I know it it sounds crazy, my dad had to drive it about 30 miles to fort wayne for 3 to 4 weeks(where he works) when we had his 2001 lincoln ls on jacks because his left rear brake locked up, but going 60 in top gear(4th) is just above idle in the truck haha we were going around town foot off the gas in 4th gear going a steady 40 lol no gas at all pure idle.
I suppose that if you're running at idling speeds, you could realistically get good gas mileage, but still have that low-end grunt for mild acceleration.
Our 68 corvette, gets about 30 mpg on the high way but just like the truck my dad has the transmission tuned for max speed at minimum rpm as in at idle what is its top speed? Say 37 in 5th gear on out vette, so his goal is to get it to 47 (or so) so you keep the rpm as low as possible going 65(thats the speed of the highway)
I didn't quite understand all of that, but I think I get the gist of what you're saying. Also, is your Corvette an automatic? The Corvette I drove was an automatic, and it was more than willing to stay in top gear at 40 mph, barely running above 800 RPMs.
