Blocky Graphics

Right guys,

I decided to dig out my copy of GT4, and put it on the PS3. I noticed that the graphics were very blocky so then went and dug out the PS2. To my astonishment It is the same which has led me to the conclusion that it must be the television.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

If so, could it be resolved?

I have a Samsung 32" with all the trimmings HD etc.

Please help, it is destroying my love for this game.

Not sure what you mean, so ...no, it's never happened to me. My PS3 can't play GT4 anyways...but on the PS2 slim, it looks fine.

Did you just get this television? If so, is there an old TV you can compare the picture to?

PS2 games output at a relatively low resolution. On a large HDTV you're going to see every pixel.

Which connection do you have between your console and your TV? The usual composite SCART looks quite horrible on a big screen to be honest, I bought PS3 component cables for my PS2 and will certainly never go back to the composite. Something of a HD effect as it increases the resolution capacity.

I've not heard that before, Grey. Is it really as simple as buying a set of PS3 leads and hooking up the PS2 to a HD TV for an improved visual experience?

Yep, you definitely get a clearer picture if you use component cables.

PS2 and PS3 component cables are just the same as each other though, so no difference/advantage there.

Yeah i got the PAL GT4 and an 42" Panasonic PX80... after GT5P GT4 looks sooo bad :( the first time i´ve stopped playing after a few minutes but now i´ve got to accept it because GT5P sucks after playing 4 months non stop

I'm struggling to be able to do that as I have already used the component socket with my home cinema system. I know what you mean by the quality, it should improve as I see this via the DVD on the home cinema. Conecting it via component sharpens the piture tremendously.

Would It be worth setting the tele to 4:9 aspect and doing the same with the system setup on the PS2. Or would this make no difference?

I am thinking the same, thought I would resurect some of the daft challenges that I used to live for like the Nurburgring in less than 5 minutes with the minolta Toyota. I put it on and the picture was that bad it gave me headache, as the car is travelling that fast the whole picture was a nightmare to try and focus on. I actually could not see most corners coming up.

Very true, I just have never seen PS2 component cables for sale here so I went for the PS3 ones.

On the original subject though, is it out of question to connect the PS3 through HDMI and play with it? Most likely the best possible quality, naturally taking into account the slight problems GT4 has on the PS3.

I think you have just got so used to GT5P graphics jumping back to GT4 was a shock. I wanted to drive on the Nurburgring in GT so much I went back to GT4 and it was a bit of a shock at first, which I got used to again after a while and it appeared normal. When I returned to GT5P.... wow the graphics!

And yes I also noticed the same things about not seeing the corners clearly, the high resolution of GT5P makes it all so clear it messes with your eyes when you go back to the fuzzy low res. If you want to play GT4 give yourself a bit of time to adjust.

I have tryied GT4 through my PS3 then compared with the PS2, the PS3 GT4 image is a little better but doesnt fix the problem.

The 'suffering by comparison' problem is something I've encounter before with the GT series. A while ago I wanted to go back and replay GT1 and GT2 to see how I fared now that I've got so much more experience under my belt.

The graphics looked so appalling that I did not persist - "How did I ever drive in this!" was the response .

I have been out and bought PS3 component cables and they don't work.

My PS3 is connected via HDMI, and I have got out the PS2 to play GT4

On your PS2 or 3?

On the PS2, you need to start it up without a game in and change the display settings to display on component.

On the PS3, you need to start ip up whilst holding down the start button when you switch it on until it beeps, then change the display settings.

Daan, you are the man,

I knew there was something I was doing wrong.

I forgot to change the settings on the PS2. It was still set to RGB. :dunce:

Thanks Jamie (The Grim Reaper). 👍

Wait, quick question here, if the slight necro-bump is okay? Does PAL GT4 have 480p? I ordered the game, and haven't got it yet, and I'm playing GT3 on my HD TV through Component and it looks very... fuzzy.

Are you saying that there is no Nurburgring in gt5p?

Thats right, no Nurburgring in GT5 Prologue as it is just a prologue. Almost 100% certain it will be in full GT5, but we'll just have to wait for that.
