Cadillac ATS

Wait, what? You slide your finger on the volume rocker-looking thing? That is so completely stupid. How would you know that unless you had to read about it in a manual? And it's a relative control scheme, as opposed to an absolute. And you mean to tell me you can slide up on the Vol Down button and it'll still go up in a volume? That's SO stupid!

See those left and right arrows on the volume? That's what I'm talking about. Slide your finger left and right. And it's nobody's fault but your own for not RTFM.

Edit: I'm not sure what you mean by "rocker things", but if you're referring to the silver bars, you're doing it wrong. The black area is touch capacitive. The bars are just a reference point for your fingers.

So you're supposed to push the black part and not the silver part? That is SO dumb. No wonder the **** wasn't working.

Not dumb, but at least now you know why you were having so much trouble

Seriously, most of the complaints I see about CUE are people that don't take the time to actually use. Other than sluggishness, there isn't a single complaint I've heard of that isn't simply user error/impatience.

I still don't like how the screen was laid out, and the whole thing with the buttons is completely against all intuition. Wish I had more time to play with it though.

I would have thought that too, pretty damn weird but I guess the second you figure it out it's not going to be a problem ever again. Touch panel anything in cars is stupid, period... no tactile feedback.

Especially when the controls have to do with volume. Nothing really can beat a dial.

No, you don't. Slide your finger left or right to control volume. It's really not that hard to figure out.
It's miserably unresponsive, totally unlike an iPhone which is the touch device that all others are modeled after.

Seriously, once you spend a little time with it, the so called "problems" really do disappear. When you consider most of the controls can be done through via the steering wheel and the digital display in the dash, it gets even better. On top of that, you can do a lot with voice controls.

Nah, I wouldn't say it's miserably unresponsive (unless we're talking about a 2013 model - I'm reference my 2014 ATS so I don't know). Upon boot-up there is a noticeable delay (which I completely admit is frustrating), but give it a minute and it's pretty quick for the most part. I still wish they would give the CPU more power though.

Too shiny.

Also, up down left and right doesn't do anything functionally relevant.

I'm sorry, but now it just sounds like you're making excuses. Up and down cycle through the options, left and right work like back and forward buttons. It's incredibly simple.

And something being too shiny is hard to use? I'm absolutely dumbfounded now.

a D-pad cycles through a menu. I want buttons that do things. I push them while driving and they do what I want. I don't want to navigate menus while driving.

I've spent time with the Chevrolet version, MyLink, and its mostly tolerable. There are a lot of different ways to mess with it, but as far as I figure, if my 80+ year old Grandfather can use it and doesn't mind it, then, GM has mostly done their job. Granted the hardware is too slow, and I don't feel like the capacitive screen is all that responsive, but that's because I've been spoiled by brand-new tablets and cell phones the past few years. I'm not sure why GM isn't just shoving the internals of the Nexus 9 in there (sounds like they might be with Android Auto next year?), but I'm under the assumption that there must be something to do with the expected shelf life and durability of those hardware pieces.

My car company would be ironlight ready. Entertainment systems are stupid.

There are buttons that do that, too. Volume up/down. Track & Station up/down. Cruise control. Mute.

I've been trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but I see it's pointless. I feel you'd be more comfortable with a Mercedes dash that has more buttons than anyone would know what to do with.

I'm just having fun with you. I'm glad we had this conversation. At least I won't be pressing the silver parts anymore.

Hey guys, let's make the parts that do things look like they don't do anything and make parts that don't do anything, look like they do everything.
Genius design. Very intuitive.

Having sat in both a 2014 ATS Coupe and the Cadillac Volt thingy, CUE is by a very, very wide margin the worst infotainment system I've used. The touch sensitive controls are very unintuitive, they don't work consistently, and the reactions are sluggish. The screen itself is poorly designed and the graphics are hard to read even at a standstill because they're so busy. If Cadillac made the best car in the world I probably wouldn't buy it if they fitted CUE, it's so bad that for me it dominates my impression of the car and the company.

I think part of it is the weird blue hue that everything has in MyLink/InteliLink/CUE/WhateverGMCCallsIt. Everything gets mushed together with that weird blue background, and then it becomes a game of remembering where things are. I also think it kind of depends on what layout you've got on the dash, too. I don't mind the placement on a car like the Sonic or Cruze, but in the Tahoe, it seems out of the way to use portions of the system.

I'm definitely of the mindset that Android Auto will change a lot of that. Their new Material Design that debuted with Lolipop will look great in-car, and will be much easier to use than the current systems. Here's hoping its more than just a Chromecast-like casting service to your MyLink system next year.

lol I never payed attention. Why no one makes 7 speed and higher manual transmissions?
Well the C7 has a 7 speed. It makes for better fuel economy numbers but if you need an 8 speed you might as well have an automatic because at that point you'll be wasting time shifting. Just my guess why 8 speed MT don't really exist outside big trucks.
