nearly finalised my folding cockpit, painted black, added carpet to the base (so the pedals can be held in position with velcro) increased the adjustment range for height and tidied up a few loose ends.

That seems like anice setup. I wouldn't mind having it.

Thanks for the info, and guh. You're right...it's a bit pricey. I just can't stand that stupid placement...

It's like...right there...

The Frex one would be so cool, too...just like Ferarri Challenge at the arcade. 👍

Grrr...I'd have no idea where to start by using an alternative...I don't mind if it just clicks up and down, really...I just NEED to move it...

I feel you.

That Frex one was definately a consideration, because when I saw it I was reminded of how good the shifter on Outrun 2 felt.

It's almost identical.

Just deal with it for the time being.

When I get this shift knob, I'll figure out some plans for employing it and I'll keep you in mind.

Your name isn't hard to remember and I see it all the time ^_^

Plus I know what (we) want and getting it done is high on my list of priorities.

I'll also send you a link to that shifter when/if they update the price on it (everything is on sale because they're closing, and the one I'm looking at says it's supposed to be like three dollars), assuming you're interested in that one in particular.

There is a shorter one, but it's not on sale :indiff: so..

Yeah, how's that?

Heres my cockpit. Only spent about 50 dollars "USD" to make it from steel. Its still unfinished but very comfortable to sit in. Though i'll spend more on it to finish it off when I hang a body on it. When its finished it'll look like the front half of a MP4/8 :)
Still the frame can be built for 50 or under depending on the materials used and your knowlege of fabrication.

That is hands down the coolest rig I've seen. The seating position rules :)

I'm back home, whoever needed the ABS setup.. PM me.. please specify what kind of seat your using. I have plans built around an AK rocker seat.. and plans for a seat that's about half a foot higher.

there was a link to a racing sim forum posted in this thread a while ago, anyone have it handy?

I think it might have been this one here.......

quite a lot of home-made setups there...so you should be able to get plenty of ideas on how to build one yourself... :)

Hey ZeroDrifter how did u get a inside view with the cockpit? Also what are some good wheel alterentives don't feel like shelling out 150$ for the GT4 wheel Would like pedals/wheel padel shift or shifter don' car. Thanks I have some extra wood and 2 seats from a MGB so just need a wheel and pedal. I have teh new Nascar/Logitech Pc wheel with padel shifter and all but i'd say the ps2 wouln' take it.

I'm newly registered here, I've been lurking for a bit...

here's my new setup I just built.
It's fully adjustable for length and height. I used an office chair, because it was free... I'll prolly make another one with one of those plastic seats from Summit Racing.

Duke,

That is the EXACT same setup as mine, all the way down to the Poang chair from Ikea.

I actually added a piece of wood to the surface of the Home Depot stand so that I could extend the wheel closer to me while having my back all the way against the chair (rather than having to sit up).

I did a double-take when I saw your pic.

I have the steering wheel stand found on eBay...I've seen it mentioned a couple times in this thread. I like it quite a bit...it adjusts to fit my 6'3" frame easily, it's relatively light weight yet sturdy, and it will work with many different seat configurations.

I started out using it on my recliner which worked well, but I recently picked up an AK Rocker and now I love it even more! Now that I'm sitting down low to the ground it really feels like I'm racing a car...not a big 18-wheeler. The AK Rocker is great, very comfortable for the most part although I did need to add a little lumbar pillow behind the cover. It's pretty thin padding and after a half hour or so of racing I would start to feel it. Now I could probably race all day...

hi, I ve been a member for a while now, never posted anything, just like to read the messages. I love this site cause most of the members share one of my biggest passions. Gran Turismo . Like many of you I don t have the money to buy a nice setup so I ve been hard at work the last couple of months awaiting the release of GT4, and I can say I finally finished my DIY cockpit with DIY racing seat. The whole setup cost me about 60 eur of materials, plus labour. It is inspired by the racebase and is completely ajustable. Not too hard to build just need some pacience and alot of love and care to get a good finish. I will be glad to help anyone willing to make one or similar. Needless to say I am pretty proud of the job. Just waiting for the DFP that should arrive tomorrow and of course my copy of GT4. :dopey:

Racing for America Simulator

I built this one out of PVC for $40.00. Easy to build, folds flat for under beds or couches. Also serves as a desk, couch or game chair.

Some PVC, chair of your choice, and controls.

Adjustable I can use it at 6'4", and have my wife driving it in seconds and she is 5'5"

Check it out.

Hi everyone, I've now finished my cockpit, added a bit of chrome piping for stability & looks. Ditched the decals & wnet for all blue.

For you GTP friends I have created a guide for the construction, download in this PAGE.

OK, here's the 95% finished product. Now that I've found the right wheel angle I need to drill a hole in the flange of the top and put a bolt through to lock it down. I need to replace the 2x4 on the bottom of the pedal mount with a 2x6 for steeper angle on the pedals. Then I need to paint the pedal stand and I'm done.

Total spent:
$29 work stand (Home Depot)
$6 misc hardware/paint (Sears Hardware)
$4 scrap wood I had lying around

I went to the local Home Depot today looking for that stand and could not find it anywhere. What department did you find it in?

Thanks

Jim

It was in the Tools depertment. It's called a Ridgid Flip-top. One of the Home Depots in my area carries them; the other doesn't. Call and ask for it by name, and if they don't carry it, try another store.

There's a similar product that seems to be made by more of a specialty shop; I can try to find that for you. Also, Northern Tool & Hydraulic has a similar thing ($19) with a roller that could be removed if you could make a mounting plate for the wheel.
