I like looser sketches myself (because I can't do tight drawings), but it's also less enjoyable when I get all careful with my lines... my drawing instructors hate it when I work like this though.

Hey, what works for the individual. I myself can't do loose lines. I get lost. My design is almost done-ish. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get it put up.

I prefer both, but loose lines I can learn a bit better than strong lines. For me it's what suits you more.

finally fineshed it. My first 100% graphic work. PS5.5, paint tool ASI and Scatch book pro 2010. Mouse , around 6 hours. looks ****

I just noticed this thread, love all the designs here! I'll just quote my entire post from this thread :dopey:

These are great! 👍

I also love to do my own designs on MS Paint, so I can understand how hard it is to draw something properly :sly:

I've been working on one myself, and has gone through quite some changes:

This is the original one

And this is how it has ended up :dopey:

Waiting for your opinions on my design :nervous:

AT1Ness Dude i Really think That uou send your designs to auto manufacturers Ya know just Like Italdesign in a way & Your concepts are stunning

@tonypanda.
I think it looks better now you've added some colour to it, it's coming along very nicely.

@zedextreme.
Nice designs, though i think i prefer the side intake on the 1st one as opposed to the side-pods on the 2nd 1... i think they could be a tad bit smaller or the placement of the wing mirrors should maybe be adjusted if you're going for realism, as a concept though i think it's quite good, i really like the sweeping tail end.

@Celicaas.
Thanks man!, i'm a big fan of Italdesign, Bertone etc, as for sending designs to these companies... i'm not too confident they would ever take much notice to be honest, i remember attending an exhibition about 12 years ago at the RCA (Royal College of Art) in London, and i was basically blown away by the skill level and idea's the students were exhibiting... they're totally on a much higher level than i could ever hope to achieve, so i'm kind of put off, of ever becoming a real car designer...

Personally, (i think i may have said this before, either that or i'm just rephrasing what others have said before).. if any of you in this thread have serious hope of becoming car designers or working in that field, i think the industry nowadays is more geared towards digital technology... so really the ability to draw well is not as important as you might think, i'm no expert but i think what is more important is.. having really good creative idea's, a fair understanding of elements of engineering and the ability to use digital tools (3D packages etc)... though i imagine it does help to have a basic level of artistic talent aswell.

Speaking of digital technology... iv'e finally bit the bullet and got my hands on a graphics tablet, iv'e basically spent about 1 and a half hrs on it so far.. (so basically just messing about at the moment), Damn! it's gonna take some getting used to, for me it really is like learning how to draw again, here's the 2 horrible doodle sketch things iv'e produced so far.

1st 1 took me an amazing 20mins to do and quite frankly.. looks like poop, though i suppose it's probably because it's the 1st time iv'e ever used photoshop or a graphics tablet:

1st tablet doodle by dazzz99, on Flickr

2nd 1, i spent a whole hour on.... and still looks like poop, i haven't really scratched the surface yet, just basic messing around really... hopefully things will improve given some time:

as you can see not that good really... have yet to use (and learn) the tools at my disposal.. layers/editing etc, and please don't pay too much attention to the designs themselves either.. (no real thought put into them), i even kind of stole an idea from AOS , with the extended windscreen (hope you don't mind AOS but i really liked that idea)... i'm definitely going to check them photoshop hints and tips/ tutorials you mentioned a few pages back, hopefully they'll be quite useful to me, Thanks.

PS sorry everyone for the text heavy post.. i hope it wasn't too boring to read.

Mine never had an "extended windshield" to begin with.

And I want to be the demotivator here; Automotive Design is a terrible field to work in as it's all just body styling. You almost never design the entire car's appearance yourself. Usually, it's a team that styles the front half of the car, a team to style the rear, and another to style the interior.

A peer's friend who works in Automotive design does nothing but draw taillights all day. You must realize you can only come up with so many rear lights after a certain point.

If you like to style products, just go a step back into the broader field and study Industrial Design. Granted, to be a good designer, it's not even about stylizing a product, so be prepared, because I didn't know about this until I got into 2nd year.

lol good thing I never had any intentions of becoming an actual automotive designer. About the closest I'd like to get it designing my own kit car, since that way I can design it how I want it :P

Sounds as most as a hobby for you. If all you want to do is style car bodies though, you may as well spruce up your drawing skills and go work for video game companies or Hot Wheels.

AOS, that is mainly true, from concept to production reality, a designer is highly unlikely to see their work carried through without other designers contributing to the end design. and i agree that it would be naive to think otherwise, afterall car companies don't just employ 1 designer for 1 car... it is indeed all about teamwork, there must be many frustrations a car designer (or team) faces... could be they've come up with the ultimate exotic low swung sweeping glasshouse that looks amazing and is the focal point of the design.... only for the team of ergonomists to come in and shoot it down because it wont meet with certain Demograhics.

Thing is, i'm pretty much sure i won't ever become a car designer/stylist, about the closest iv'e ever come to producing anything for the automotive industry is, screen printing some drivers display binnacles for the new McLaren MP4-12C... although it's not a great contribution to the automotive world.. i do get the feeling of some satisfaction even though it's pretty insignificant, and i wonder if car designers get that similar feeling..

AOS.. is the Industrial Design field more about inventing/engineering rather than styling?.. and if you don't mind me asking how long have you been studying Industrial Design and is it on a whole what you thought it would be?, or if you could have done it again would you have chose something different, like automotive design or even product design?

Indeed you are right, it is just a hobby for me. Pretty much the same way with my aircraft designs. And while I have ported 3d models into games, I never actually designed for one. Bit too late for me though, since I ended up going into aviation instead of the gaming industry :P

Industrial Design isn't exactly what you think it is. Take this with a grain of salt; stylizing is arguably the utmost bottom-level of design as there is nothing "new" out of it other than a different appearance. That's one extreme of design (in general, not just ID). The other extreme is the engineering/technical aspect.

A prof says that what differentiates an industrial designer from an engineer is that an engineer is works in a specific field with a high-level of knowledge (i.e. Aerospace Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Automotive Engineer, etc.), and an industrial designer works in multiple fields with a small level of knowledge within each. The reason for this is because ID by nature goes wide in the industry... You could take your ID degree and take on all sorts of professions; product design being the most common. ID can also go into non-tangible subjects like designing systems or games.

I'm half way through my 3rd year of study, realizing that I'm not entirely fit for this. What ID is is essentially solving problems, but what my issue is I don't experience these problems to even know what it's like to deal with said problem (because I'm a cave-dweller). I went into Industrial Design thinking about being an automotive designer and then all these people tell me what I've told you guys about said field. I can still be an Automotive designer after I graduate, I probably won't find a job here at all. If anything, I'd switch to Illustration just because what I actually love doing is simply drawing... it just happened to be cars a couple years ago. Now I'm pretty obsessed with Manga drawings.

Thanks for shedding some light on the subject AOS, by the sounds of it (although you feel you're not wholly suited to it).. ID is a pretty good subject to study as it covers a lot of bases, it's a shame you're not into drawing cars as much as you used to be, but drawing Manga is pretty cool too, iv'e seen a couple of your Manga drawings and i think they're pretty damn good!... i must admit i'm a bit partial to drawing Manga myself, though i haven't done any in a while, i may have to post some pics in the appropriate thread when i get around to doing some new stuff maybe.

It's unfinished, but I'm just wondering if I got the proportions right. For me personally everything looks perfect, but I feel like the front wheels is off slightly (I can never free-hand draw wheels correctly..). And no, I'm not giving not what specific car name it is :sly: But what I can tell you that it's obviously a modern F1.

Sorry for double post, but now I completed the F1 drawing.

I added some things, I modified some things. But it's still an F1. Tell me what you guys think of it :)

All I ask is what is that giant wall-like structure behind the car?

Aaaaaah ha... A Devil horned, nicely drawn F10-like F1 going through a wall and receiving no damage while shooting up water from the ground? :odd:

Yeah, I was trying something. I thought this was the time. Though the size of the sig is 1.5 and you can't make it that small.

I love that F1 drawing! A really fascinating style 👍

Due to popular opinion, I've incorporated the original side intake of my older design into my newer one, while eliminating the LMP style side pods. This brings about a pro and a con. The pro is that the windows can be slid down into the new doors. The con is that some luggage space has been lost from the original design. Anyways here's the comparison

Like the Renault, Panda 👍 The shadows play a well representation.

You guys should look at this thread. It has some amazing work!
