Can I have an abridged report on what's been going on in the UK over the last say... two months?

Seldom do I have access to the internet so I'm quite out of the loop on any developments. Politics, deaths, sport, pretty much everything.

I know we've had some windy weather and flood warnings. And that Lewis Collins died, which saddened me because The Professionals is one of the best TV shows ever.

Not many significant events. Energy bills have gone up by about 10%, the Woolwich murderers are on trial, three women who were kept as slaves for 30 years by a guy in London were found and rescued, and Nigella Lawson apparently took drugs once.

Oh, and Cameron's still an arsehole, but that's not really news, is it?

The monarchy has been abolished and replaced by failed entrants from the last series of X Factor (Rylan Clark is now the Queen). In a bid to prevent elderly people not being able to pay their energy bills in the winter, it is now a illegal to be over 65 or Cliff Richard. And finally, Bungle, Zippy and George from Rainbow were arrested during the ever-expanding Operation Yewtree investigations. Apparently Zippy has refused to talk. Shocking!

None of this may actually be true. Possibly.

Yeh, once...

There has been several notable storms, including a 'once in 60 year' storm surge that hit Hull and caused several thousand pounds worth of improvements.

So.. Uh.. Sam Bailey won the X Factor?

Who saw that coming? :sly:

Jokes aside, that man who bid £14k (I think) on her must be happy!

(Was it clearly not obvious that she would have had won?)

Can't be a lack of common sense. Best blame the manufacturer of that prosthesis for making it too lifelike. What with its hard plastic finish, motionless nature and lack of human attachment.

Actually, scratch that. Blame the teacher's optician instead.

In other news, why are the British press reacting to Ronnie Biggs' death as if he were some beloved celebrity, when his only notable achievements were robbery and evading justice?
Nostalgia. Remember when criminals weren't all paedophiles?

Ah, Ronnie the loveable rogue. Just like Robin Hood except rather than stealing from the rich to feed the poor, he just kept it. Still, at least he wasn't portrayed by Phil Collins in a film - that's enough to turn the public against anyone.

'Cos 'e was a proper robber, wunnee? Cheeky, loveable, Cockney thief who never 'armed no-one who dint deserve it. Not like these Yardies and perverts you get today, our Ronnie.

How do you mistake a prosthetic limb for a paedophile? I'm stumped.

I was reading on that this morning whilst I was waiting for my brain to awaken. I had to re-read the article just in case I'd read it wrong.

I liked the quote from his management that he was, "kind and generous"...

So you guys were talking about the Christmas number 1, well X-Factor winner Sam Bailey is there right now with AC/DC highway to hell is only at number 5...sorry..

Would I be right in assuming that British society and families are more close-knit than in America? From the things I see on TV, especially the picture that Top Gear paints (of all things) I see a stronger sense of community than what I experience here in Suburbia. Especially here around Christmas - maybe it was the way I was raised but all I see is ridiculous traffic on its way to spend too much money on gifts that don't really matter all that much. Even when I go to the British section of the grocery store I imagine shopping for my groceries in a small local shop as opposed to the monotonous big-box stores we have here. Suburban America sucks. There's no personality to it.

EDIT: Even when it comes to GTP posters. I see a much greater aspect of community amongst the British members than I do the American guys and this thread is a great example.
