Hey guys, check this out. Nothing fancy and I am not sure how well it would work, but looks nice, possible sturdy and is cheap.

TABLEMATE

I saw this on Speed while watching the F1 qualifying!!!

I might just order it!

I'm not sure about that thing to tell you the truth! Looking at that picture i just don't think that table is strong or stable.

Yeah, it kinda looks like it wouldn't be sturdy enough.

Heres my cockpit, as planned out by firetooth.net. :)

Couple of things to add:

If you have a DFP you need to make the peice (200mm x 280mm) that it sits on wider (200mm x 400mm) is what I used.

It is quite low when built, so if you want to use a car seat or something a bit higher, then you should probably make the legs longer or add extensions. With the seat that I use, you could probably have it a bit higher by putting some packing under it but any more than 15cm would probably make it a bit cramped under the wheel.

I find this really comfortable and it feels like you are in a nice position. The piece that the wheel sits on is tipped downwards towards the seat and the pedals are on about a 45, - 50' angle as it is far too uncomfortable flat on the floor. The pedals are stuck to the left over bit of wood (200mm x 280mm) with adhesive velcro so you can pull them off or move them up or down a bit and they stay put very well.

The seat padding is from Ikea & you can actually buy it on its own, I will be making some sort of prop for the seat so that it can be used in the middle of the floor

Overall this is well sturdy and doesn't go anywhere if on carpet. 👍

Here are a couple pics of my rig and setup.

My father-in-law pretty much designed and built the rig himself using Unistrut tubing. The idea was to minimize welding and cutting. Everything bolts on and is adjustable. The seat is out of an old RX7. The wheels came from a garden wagon and are necessary cause this thing weighs as much as a car. (Well..not quite but it is pretty heavy) It is great to be able to wheel it in and out of the back room when necessary (keeps the wife happy).

The setup is an 64" Pioneer HDTV and and Onkyo 6.1 surround system. Works out pretty well

Here is my Not cheap Cockpit Alternative. I just don't know where to post it so I think this is not that expensive and it's really the best overall seat to enjoy the racing game like in haven. I did a little tweak to make it a little more stable...now I got a rock solid setup!

Hmm, $25 total. $20 for new shelving and L-brackets, junk shelving for the base, $5 for paint, and my old Miata seat (got a race seat for my car, does that count?). :)

The setup is really sturdy except for hairpins. In hairpins, the whole thing tilts forward and back a bit too much. 10" wide shelves are not stable enough for those. (I could attach the base to the upright section, but then it would be harder to get in and out).

I wish I had metal-working skills. :irked:

They're Martin Logan Hybrid Electrostatic/Cone speakers. I've had 'em for ages. Just got the Plasma. I likey. :D

I'd like to improve my set up. Based on others I've seen here, I like the 'angled' wheel designs, but I need to be able to store it away easily, and I don't have a lot of room. Right now I can put the wheel off to the side, and the base doubles as a step exerciser. :)

Also, the bigger designs might make it hard for me to get as close to the TV as I like (full immersion in the game). As it is, I'd like to be a little closer.

You might like mine design, the whole this can be store in a 2' x 2' x 2' box. Check it out!!!

I have spotted an item i am thinking of getting .... they call it the "Logic 3 podium".

Basically designed to suit logic 3 wheels but works with most.

Cant find too many details about how high it extended (looks quite low in the few pics i have seen)

Anyone else used/seen/heard of this thing?
Thanks

Has anyone else ever spent this much time or money on a game before. I love it even when I'm not playing I'm still working of GT4 somehow. I've spent more time making my little bootleg stand and planning a better one than I have playing the game. Oh I know its cheesey looking I have the 5.1 dolby around me and another speaker system that came with last steering wheel mounted to the stand. Come on even after I do all the weight reduction to my car I would still have to add back 200lb. for my speaker box.

YES! Richard Burns Rally drivers spend enormous time on cockpits and moding the game (PC).

come on over to BlackHole Motorsports if you haven't already! :)

GTR, Nascar<any version>, LFS, GPL, and other (all PC) games... people almost devote there life too :)

but yeah, i'd say this is the first PS2 game that people are really going crazy over (as far as a driving game).

wonder if GT4 will come out on PC? anyone know? i had a PS2 but i gave it to my brother. :dopey:

Thanks for the info, and guh. You're right...it's a bit pricey. I just can't stand that stupid placement...

It's like...right there...

The Frex one would be so cool, too...just like Ferarri Challenge at the arcade. 👍

Grrr...I'd have no idea where to start by using an alternative...I don't mind if it just clicks up and down, really...I just NEED to move it...

Any ideas? I've Googled DFP shifter alternatives and the like a million times...can't find anything... :ouch:

Or maybe I need a better phrase to search for? :dunce:

the actual rewiring of the shifter is a cake walk. the hardest thing to acomplish is to actualy GET TO the wires in order to devert them down to a shifter.

to get to them you have to disassemple the wheel casing. i've never done this before but i'm looking into it once i have a cockpit setup. once you get to the wires and switches of the shifter you can either wire it to a 'socket' like a headphone jack or a 1/8 inche mini (or smaller) or direct wire it to the shifter through a conduit.

i'd suggest the "jacked" situation over the hardwired. if it's jacked then you can disconnect it when moving the wheel or whatever. hardwiring it would make it permanatly tethered to the wheel. also any stress put on the wires would be pulling directly on the mother board of the wheel. if it was jacked it would only yank out the plug that's in the socket. therefore not ruining your wheel.

oh yeah... and doing this i'm sure will void the warranty!!

I saw this thread and thought I'd have a go!

I started off having a look around in our garage for inspiration and saw this trolley:

May not look like a cockpit, but with a little creative re-assembly...

Although the floor's not too comfortable, ground level gives the right eyeline with the TV:

I plan to get a seat from a scrapyard and I'll also have to 'tweak' it a little; it tilts forward when you press the pedals (although you hold it still by the wheel) and it rocks a bit on the hard surface (though that should be fine when the carpet is put back - room's being decorated)

I think the trolley cost about £20 plus two bits of string and some screws to hold the pedals in place... quite good value I think!

yeah I saw that site about 1 1/2 years ago and I attempted to make it for GT3 with some knowledge on electronics as far as soldering and knowing some components but apparently not enough to understand the timing portion for the servo. I've got half of it done but I'm still determined to make a nonsequential H-shifter for GT3 and even more, now that GT4 is out!!!

MotZodd, just wondering if you had luck making this h-shifter project (if you attempted to?) or if anyone else thats reading this post? or even if you fully understand the layout/electronics and aren't planning on making this project... so if anyone could help me out through email, step by step, it would be great! (then I'd be able to post my GTsimcockpit fully complete! 👍 )

Took my seat from my M3 and took a laptop desk from Office Max ($70). Then built it to be rock solid with supports and braces.

pix on the way

yes. my grandfather got one for xmas. it was meant to be light so old people could lug it around. it's very sturdy, but so light you'd be better off just holding it between your knees. even the 20 walmart tv tray would be a better investment (for wheel purposes).

If you're going to open the DFP case, which is quite easy since there are only like 8 small screws to take out from the underside, and possibly replace the seq. shifter with a new one...then if you're not too keen on tackling the wiring job as outlined here...then as an easier alternative, since you will be voiding the DFP warrantly, you may want to check out the Seq. shifter from Frex, as seen here as this is a direct plug-n-play device...

Though one would have to consider the costs involved of not only purchasing it but any shipping/handling charges as well, it is still a worthy alternative for those of us who are electronically inadequate... :)

Well, just my $.02 worth of input! :D

There is a stand being sold on ebay that has been getting great feedback from users. Search ebay for "steering wheel stand". It is sturdy, stable, easy to store, great driving position, inexpensive compared to cockpit style simms. There have been posts on this site about this stand before. Users are saying this is the best stand for the money. Please check it out.
