious Mount Panorama circuit!

On another note, COTW is approaching it's 200th week on Gran Turismo 6. This is, of course, an epic milestone and should be celebrated! I'm open to ideas as to how we should celebrate, though. Most likely @McClarenDesign will get the pick, being the creator and for the most part leader of this madhouse. But if anyone has any ideas on things to do to mark the big 200, feel free to share!

For $1,000,000 which is, of course, the standard price for a Vision Gran Turismo car, you get an unspecified power or weight number (Feel free to enlighten me, someone in the know)

According to the stats of the Group 1 version that I have in GT Sport...

641 hp @ 8,500 rpm
416.6 ft-lb @ 6,500 rpm
4WD
Naturally Aspirated
187 inches in length
80.1 inches in width
33.9 inches in height
1,940 lbs

The Group X version lists 791 hp @ 8,500 rpm and 514.9 ft-lb @ 6,500 rpm. Those stats are from the dealership, as I don't own one yet.

Cheers

But if anyone has any ideas on things to do to mark the big 200, feel free to share!

We could do a mini endurance race for the 200th week or we can race the Audi, Nissan, and Toyota LMPs and see which is beater or sleeper of the group. Just some ideas I have.

I do like the idea of a race, however we'd need the attendance, venue and cars to make it exciting... Suggestions regarding the track, cars, and conditions also appreciated! :D

By the way, vids from last week's racing!

It seems like our group has gotten fairly small in the recent months and now GTS is out most everyone has gone over there. Hopefully we get more people to join sometime and continue to grow.

If you wouldn't mind giving me a quick rundown on what the group does and what time and days the group meets up I might be interested in joining. I don't play to much online so im not in many groups at the moment. I'm in the US on Eastern Standard Time GT6 only.

Each week a different car is picked and members give them a damn good thrashing, then talk about what they like or don't like about the car. Racing is clean but competitive, with allowance for minor bumps and bashes (and the occasional collision which is sometimes unavoidable, that's motorsport!) The main goal of this club is to get people driving what you might not normally drive, or cars that may be overlooked.

Meetings are Tuesdays 10pm CST and Saturday 3pm CST. Lobbies are usually hosted by myself or @Vic Reign93 and last about an hour and a half, depends on how good the racing is! We like to run a relaxed atmosphere, so take things lightly, don't get annoyed if you have one or two bad races, we all do at some point! You are welcome to drive any car assuming it fits the PP requirements, which are always set to the car of the week's PP level AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. Other than that usual rules apply, don't be a dick, try your best to keep the racing clean-ish, and don't get angry if the car does meet the wall.

Oh, and there is a helping of banter thrown in too. Just a heads up!

Sounds like fun. What are the rules for the cars and or race? Like is Tuning allowed or is it completely stock other that an oil change? What tire compound are allowed? Also what group should I look for on GT6 so I can join.

Thanks for the information and I like that you guys drive the cars most people don't touch.

Tuning is for the most part disabled, though sometimes we allow it to spice things up a little, or maybe the car's just so bad it needs better brakes, suspension, etc. As for tyres, we just run with whatever compund the car comes with, which is usually sport hards for road cars and race hards for racecars. However we have a rule in play, that means if you win a race, you must downgrade a tyre compound. (RH tyres become SS, SS becomes SM, ect.) This has been used since the beginning, and is a great way to both keep one person from pummelling everyone all night and keep things interesting.

As for the group, here's where you can join our time trial events, one for each car, set up weekly!

Sounds like So much fun. I'm not into serious competitive online racing I just like to have fun and could care less if I win a race or not. I actually prefer to start every race in last place. One of the things I like to do most in the game is tuning and car setups so once I've tested the car of the week out in stock form and give my opinion on it I might also post a tune for the car just for fun.

Thanks for the group invite and now that I've joined I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started on the car of the week.

Oh I almost forgot I also run with all aids off except ABS 1 so my findings and review on the car of the week will be based on that.

In our lobbies, we allow people to use aids if they like so it makes it fair and easier for any skill level to join and have fun.

Yeah that's fine. If we are running cars with stock setups then some cars will need aids just to get around the track anyways.

I looked in the tunes section and there was no Corolla replica. Surely this would be the correct platform?
Why expend the effort, you ask? The car is not very good handling etc. But to me it's quite different from most of the options in game. Maybe because I'm not very good or used to managing understeer. At least to me it seems this Will keep giving that (-sorry) without hesitation, and to tell you the truth I crashed it before driving one mile.

I've hesitated on giving a report on the WILL since it was truly disappointing. Anyway, here it is. So, for the postive: I played around with this before Tuesday night and thought it wasn't all that bad. I also have one tuned up on my alternate account that was quite good for the 350PP QM we had at Autumn Ring a couple years ago. The only cars that could really give it trouble were the GSX/R ( of course ) the Elise, and towards the end some killer Priuses ( Pri'i?) showed up.

Now for the bad: I quickly discovered that for folks like me using an AT are hopelessly outclassed by the MT drivers. Both @Vic Reign93 and @Nismonath5 pulled car lengths on me off the line, and I was losing 3 to 5 seconds a lap. Add the less than average brakes, and its not fun. The huge body roll did seem to contribute to weight transfer so it was not all that bad through the turns.

And for the really bad: See the fist two vids posted above. Nate blew us all away in a prior COTW sleeper, his favorite Nissan Primera. I was in another COTW surprise ( and favorite of mine ) the Mazda Axela. Both these cars easily bested the WILL, although Vic remained a threat. But seriously, because. Vic.

I'm putting in a early vote for the WILL to be the Beater of the Year. We may have driven worse, but the "worseness" of this one gave me a few WTF? moments. So far @Thematic is the only one to do the TT this week. I'll give it a go unless my dentist calls. That root canal she wants me to have is looking like fun by comparison.

My thoughts:
I use an automatic transmission in the game with a controller and with this COTW it works in my favor as its only available in an automatic from factory so it's keeping it as close to real world as possible. With that being said the gearbox in the Toyota Will VS is just horrible and it's lucky to get out of its own way on any kind of incline. 2nd gear will hold 70mph but it switches to 3rd at 61mph and losses any momentum it had going for it killing your lap times by at least 4 to 5 sec. Just by only Installing a 5 speed transmission will makes a world of difference and instantly takes 10 seconds off your lap time. But we are reviewing this car factory stock so I'm stuck with the crappie transmission for this part of the testing and Time Trials.
With 194 HP and 139 ft.lb of torque and weighing in at 1190kg its got some power and will easily smoke the Comfort Soft Tire's from a take off or around tight corners. The Toyota also has a ton of body roll but it's very predictable and doesn't upset the handling of the vehicle it's actually kind of fun when throwing it around some s-curves. The stock brakes work good and provide average stopping power provided you break early and at no time did I over cook the the front tires by laying hard on the brakes so If you over shoot your brake point its just not going to slow down enough.
My best time in practice was 2:57.954 but in the actual Time Trial I was only able to posted a 2:58.654. It was just to difficult to get the transmission in the right gear at the right speed especially at the end of the first long straight into he uphill corner at Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit.

After 318.6 Miles of testing my verdict is BEATER!!!
I'm sorry but there is just no overcoming the stock gearbox in this ride and it absolutely kills anything positive this car might have had going for it. Even if you do install the 5 speed automatic transmission it still struggles on uphill sections and the only way to overcome it is by installing a fully custom transmission and setting up your own gear ratios or using a manual transmission might help as well.

For fun I installed everyday upgrades that people would likely do to this car if they really owned it.
Sport Exhaust System, Cold Air Intake, Wheels (+2") & Tires (sport hard) and everything eles remained factory stock. It definitely gives the car some noticeable performance gains as it would in the real world and takes a few seconds off lap times but in the end it still suffers from its stock limitations.

I can find no race history on this car so a real race setup or tune for this car is just not available and probably for good reasons, its just not worth putting money into for racing, real world or the game.

Wow that's an impressive database of stats you've got going. Nice work.

This car is willing but not able...
Oh well, points for effort!

The Will VS was part of a marketing approach by a small group of companies, who all decided to make a range of products aimed at the younger generation, under the title "WiLL". The products made in this collaboration included air fresheners, microwaves, and of course, this car.

The Will VS is basically a Toyota Corolla with a few styling cues way ahead of its time, pinched off a stealth fighter. It's also quite the economic city runabout, with auto transmissions, great fuel mileage and durability. This is enough to win it quite the fan base, I can tell you that. One of my work mates owns one, and when he totalled it coming home from work one night, he actually opted to pay more than what it's worth to have it totally repaired and revived from the scrap heap back to the road. So it's definately got it's fans.

But is it any good on the racetrack, now that's the question!

The answer though, is no! :boggled:

There are a few reasons to this. The main one is that the AT transmission changes gears before the engine's reached it's peak power, meaning that anyone who races with AT are instantly at a disadvantage. Your options are either switch to MT, or grit your teeth and use your skill. (Now that I think of it, using AT would have been the perfect challenge for the likes of @Vic Reign93.... oh well.) Another reason is it's pretty bulky, and there's quite a bit of body roll, which predictable, but a bit irritating nonetheless when you're trying to go doorhandle to doorhandle with someone else. It's not the worst offender in the game, and would serve as an okay starter car to those who perhaps don't know any better, but I'd only use it to rack up some quick cash then flick it off in favour of a SR-Z Supra or Clio V6. Fully tuned it boasts 340bhp, 996kgs and 485pp, which are damn good numbers on paper, but the handling is still a bit off which keeps it from being the sleeper it could be.

On Tuesday, I drove it in a few races, but wasn't doing particularly well, so I swapped it out for my trusty 20V Primera. It's only $3k more expensive, but with an oil change and the power limiter set to 99.9% (literally!), it was the exact same PP level, though had more power, two more gears that were closer together, firmer handling, and proved superior in nearly every way! I also tried pitting it against the Opel Speedster, and was only beaten by @Draggon in a previous COTW pick, the Mazda Axela 23s!

Autumn Ring_2.jpg

Kudos to Ash for going from here...

Autumn Ring_3.jpg

...to here!

I'm just going to leave it there, because I feel like if I carry on I'll only be repeating myself. In summary: It's not the absolute bottom of the barrel, but it's pretty far down there. Just go with the Primera ;)

Back soon with the next car!

Right I'm back!!!

As it turns out, COTW's 200th week as a club was actually this week just been. Oops. I'd forgotten that I'd forgotten to add the Nissan R390 GT1 to the list, so, yeah. Regardless, celebrations will still happen! I've got a bunch of special events planned that will go up on the club page, along with some other festivities, to be arranged... watch this space for more details!

In the meantime, it's time for a car!
Congratulations @Rinsky!!!!!

Thank you for letting me participate

Thank you for thanking me for letting you participate!

I'm honored that you would consider letting me pick the next car

And I'm honoured that you're honoured that I've bestowed upon you the honour of the choice!

It's the.... *moment of realisation* wait, what?

Whilst scrolling through our convo to extract the above quotes, I realised he'd snuck in a quick edit! Well, I really liked his first choice, so I'll keep that one away for a rainy day. in the meantime, please welcome to the COTW stage....

maxresdefault.jpg

The 1989 Nissan Fairlady Z 300ZX TwinTurbo 2seater (Z32)!!!!

Are Skylines too mainstream for you? Then climb into a Z32 Fairlady!!! With all that twin turbo power going straight to the rear wheels, I have a feeling the Z brings a lot of potential to the table... Time to see how it stacks up!

This week's Playing With TT's will be set at the Autumn Ring circuit, and will go up tomorrow along with the other celebratory events. I plan to have at least 5 events up, so make sure you all join in celebrating COTW's 200 week milestone!

I know I switched cars but I felt because this is the 200th week and you let the new guy pick the car I really wanted something you don't see alot of people using but still was cool and challenging. I know others probably had a car picked out for the 200th week and I really am honored to be chosen for this so I hope everyone will enjoy this COTW.

Alright fam, the 200 week commemoration events and TT in the Fairlady are all live and ready. The events themselves dont start for another two hours but pre-entries are open, so have a browse and see what catches your fancy! Plus the commemoration events are open for TWO WEEKS as opposed to one, to allow for more competition! Bring it on!!!
