Interesting design... looks like it would break fast but I can understand why it's not compatible with the above consoles.

Well, here's my cheap cockpit....

I used to have this setup for two wheels that didn't cost me anything:

But then I bought a pair of car seats from a '91 Passat for $50 CAD and I have this setup for now:

The old school desk was free and is awesome because it is really heavy and stable. Much better than the TV tables. The desk also has space for me to keep all the prize/car data I print out from this site :D.

I was going to build a little platform to hold the pedals as my spring break project but have since put a few wooden blocks under the seat and used a taller school desk so now it's quite comfortable. Besides, I'm fairly lazy and will always take the path of least resistance ;) so I'll probably keep it like that.

Eventually, I'll set up the second car seat beside it so I can get back to two player battles.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with software support and/or limitations of today's current consoles...They have their own forum over at RSCNET.ORG if you're interested in knowing more about it!

Anyone know where I can buy(in the U.S.) the aluminium bars that frexGP uses in its cockpit? Or what is it called?

You also might want to check out and see if there is any surplus yards around, I live in washington so boeing surplus is down the road and has all kinds of cheap aluminum and metal.

what steering wheel is that red one? logic 3 top drive gt4? if it is is it any good for gt4?

I use a lawn chair - the kind that you can lay down on. I built a simple pedal box out of 1/4" ply that holds the pedal base at 45 degrees and then is either bolted or cable-tied to the foot of the chair (you need to sit in the chair and attach it so it matches you leg lentgh - or put slots in the pedal box base so it slides to adjust).

Now all you need is a table of any kind that holds the TV and allows the wheel to be clamped to it. If you do things right (chair height, table height) your legs slide down under the TV table and it feels like seating in a race car tub!

Sounds weird, looks even stranger, but it WORKS, its like reclining down in an F1 car - I kid you not..

Will try to photograph - but not sure how to attach pictures.

Bye the bye - my table is about twelve foot long, long enough to put SIX driving stations side-by-side, guess what we use that for !!!!

If your in NJ, let's RACE

Well, I've got mine built. Total cost was somewhere around 15-20 bucks on the material that ended up in my stand. I bought about twice as much hardware and much more wood than I needed. I spent about 32 bucks total, but if you know how much you'll need, you can do it for cheaper.

It was based on the design posted by feldon23

That's my buddy playing GT4. I'll get some more upclose shots later. I plan on painting it black, adding a small bar on the top of the board the wheel mounts to so that stuff can sit up there and not slide off. I'd also like to add a cup holder, but not quite sure how to do it. This design is adjustable for different chair heights and sizes. My friend is a good wood worker, and he said he'd make me an adjustable pedal set so that the pedals would be angled up and you could put them at any distance you wanted.

This design folds up to 2ft x 3ft x 6in when not in use. Quite convient for storage.

hey that looks realy good !! cant you post some "not in use" pictures ??

Yeah, but right now I don't acutally have it. I let another friend of mine borrow it for the weekend since I currently don't have my steering wheel. (see the DFP thread for why). But, I'll definitly get some up close shots, and some shots of it folded up. The only thing I still need to do is add a couple of triangle braces to get rid of the really small amount of side looseness. Its really sturdy as it is, but I want it to be rock solid.

Here's a rough guide to my setup, all pix are taken in my office at work, and at funny angles...
First you get a frame welded together.....

Then you add the seat, making sure you have enuff reinforcement for the pedals and wheel.

And finally, you make sure everything fits together.
hey presto!

Very Nice design! 👍
How much did that cost you in materials to make. That setup seems very feasible for my budget. Any info on materials/costs/labor would be great.

Metal was from the scrap bin, total cost, 0.00p
Seat was from a scrapped mark 5 escort, total cost £15.
Welding was done by my mate, i paid him one bottle of Whisky, total cost £15.
Wheel was ordered through my local computer retail shop, total cost £100.
I know the dfp was expensive, but i didnt care!

I just wanted it.

And more fun than a bath in baked beans.

Here's some more angles, and my mate Ross using it.

Around $25 for lumber/hardware
Seat from a late 80's Ford Escort, free. (Inlaw owns a junkyard) 👍

Going to throw some black paint on it and work on pedal placement soon.

I would say....

OMG how long are your arms?

You play basketball?

Nice build man, cheap is always the way in this sort of thing, you get what you need and it always impresses when youve made it yourself...

The seats on its original rails so it slides front to back, about 18-20 inches. 👍

I agree, anyone can buy a playseat and turn a few screws, but it's a whole new balgame when you fabricate something from nothing. Quite rewarding indeed. :sly:

I agree i spent alot of money on my setup and could have bought a descent one for the price but i like mine better cause i built it. 👍

Hey guys, guess what i finally have my DFP and cockpit built, dad is driving it as i type this.

Pics can be found Here! Can take more pics if anyone is interested. Due to our limited amount of tools (renting a house while we build our new one, hence the wood :) ) Its not finished off with smooth edges and such, but its very nice and rigid and gets the job done very well. We had no plans to go off just had a good picture in our heads of what is needed.

With a bit of luck i will be up to my DS2 speed within a week or so, and then above it! :).

Costs
DFP/GT4 - $300
Seat - $100
Bolts for seat - $5
Wood - Free (building a house)
Bolts for wood - Free (building a house)
Total - $405 AUD

And if your lucky enough to find a abandon vehicle in the bush where you ride motorbikes or near where you live (unfortanelty we werent) you can have a seat for free :)

Hello All!!!

First of all GREAT JOB on this web site. I don't know how I found it, but I'm glad I did. Okay, here is the situation. I bought the GT4 game, and the LogicTech Pro wheel. My problem is I can't mount it anywhere :yuck: .

Well My friend, Mitch came along and said that he could probably make me a cockpit out of steel, and if I get a racing seat, I'd be set :dopey: :dopey: . I took him to his words, and he is currently making me a cockpit. It will be ready sometime next week :) .

In the process of making me my seat. He asked if I knew anyone with the same situation. I said I didn't know, and why. Well, he said that he can make a cockpit for anyone if they wanted him too. I was just wandering if how many people here would like for him to make one. He told me that the stand will cost him around 100.00 to make (labor and material) and adding the seat and powder coating, will probably cost around 200.00 to 250.00 a piece. I'll post pictures of mine as soon as I get it.

Anyone interested??

Possibly people are, but please don't solicit directly. Put a link or comment in your signature asking people to PM you directly if they are interested. Thanks.

Just got my steering wheel a few days ago and couldn't standing using it in my lap. I noticed I had this crappy little cabinet that wasnt used for much, so I decided to rip it apart a bit. After a few modifications like removing the door and some face plates (you can see off to the left) everything fit just fine.

It's not the best right now because the only chair I have sucks, but for a small college dorm room where space is slim it works fine.

also I like how your PS2 is gasping for air...it reminds me of the fat kid at school who is always sitting on the little kid cause he's jealous that the little kid is smarter.
