She is (was?) 2 years away from dethroning (hah) Louis the XIV as the longest reigning monarch.

He had quite a head start mind as he became King age 4. Though even for a monarch in the 18th century living to 76 is pretty good going.

Would it surprise you if the only reason she lasted this long was because she was determined to dethrone him at the top spot?

King Charlie III imminent
I had always heard that he wanted to use George as his regnal name after his Grandfather.

Edward VII, Edward VIII and George VI weren't called Edward or George. A monarch can choose a different regnal name.

Rest in Peace, Queen Elizabeth II

Although inevitable, Queen Elizabeth II's passing today is a real watershed moment.
I am seeing quite a bit of discussion that the UK may soon fall apart following Elizabeth's passing. Is that closer to reality or is it still a bit of wishful thinking by separatists?

I personally don't think it makes much difference, though it is another straw on the camel's back as it were.

Brexit, and the Tory politicians and voters that made it happen, however, is like the entire harvest of Ukraine dumped on the camel's back.

Queen Elizabeth II - arguably through her judgement, intelligence and graceful dignity - was hugely respected. She commanded more respect that the entire rest of the Royal Family combined... by a HUGE margin.

I say this, however, from the City of Glasgow - a wonderful but damaged city that is still scarred by sectarianism - where it is currently pouring with heavy rain, and I suspect that the fireworks I can now hear are not some obscure religious festival... though I sincerely hope they are, I doubt it

I’ve become more of a republican as I get older, but I still had great respect for Her Majesty, as a person rather than the institution. Charles III has a big act to follow.

She’s seen a lot in her reign and she’s leaving a UK in quite a bit of turmoil.

All it took was meeting Mary Elizabeth Truss to make her tap out.
Can we please become a republic now...
There's going to be some wrangling for sure, but probably not that.

The statement from Buck House only referred to "the King and the Queen Consort", without specifically saying which one. Naturally - by the tachyonic vector particle first proposed by Douglas Adams - Charles would have immediately inherited the title, but quite what he does with it remains to be seen.

Ken Lodge has already said William and Peggy Kate will become Duke and Duchess of Cornwall & Cambridge though.

RIP Lizzie, she was a pillar capable of bringing this country together.

Now everything is gonna completely fall apart when Charles takes the throne.

Well the bereavement cards will be a couple of days late due to the postal strike today and tomorrow.
Which reminds me, one of those banal but necessary changes that presumably must happen overnight tonight, is the Royal Mail will have to change the machines that produce the stamps. I hope the people responsible for doing this are not on strike or if so return to work tonight/tomorrow due to the circumstances.

And I really hope we dont have a train strike during the state funeral.

More importantly, may the Queen rest in peace and thank you for serving so humbly and steadfastly. God Save the King. Not a massive fan but still I wish him well. From a human perspective, even after these all years of waiting/"training", it must be extremely daunting. No matter how much you prepare for something in life, it's only when it finally happens that you find out whether that preparation was enough.

I don't think Brexit is the biggest problem per se. But you have PMs like Liz Truss who's (am I wrong?) supposed to be the libertarian supply-sider candidate but the first thing she's doing is giving out printed money for heating bills.

What happened to the people that wanted Brexit to make Britain more open and free than was possible under EU mandates and regulations?

RIP QE2. She may have been the last of the good monarchs. I hope the Prince will bring stability again when he becomes King. Good luck with Charles.
