At long last he's on his way outta here. This should have happened 6 years ago!

At. Long. Last. Eight. Bloody. Years.

And I thought the US had the upper hand in the extradition treaty and were able to fly out whomever they wanted at the click of a finger...

In other news, FirstGroup's bid for the WCML has been scrapped due to "significant technical flaws". This is going to cost £40 million in reimbursments, and does not automatically guarantee Virgin retaining the franchise, but this looks likely. Let's not forget this comes after a Ministry of Transport reshuffle, and after explicit statements from the Government that all rail bids had been scrutinised with diligence, and that they were satisfied with all their selections.

Frankly, as an amateur train enthusiast, I do not like Virgin Trains despite their reasonable punctuality, but I dislike FirstGroup even more. The lesser of two evils I suppose.

In my so far brief experience of working with government departments I can assure you the whole system of procurement and awarding contracts is a complete mess.

It is changing slowly. I see far less buffet food these days.

I should tell you something, Virgin is only one of two train companies whose services I've used while in Britain. The other was some small Welsh company that did trains from Holyhead.

That would be Arriva Trains Fails. Arriva is actually a big company but trains in Wales are sparse. And rubbish.

Do Brits feel European?

For me.. Not especially, I think it's because we are an island race, we are used to the rest of the world speaking our language, and we've kept our own currency - we've maintained an idea of our own independence, rightly or wrongly. Our tabloid newspapers also like to blame 'Europe' for lots of things so lots of us see Europe as the bad buy - or the place where all the Jeerb stealin' immigrants come from!

Personally though, I like that Europe has become a 'smaller' place, there is much of it I would like to see, and the fact that as a 'European' I can wonder around it pretty freely is a good thing.

Do Brits feel European?

Not particularly.

I'd like to, because sometimes our ignorance to other countries and the oft-misplaced notion of British pride is why the rest of Europe thinks we're a bunch of idiots. There's a lot to like about Europe, if mainly thanks to the individual identities of the countries inside it.

From a financial and political standpoint, I'm beginning to think that being in the European Union is becoming a problem. We dodged the Euro currency bullet, but some EU policies seem incredibly poorly thought out and we'd be better off without them.

But sometimes, I barely feel British if I'm honest. The Olympics felt like it happened in another country, for all the benefit those of us further north than Watford got. I identify more with being a "northerner", such is the difference between north and south.

I like to tick off Scots on vacation by calling them English.

Lol... although as an Englishman I might take offence to that too! ;)

I was on Holiday in wales a couple of years back and one of welsh speaking old men at the bar thought I was South African.

I've noticed that this seems like more of an issue for some people on this island than that of being labelled a European.

Yeah possibly,

I think there is definitely a 'us against them attitude' and that applies to the English with Europe and the other Home nations. , tbh tho I'm pretty sure the Welsh/Scots and N Irish see themselves as that as well instead of British.....

I don't really see myself having much in common with other Europeans, so I'm not really sure how I'd associate with them. I could be wrong, I haven't spent much time on the continent.

Regarding feeling British, yes, very much. I was born in England to Welsh parents, and get on very well with the Scottish and Irish I have met.

Question

Do Brits feel European?

I most definately consider myself British, mainly because of my family being a mix of Irish, Scottish and English, although mostly the latter.

I'm by no means anti-european, I just don't consider myself to be European.

Rather unexpectedly I share this view, excluding the last paragraph. I'm more worried about Cardiff breaking away from London than London getting closer to Brussels though. You don't know stupid until you've watched the Welsh news. I see myself as Welsh although I'd much rather be a member of the United Kingdom than the sovereign state of Wales.

I am a Welshman with a legally defined nationality of British. I have no problem with English, Scottish, Northern Irish nor Irish people.

Having spent 9 months living in Germany and having met a few people from other countries, I personally believe that we do have similarities. European history shows that we have fought alongside and against one another. We're historically more similar than you think, but of course it is dependent on the individual how external they view themselves. I know people who consider themselves Welsh, British and one who is just 'a human of Earth' with no notion of nationality.

With regards to the EU, I agree with economic co-operation but not assimilation. Same goes for cultural, judicial and legal assimilation. We should be thankful that (Western) Europe is at ease with itself; it has been centuries since we weren't mostly at war with one another.

October 3rd: Man sees joke on Sickipedia about missing schoolgirl
October 3rd: Man posts that joke on Facebook
October 6th: Man arrested for "sending grossly offensive public electronic communications"
October 8th: Man gaoled for 12 weeks for this "crime".

Because BRITAIN.

Should teach him to not use Sickipedia. It's such a terrible website.

And by terrible, I mean lacking in quality.

If I was Frankie Boyle I'd be moving to another country about now, just in case. He got enough abuse for making jokes about the Queen's haunted fanny, so god knows what people would do if he said anything about the missing kid.

Soo... missing/dead baby/child jokes are off limits and officially a criminal offence, but jokes about dead celebrities or any other form of "offensive" jokes is okay to make though right? Maybe the police should be spending more time searching for this missing girl insted of arresting those making jokes about it. Anyone know what he actualy said? And was it written on his own facebook "wall" or on some kind of memorial/awareness page?

The judgement itself has been censored so no-one can know what he said.

Again, because BRITAIN.

I see, looks like i'll never know how "offensive" his comment actually was then, I'm just going to guess it was something un-original about her being in his basement. I also just noticed sickipedia.org is down for "maintenence" lol I wonder if that just a coincidence or if they're trying to clean up any related jokes so they wont be involved in it.
